SUMMER 2017

Hello great people of God,

What a great program year it has been! Thank you to everyone who has made me, Lori, and Lily feel

so welcome and – better yet – so at home. For the Church of the Good Shepherd has indeed become

our home and we are so deeply grateful to be here! Thank you for all your love, prayers, support, and

friendship. We look forward to being here for many, many years to come! Thanks be to God!

I will be off for most of July and start back August 1st. I shall celebrate on Sunday, July 9th as Lori’s

brother and family are coming to stay with us and I want them to meet you and you to meet them.

They are wonderful and they shall love it here and also love you. (You are an easy bunch to love.)

Also, In July, Lori will take a couple weeks off before she has to return to The Birch Wathen Lenox

School, the Manhattan school where she works as middle school Dean of Students and an active 7th

grade English teacher. Schools can be busy places in the summer for administrators; I’m glad we shall

have some time to explore our new home together before she has to head back to Birch. We shall

tour northern New York and likely continue to see some friends in Canada. Lily comes back from

Guatemala in July, only to venture on to New Orleans. We hope to see her more in late July before

she goes back as a sophomore to Centre College in Kentucky in early August.

At one point this spring, I became curious -- how many programs and ministries do we actually have

here at Good Shepherd? I’d never seen an official tally, but I kept hearing about so many ministries.

So, we created an Excel spreadsheet to identify the ministries, the leaders, and their members. And,

to our amazement, the number is 36.

36 programs and ministries at Good Shepherd!

We redefine the word “active.” Take a look on the next page of this newsletter to see for yourself and

consider joining one that’s new for you next program year.

Enjoy, too, the enclosed articles. They give a flavor of our common life together in just the first

quarter of 2017. It has been a great start to the calendar year! Thank you to everyone for making this

such a nurturing, welcoming, supportive place to explore and live out the Christian faith.

“Glory be to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine:

glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever.”

(BCP, p. 102; Ephesians 3:20, 21) Amen!

With love and gratitude,

Hal Fr. Hal, Rector

SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT – MAY 2017

Since the last newsletter, several important events have come to pass which I’m happy to list below:

o We celebrated a joyous and holy Christmas season with our new Rector.

o We held a punctual Annual Meeting during which we ate, thanked each other for our service to

the church and expressed our hopes for the coming year. A deficit budget, carefully crafted by

our Treasurer and Rector, was also presented for the coming year.

o Father Hal was formally instituted on February 2nd as the Church of the Good Shepherd’s

eighth Rector.

o Holy Week Services and Easter Sunday were well-attended and awesome as usual.

o Wilfried Haensch’s Lenten Study of Knowledge and Ethics showed us that some questions are

not easily answered.

o Our Star Wars themed 60th Anniversary Party was a huge success.

o Our two fundraisers, a Painting Party and a Wimpy Kid Movie Showing, exceeded all

expectations for number of attendees.

o The Youth Group began fundraising for their Relay for Life team.

o Several surveys and Community Forums on church matters such as modifying the service times

for the Christmas Eve services and shrinking the size of the Vestry and were held. As a result of

the parish’s input, the Children’s Christmas Eve service time has been changed from 5:00 pm to

4:30 pm and the Vestry has voted to decrease the number of vestrymembers from 9 to 6. This

decrease will occur gradually over the next 3 years so that by the year 2020 there will be 9

people total on the Vestry (6 vestrymembers, 2 Wardens and 1 Rector).

o Many more things that I know I’ve forgotten but I’m sure will be covered by others in this

newsletter.

What’s next? A lot. Please see our full calendar for upcoming events.

Thanks to everyone who makes these events happen, especially Fay Wright for organizing Hal’s

institution, Amanda Slattery for organizing the Anniversary Party and Diane Buschel and Norm Fulton

for organizing the fundraisers. For those of you I’ve forgotten to thank, my apologies and you know I

think you’re pretty special as well.

Respectfully submitted,

Maria Kaprielian, Senior Warden

TREASURER’S REPORT

Church Financial Position as of April 30, 2017 Church Newsletter June 1, 2017

Through the first four months of 2017 our church's General Operating Fund Net Operating actual

Income of 2017 is a loss of $8,750. This loss results in our General Operating Fund opening balance of

$42,746 being reduced to $33,996. The "Good News" is this pretty much is as we planned for 2017.

We expected at the end of April our 2017 budget would show a loss of $8,019, thus compared to our

actual loss of $8,750 we are only worse than plan by $731.

