1840. In June 1819, Harriet Lathrop Winslow embarked to Ceylon (Sri

Lanka) with her husband, Miron

Winslow, under the American

Board of Commissioners for

Foreign Missions (ABFCM).

They were stationed at Uduvil,

where Harriet gave particular

attention to the education of

girls. When a central boarding

school for girls was established

in January 1824, the Winslows

took charge of what became the well-known Uduvil School. Very good in modern green cloth,

spine gilt. Some toning and foxing of pages, but text is bright. 18mo. 480pp. $100.

Haps and Mishaps of a Tour in Europe

Accounts of her 1853 European Travels While on Assignment for The New York Times

1854. Sara Jane Lippincott (pseudonym Grace Greenwood, 1823-1904) was an

American author, poet, correspondent, lecturer, and newspaper

founder. One of the first women to gain access into the

Congressional press galleries, she used her questions to

advocate for social reform and women's rights. Haps and

Mishaps of a Tour of Europe are accounts of her 1853 travels

in Europe, on an assignment for The New York Times, having

the distinction of being the first woman reporter on the Times

payroll. Very good in brown cloth, spine gilt. Lacks front fly,

scattered foxing inside. Octavo. 437pp. $75.

yacht ‘Sunbeam’ Lady Brassey and her husband, Admiralty Secretary

and diplomat Thomas Brassey, sailed around the world, departing

from Chatham, England in 1876. Lady Brassey’s account, first

published in England in

1879 and derived from

her travel diaries, was a

best seller and went

through many editions.

Very nicely illustrated,

with 6 maps, including

the large folding frontis

showing the entire

journey, a folding map of the Straits of Magellan, and a map of the Sandwich Islands and

Paumoto or Low Archipelago. Very good in decorative brown, black and gilt Victorian binding.

With 118 illustrations engraved on wood by G. Pearson after drawings by the Hon. A. Y.

E. W. Foote Cheves’ Sketches in Prose and Verse—1849

Rooms, 1849. Elizabeth Washington Foote Cheves is an American author born in Eastern

Virginia. She was not formally

educated, but taught herself Latin and

French languages, drawing, and

painting by reading books. First

Edition. Very good- in brown cloth,

spine gilt. Some chips on boards,

including ¾ inch chip on top of spine.

Some water damage to margins of

back pages and rear board. Scant

foxing, but otherwise text is clean and

George Palmer Putnam. First edition. Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)

was an American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first

female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. During an

attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937,

Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central

Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life,

career, and disappearance continues to this day. Last Flight is

almost entirely written by Amelia Earhart herself, originally

intended to be titled World Flight. It is a narrative of her journey

around the world to New Guinea, as it came by cable and telephone.

With 27 photographic illustrations. Very good in red cloth, spine

and front board gilt though faded. In a very good dust jacket with a

¼ by ¾ inch chip mid-spine, and some small chips on edges of dust

compilation of Mrs. Jameson’s works in a set of 10

volumes. Anna Brownell Jameson (1794-1860) was friends

with Lady Byron, wife of the Romantic Poet Lord Byron.

Their friendship lasted for seven years; apparently brought

to an end due to Lady Byron's unreasonable temper. Very

good in olive green cloth, spines gilt. 16mos. $150.

Margaret Sanger. Margaret Higgins Sanger

was an American birth control activist, sex

educator, writer, and nurse. Sanger

popularized the term “birth control”,

opened the first birth control clinic in the

United States, and established

organizations that evolved into the Planned

Parenthood Federation of America. The

author, Baron Eugene Fersen, was born in

1873 in St. Petersburg to Marie the Grand

Duchess of Russia. His grandfather was

King Alexander II of Russia. His uncle

was Leo Tolstoy and his half-sister was

Queen Maria of Romania, who was the

grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of

England. A rare and special book. Near Fine in soft, brown textured leather. Front cover stamped

with the emblem of the Science of Being in gilt. All edges gilt with curved corners. Delicate

pages with rare light and thin paper, the first time in the history of paper manufacturing in the

United States that such a paper was made. Beautiful black and gold printing throughout,

decorative illustrations in gold begin each chapter. Interior is clean and text bright. 16mo. $500.

is one of the better-known novels of the 19th-

century English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. It was

first published, irregularly, in eight instalments,

between December 1851 and May 1853, in the

magazine Household Words, which was edited by

Charles Dickens. Very good in ¾ green leather

with green cloth-covered boards. Spine gilt with 5

raised bands, darkened to brown. Top edge gilt.

Some toning of page edges, but text and

illustrations are clean and bright. Previous owner’s

American abolitionist, women's rights

activist, Native American rights

Her journals, both fiction and domestic

manuals, reached wide audiences from

the 1820s through the 1850s. At times,

she shocked her audience as she tried

to take on issues of both male

dominance and white supremacy in

some of her stories. Very good- in

brown cloth, with paper label on spine.
