PEAK TRAVEL & ADVENTUREWeek of 7/30/2018

Tsali Recreation Area, located in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, near scenic Nantahala River Gorge and beautiful Lake Fontana, serves as adventure base camp for the week where students camp in tents and ENO hammocks. Each day brings new and exciting immersive adventures as we raft 8 miles of swift water on the Nantahala River, ride lake hugging mountain bike trails that begin just yards from our campsite, fly through the Gorge canopy on a series of tree-top zip lines, paddle the smooth, pristine waters of Lake Fontana in touring kayaks, and hike as Lilliputians through the old-growth hardwoods in the Joyce-Kilmer National Forest. We prepare our own meals in camp with an occasional trip into Bryson City for pizza or a late night ice cream run.

CLAS 220 Mythology Dual CreditGrade 11 - 12 Cost: See description

Zeus, Hera, Hercules. Achilles, Odyssey, Helen. Do you have an interest in ancient Greek mythology? Do you want to learn more about the creation, production, and dissemination of many foundational myths in European culture? During the Summer of 2018, you will be introduced the denizens of ancient Greek myths. From Alpha to Omega, you will learn how people have crafted and shaped myths to reflect their own understanding of the world. You will learn from the primary sources themselves, in the translations of the works from Homer, Hesiod, and Euripides. And you will learn how we continue to design and perpetuate myths today. In this course, there will be no worksheets, quizzes, or tests. Instead, you will be asked to submit a small project for every class as well as a short (500 word) reflection on your process. After we ground ourselves in the Grecian geography with interactive maps built on Google, we will spend the first week focusing on the effects of written representation. You will be asked to compose a poem, write a letter in the manner of the Heroides, and design a game (card, board, etc.) for a particular Grecian myth. For the next class, we will learn how oral traditions and recitations affect the transmission of myths, and you will recite a story aloud and compose a song with music. Then, we will turn to the physical representation of myth, in which you will be asked to sketch a large scene for wall art, design and put together a mosaic, and craft a scene via a diorama. The final third of this course will be conducted online via discussion forums, project submissions, and peer review. We will look at modern representations of myth, including movies and video games, and you will be asked to design a social media profile for a god/goddess or hero/heroine as well as shoot and edit your own short video. In lieu of a traditional final exam, your final project will be a portfolio in which you organize your thoughts and reflections from the semester into a cohesive narrative that outlines how your thinking about myths has changed.'

ACADEMIC COURSESFor Credit Courses

CLAS 220 Mythology Dual Credit (continued)

For more information about the program, contact the Upper School Academic Dean, Lisa Norman ([email protected]) or the Upper School Head, George Scouten ([email protected]).

Film-making: Part I and Part II$425.00

This filmmaking course is a trip through the world of cinema that will take participants through several short jewels of early cinema (which by now are more than 120 years old!) as well as more recent classic movies. In week one, participants will watch movies from directors like the Lumiere brothers, Charles Chaplin, and Steven Spielberg, paying close attention to the basic elements of cinematic language (storytelling, lighting, acting, editing...), discussing them with each other, and making practical filming exercises. With the fresh insights and tools learned during these sessions of active watching, participants will begin planning their short film or documentary and, in week two, put their ideas into practice by working together as a film crew: they will draft a rough script, arrange the logistics of filming, get behind the camera lens to shoot, and finally edit their opera prima, which will premiere in a small, private ceremony on the last day of camp. All those who want to get an overview of the history of cinema, sharpen their senses to better appreciate this art form, and shoot their first short film are welcome on board.

The films will be submitted for evaluation and participants will receive a final grade according to three criteria. (1) Engagement in class: active participation in classroom discussions and in the camp's filming exercises is important insofar as it means that participants have found a way to enjoy and take advantage of the course. (2) Acquaintance with the basic elements of cinematic technique and language: the main purpose of this course is to introduce participants to the world of cinema both through watching and doing; students will be encouraged to apply in their own film some of the tools they learned from attentively watching classic movies and their project will be graded with this in mind. (3) Teamwork: to give one's best for a collective work is its own reward and no film is the product of a single individual; the commitment to work together, orderly and with good disposition, will have a special weight in each participant's final grade.

Students will be awarded EITHER a half credit of Fine Arts, OR a half credit of Technology upon successful completion of this course. Attendance is mandatory for all ten class periods.

The purpose of the camp is to help students and athletes pursue and achieve their goals on their competitive fields as well as in the classroom and personal lives. We will devote the rest of our time to developing skills and strategies for reading, writing, vocabulary study, and organization. This is a two week course, and both weeks are recommended. However, students have the option to attend just one week. For a more detailed description of the course, please e-mail James Hane ([email protected]).