The main driver of this budget miss is our pledges being $1,786 below what we expected to receive

through the first four months of the year. With the summer approaching us, it is imperative that all of

us try and stay as current as possible with our pledges. Through April our pledge budget is $58,940

and from May until December our pledge budget is $105,436 for a full year budget of $164,376. If

we all do our best to fulfill our pledge commitment, then we will more than likely finish 2017 below

our full year Net Operating Income deficit of $14,000 as opposed to above it.

If you would like further detail or have any other questions, please feel free to approach me at church, email me or call me at home anytime. My home number is 914-962-7048, my email is [email protected]. Respectfully submitted,

Paul H. Miller, Treasurer

FOCUS ON STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship means using everything God has given us—life, talents, possessions—to serve God with love and gratitude, and to promote the mission of His church. The Stewardship Committee, which includes John and Maria Kaprielian, Jan Corning, and Father Hal, will work to encourage good stewardship practices in our congregation.

"For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out."

1 Timothy 6:7-8

Despite the rain and cold we have been experiencing, Summer is nearly here! Hot dog season is upon

us, school will be ending soon, and summer vacations will be taking many of us away from the church

on Sundays more frequently than usual. Therefore it is time for my annual plea to keep up your pledges

over the summer! In fact, now is a great time to reconsider e-pledging, so you don’t even have to think

about your pledge for the rest of the year! You can see Chris Palmer or Paul Miller for the necessary

forms. If e-pledging isn’t for you, please try to send your pledge to the church if you will be away for an

extended time. And be sure to have a fun and relaxing time!

Looking ahead to the Fall Stewardship season, it would be great to have a few new members on the

Stewardship committee, to help us see things from different perspectives, and guide our discussion of

stewardship in the most fair, effective, and spiritual ways possible. Please consider joining us; the time

commitment is quite small – a meeting here and there, helping to stuff envelopes, and helping out with

the Stewardship luncheon. But really it is mostly about bringing ideas, opinions, and energy into the

Stewardship campaign.

I would also like to put in a plug for the Community Center of Northern Westchester, and ask that

everyone try to remember that they need donations of food all year round; Stewardship is not just

about giving to your church—please support the food pantry however you can. Bags and shopping lists

are always available!

Have a wonderful Summer!

With Love in Christ,

John Kaprielian, Stewardship Chair

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Last year the fund raising committee met its goal of raising $11,172 gross and $7,831 net for our

church. This year based on the number of tickets sold for our Movie Premier, we should exceed last

year’s totals. This is what we have planned for this year:

May 20th: Movie Premier – Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Long Haul

October 14th: Antiques Appraisal and Arts Jam – Four additional events are being planned for this

festive day. Adopt – A- Pet, and a Fashion Show with COGS kids being the models. Ongoing with this

will be Fr. Halls’ talk about college scholarships and a talk about my work in jails for kids based on my

book, “Yo God, What the Hell.”

November 17th: Tastes of Somers includes wine tasting, 50/50 raffle, Silent Auction and passed hors

d’oeuvres.

December 9th: bake sale will include, of course, baked items, but with a description of why the baked

item is special in their family.

This is all made possible by the following outstanding committee who have very generously donated

their time, talent and in some cases their money:

Thank you for your support,

OUTREACH NEWS

The Outreach Committee met on March 12 to plan the next few months of Outreach activity.

Our ongoing food collection for the Community Center of Northern Westchester continues to be well

supported by our parishioners. Thank you to all who continue to contribute.

We are making stronger connections between our church and the local organizations which we

support. To this end two members of the Outreach Committee, Yolanda Alexander and Maritza Rosso,

attended the annual fundraiser of the Putnam and Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center

in April. We were very pleased that two executives of this organization, Anne Nadig and Sandy Sola,

joined us for our 60th Anniversary celebration in May. On Mother’s Day we collected baby items for

delivery to the Center.

In March Bruce Barber and Amanda Slattery participated in an Episcopal Charities New Grantseekers

webinar. Good Shepherd has already secured an Episcopal Charities grant for the Community Center

of Northern Westchester and Amanda hopes that we will apply for a grant for the Putnam and

Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center.

The Youth Group will be taking part in Somers Relay for Life on June 16 – 17. Brittany Alexander and

Sidney Rosso have been holding a jewelry sale during coffee hour as an ongoing fundraiser for this

event. In addition, the Youth Group is holding a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, June 3 at the Somers

Mobil Station (293 Route 100) to raise additional funds to support Relay for Life.

A new local outreach opportunity has been presented by Lindsey Velzy. Lindsey has started raising

awareness of the plight of animals cared for by the SPCA center in Briarcliff Manor. She has posted a

list of supplies requested and is planning an “adopt a pet” initiative during our Fall fundraiser.

The Support Connection fundraising walk will take place in FDR park on October 1. If you would like to

take part in the walk or to support the Good Shepherd team please contact Diane Buschel.

