Summer 2019
This is the end of our calendar year.
Time to relax over the summer, re-
charge with the family, and enjoy
the outdoors, if that is your cup of
tea.
The end of year brings the Chap-
ter’s annual tour. The tour this year
was “Behind the Scenes” of the
famous Longwood Garden Foun-
tains. Pierre DuPont loved fountains
and started building them in the
1920’s and they grew to 1800 spray nozzles in the
1930’s. The display was grand. In the 1950’s, DuPont
added lights for a spectacular and colorful evening
display. Later, music was added. The Main Fountains
along with the Conservatory are the focal point of
Longwood Gardens. All of the piping for the foun-
tains were buried under ground. Many of the original
pumps are still in their original locations. Over time,
the piping decayed and parts of the fountain were
no longer working. Moreover, because the piping
was interconnected, repairs could not be done.
In 2014, Longwood Gardens embarked on a project
to refurbish the main fountains. This resulted in closing
down the area, painstakingly cataloguing every de-
tail, dismantling to fountains, and restoring. All of the
piping was removed and new structures with tunnels
were built. This allowed for future maintenance of the
fountains.
The Main Fountains were restore to original grandeur
and the number of spray nozzles tripled, 4400 plus.
Where originally there were four light colors, now
there are eight different colored LED lights that can
generate any color in the spectrum. Computers now
control the fountain nozzles and are choreographed
to music.
The Main Fountains are great to see in the daylight
and spectacular at night. If you can, try to attend a
show on a Thursday thru Saturday night when there is
synchronized music.
See you in the Fall!
David Smith

TECHNICAL CORNER Happy Summer Everyone!!!
On Thursday, June 6th, you should have received an email for an ASPE Philadelphia Dinner
Meeting Survey from [email protected] via Survey Monkey. Your Philly ASPE Board sin-
cerely hopes that you’ll take a couple of minutes to provide us with your feedback about our
educational dinner meetings and venues. Please participate and provide us with your thoughts
and suggestions. Thank you!
Upcoming events and topics for your review:
Join ASPE for these upcoming online and in-person educational events and earn CEUs while
doing so. All webinars are at 2pm EDT and these one (1) hour webinars provide you with 0.1
CEU for your participation. The webinars are FREE for ASPE members. Visit www.aspe.org today to
sign-up.
- New Technologies for Legionella and Pathogen Control on June 19th. Basic Plumbing Deign I Two-Day Workshop is being offered in Rosemont (Chicago), IL on
June 27 – 28. During this introductory class students will start the design process by reviewing and
designing storm drainage systems, natural gas systems, domestic cold and hot water systems and sani-
tary sewer systems, along with reviewing how to properly coordinate these utilities with the architects
and structural engineers. Go to www.aspe.org/BasicsWorkshop and sign-up today.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Happy 4th of July! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. Have you read through the 2018
NSPC yet? You may want to review the changes from the 2015 to the 2018 code now, as the adoption
date will likely be announced very soon. Note, there will still be a grace period following adoption.
Check out the code here: http://epubs.iapmo.org/NSPC/2018/
For your convenience, I’ve listed a few notable changes:
1.2 – Revised definition of Drain Stack for additional clarity.
5.1(3) – Three-compartment sinks may be installed on one trap when the requirements of this section
are met.
7.11.5 – The requirements for sanitary floor sinks has been expanded.
7.22.2 – New Section Ultraviolet Lights has been added under the Water Treatment Systems section.
7.24(k) – Floor drains or other receptors (and all downstream drain piping) for emergency fixtures shall be sized based on GPM
discharge of equipment, but the DFU load on the sanitary system shall be zero (0) DFU.
11.3.1 – Minimum slopes for horizontal drain pipe sizes have been revised.
11.4.4 – New section on floor drain requirements has been added.
11.5.7 – New table has been added outlining drain pipe sizing for showers.
12.4.8 – New section prohibiting vent terminal covers has been added.
This is only a small sample of changes. Be sure to read through the code and check New Jersey’s amendments once adopted!

AFFILIATES CORNER Attention Affiliate members!
My project for the summer is to update the Affiliate Connection section
on our website (http://aspephila.org/affiliate.htm). Please take a moment
and visit the site. If there are any corrections that need to be made to
your listing please let me know, or if you need to be added, provide your
information as you would like it to be displayed and e-mail it to kev-
[email protected]. I appreciate your help in keeping our chapter’s
website up to date and a helpful tool for our engineering community.
Another reminder for the affiliate members, the Tabletop Presentations
are filled through Jan. 2020, leaving only 4 spots remaining for the next
year. If you have a new product or manufacturer you would like to promote, a Tabletop Presentation is a great
way to get your product in front of a room full of Plumbing Engineers and Designers. Please contact me if you
are interested in a Tabletop Presentation for next year.
Have a Great Summer!

SPEAKING OUT
Steve Ziga
20 years ago, a gentleman (I use this phrase loosely) approached
me and suggested that I join the American Society of Plumbing En-
gineers because it is a great place to meet and network with peo-
ple like myself. I took that trifold application and filled it out thinking
“at the least I’ll get a book”. I stayed a member at a distance for
the first handful of years then after developing some confidence,
started to regularly attend meetings. After awhile the same gentle-
man who gave me the tri-fold application suggested I attend a
Board meeting. So I go nervously and I meet a great cast of people
who welcomed me and were encouraging of any ideas and feedback I had (I was a what
you call an AYP at the time). I was then asked to join the Board and as nervous as I was to
accept, I was equally excited because I truly realized the value in our Society. Fast forward
15 years to today I am still working with many of the same people to continue to promote
our industry.
I would like to recognize the following people who served the Chapter and were a friend to
me: Paul Silvestre, Bill O’Donnell, Dave Holst, Ernie Rink, Mike Panco, Dawn Bishop, Jerry Of-

WOMEN OF ASPE
Laura Simons
Our first official WOA event was a huge success. I would like
to give a huge thank you to Delta for sponsoring our event! The
women had a great time at Kick Axe. There was some fun com-
pletion too. The party didn’t end after the activity – we all
stayed and socialized for over an hour afterwards. It was fun to
have such a diverse group together. We had senior plumbing en-
gineers, interns, reps and even a few women from the Local UA
690. Our chapter was represented well by our president Dave Smith. Please
continue to spread the word about the WOA Philly Chapter and please pass along
my contact information to anyone that you think may be interested in future
events!
