The great Rishiner Rebbe (1795-1860) זצ”ל explained the words, והיה
.in the following way עקב תשמעוןWe live in times where the spiritual level does not reach the level of
previous generations. This might cause us to be sad, and lead us to feel that our תורה and מצות are not חס ושלום that important.
To this, the פסוק says, “Do not let this enter your mind.” To Hashem, it’s והיה (והיה is שמחה), a great joy because even in our later times (the heel or end - עקב), it is תשמעון.
This means Hashem is happy and listens to our מצות and תורה.

As we went to print last week, the Shabbos Nachamu concert was just about to slam into high gear. Glow sticks, blow up guitars, saxophones, mics, whistles and kazoos were flying through the air! Our psyched staff and campers danced and sang their hearts out, arm in arm to the pumping music and soulful singing of Benny Amar. What a way to go into Shabbos Nachamu! If the achdus displayed was not enough to bring Mashiach this year, I don’t know what will.
Color Day visited on Monday (hmm...I smell a fakeout) and right after/before lunch the entire camp cheered on the Promenade as the 10’s, 20’s and 30’s “Blue Team” battled the Senior Division “Red Team” in a specially designed obstacle course (jumping chairs, riding bikes, balancing on hockey sticks, getting a pebble into a tiny cup of water). Everyone thought it was breakout…… but not quite. No color war in SDC....until Thursday afternoon that is!
I hope you got a copy of the Jewish Home. Color War 2018! Blue vs. Green - Chesed vs. Emes. What’s that Rabbi Taub? There’s a hurricane brewing? When? It’s expected to arrive in SDC on Monday? What about the 40’s Met’s Game Overnight? Oh, so they can go to the game but we may have to move swim and the BBQ indoors?? We will have to closely monitor this weather situation...and no, Betsy Devos is not coming to Camp! That guy in the suit is Rabbi Posnick after all!
The 10’s, 20’s, and 30’s just got back from their Luna Park trip, one of the many trip highlights of our summer here at SDC. Seeing the campers’ smiles on the roller-coaster, water flume, swings, and so many other great rides, says it all. Over 800 bottles of water were consumed with the beautiful weather Hashem sent us. 9 bottles of spray sunscreen were emptied, reapplying throughout the day! What an amazing trip!
The 30’s Latenight was busted out with a crazy game of scrabble- 400 letters scattered all across the fields. Letters were found, put into words and the winning bunk was B31! Dovi Jaffe found the black letter! 50 extra points! Human Stratego was also a huge hit, where every camper had a number and tried to work their way to capture the flag, without being bombed.
In the 40’s, Rabbi Schwadel was able to speak for 40 seconds on the mic by lunch without saying the words “and” “or” or “um”. Try that! Leagues are in full swing - literally. Among the big bats - Nati Taub and Roni Cohen both hit grand salamis, while Chananya Levy struck out 7 batters. Competitive, achdus filled sports is the name of the game here at SDC!
The Senior Division and CITs had their second action-packed Overnight starting in Camelback Mountain Adventures with zip-lining and mountain sliding, followed by a delicious dinner of nuggets, kugel, and heroes, making sure to watch out for those rattle snakes and foxes. Then they were off to Aquatopia, the most amazing water park. The boys had a fantabulous time getting soaked on the slides, surfing, the hot tub, the lazy river and basketball - all aqua style. Then it was off to Camp Bonim. After a great night’s sleep, Shacharis and breakfast, campers got to feed horses, enjoy speed boating, golf cart rides, and make your own deli sandwiches, then it was back to SDC for an all you can eat BBQ and time for some shloof.
BUT not for long because the next day, while the younger divisions were at Luna Park, Leagues went in overdrive. After all, we have to try and get as many games in as possible before the hurricane arrives....
What do you prefer? Meat or Chikin?