Please check the Outreach notice board in the parish hall for up to date details of all our Outreach

projects.

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Pageant, 12th Night: New Session Begins

COGS Sunday school is soaring happily through spring and racing toward a fun summer! During the

first few weeks of June the Sunday school classes will continue to study their usual lectionary based

curriculum. On June 10th we have a very special trip planned with the Youth Group. COGS is heading

to St. John the Divine Cathedral in NYC! The Youth Group will participate in the On Common Ground

Workshop and Tour – a study of world religions. The Sunday school kids will do a Cathedral Highlights

tour and a hands on craft based workshop for their age group. Afterwards we will have a picnic lunch

together. It is sure to be a fantastic day. June 11 marks Sunday School Graduation at the 10AM

Service. This will be a Family Sunday where children will perform many duties during the service.

Each child will also receive a certificate and special prize for his/her dedication to study all year long.

Now, just because we hold Sunday School Graduation, it does not mean an end to Sunday school. We

offer Summer Craft Sundays all summer long. Summer Sundays are very relaxed. Sometimes we just

read a favorite bible passage and talk, others we create a craft, or we play some fun games and

discuss how the rules and outcomes of the games apply to kids’ lives. Please consider signing up (on

the Sunday School Bulletin Board in the Parish Hall) for a Summer Craft Sunday.

Finally, we are planning to hold our 4th Annual Summer Bible Camp August 22-24 from 9:00 -12:30

each day. This year the theme of our Camp is “Making Good Choices.” The First day will focus on

Animals and Friends: Making Loving Choices with all of God’s Creatures. This includes Animal Yoga

and a trip to Muscoot Farm. On day 2 we will turn our attention to The Earth: Making Respectful

Choices for the Environment. This includes designing birdhouses and feeders with the Senior Group,

visiting Stuart’s Farm and creating art with recycled materials. Our final day is Heroes and Wizards:

Making Wise, Strong and Caring Choices. We are so excited to bring a Harry Potter theme into our

camp to include the Sorting Hat, Potions and a meditative labyrinth challenge. Camp is open to

children 4-12 years old. Counseling opportunities for teens 13-18 years old! We hope to invite friends

from all over Westchester so feel free to share the flyer with your friends. Please see us for any

questions!

Thank you to the Sunday school families for sharing your kids with us this year. And thank you to

Bruce Barber, Glenn Hintze, Jeff Donaldson, Jose Trinidad, Vernon and Yolanda Alexander, Teresa

Larsen, Kerry Irwin, Megan Whalen and Maritza Rosso for teaching during our final session of the

school year.

THE SENIOR GROUP: A NEW START

The Church of the Good Shepherd Seniors Group was very busy over the last several

months planning their agenda of events and ministries for 2017. The first event will be a

day trip to the New York Botanical Garden on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 (rain date is June 13,

2017). The traditional Senior Picnic will be held at FDR Park in Yorktown on Wednesday,

July 13, 2017 (rain date July 20, 2017). Additional planned events include a matinee trip to

the Elmsford Evening Dinner Theatre (August), a Hudson River Cruise (September), a trip

to the FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt homes (October) and a trip to the Cathedral and

Rockefeller Center (December). There will also be scheduled speakers throughout the

year on topics such as scamming, home safety and home exercise and wellness. All are

welcome to attend events and speaker presentations. Bring your friends too! Signup

sheets will be located in the hallway leading to the Guild Room.

The Seniors have determined that they will be focusing on helping our Veterans at the VA

Hospital as well as working with people in the community who may be isolated and in

need of companionship. In addition, the seniors will be working with the children at the

Vacation Bible School program this August.

A bulletin board which provides information on senior services available in our

communities, summaries of our meetings and information regarding area events is

located in the Parish Hall. The Seniors Group meets after the 10:00 am service on the first

Sunday of each month unless otherwise noticed. All are welcome!

60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The Church of the Good Shepherd celebrated our 60th Anniversary as a Church on May

4, 2017 with a Eucharist service. We continued the celebration with a Star Wars-themed

party on Saturday, May 6 (May the 4th (Force) be with you!) when costumes were

encouraged, Star Wars foods were consumed and line dancing was enjoyed after dinner.

60 parishioners, friends and community partners enjoyed the celebration with Star

Wars-themed foods and drinks, John Dugan, whose ancestors commissioned Good

Shepherd's bell and Anne Nadig and Sandy Sola from the Putnam and Northern

Westchester Women's Resource Center joined us to celebrate the anniversary. Children

enjoyed a piñata and Star Wars movies screened in the Guild room. The celebration

garnered the Church terrific publicity with a center-page spread in the Somers Record.
