we were graced by many successful guest speakers and Leadership
professionals. While the conference was geared more toward
strengthening universal leadership traits, we all learned many strategies
to bring back to IL Delta and strengthen our chapter.
After three days of
general leadership classes
hosted by professionals from
all over the country, we were
tasked with creating our own
“action plans” to implement
into our fraternity’s operations.
We met fellow Phi Psi’s from
chapters all over the country
through these meetings as well
as through the large-scale service projects that all members contributed
to. I attended the Gleaner Foods project where I and 200 other Phi Psi’s
packaged over 2000 lbs. of food to be distributed amongst the
underprivileged people of Indianapolis. After meeting these fellow

brothers from all over and collaborating to solve problems within our
own chapters, we believe that we are in a great position to influence the
operations of our chapter now, for the future.
The final two days of the
conference were spent meeting
within our district to select the
next Archon that will represent
our chapter to the National
Fraternity. The Illinois Delta
Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi was
recognized as a leading
chapter at the national banquet
on the final night. Taking
home many awards including
Outstanding Alumni
Relations, District Excellence in District IV, Accredited with Honors,
and Meeting Core Standards.

Summer Internships By: Grant Culp
We are very proud of the great accomplishments each brother is
able to achieve. Being able to intern for a company over the summer is
an achievement that each of the brothers below is very proud of. The list
below of brothers and positions shows the diversity Illinois Delta is able
to offer to the professional world. From investment banking to
architecture intern to management intern to engineering internships as
well as software internships. The great work Phi Kappa Psi at the
University of Illinois has put in recently to professional along with
academic development has had a large positive effect, which can be seen
below and through our 6th highest GPA for Spring 2017 on
campus. Below is a list of brothers who have an internship with a
company and the corresponding position they are holding for this
summer.

Rush Scholarships/Events By: Austin Koukol
I am a recruitment chair for the Illinois Delta chapter of Phi Kappa
Psi and would like to share with you our plans for the fall. One of the
biggest things that we are trying to spread the word about is the new
Johnny “Red” Kerr scholarship for incoming freshman. This is given to
the person deemed to have outstanding leadership throughout their high
school careers. At Phi
Psi, we are always
looking for the best
leaders who can bring
success to our chapter.
This scholarship offers
$1,000 dollars for the
first-place winner, and
$250 for each of two
runners-up. We also The Johnny “Red” Kerr Scholarship form
have many events planned for the rush schedule to shed light on our
beautiful new house. Something that worked very well last spring that
will work even better with our new floor plan on the first floor is house
tours and wings. On September 6th, we will be having this event from
6:30-8:30pm. Something every rush wants to see is a brother who shows
pride in their house, and by giving them tours, I believe we can show
them what our brotherhood is about. Not only are we having the tours on
that day, but we will be having barbeques on the porch at least twice a
week during rush, where the brothers will be open to give full-house
tours. We are excited to find the next great class of men to be initiated
into the Illinois Delta chapter of Phi Kappa Psi.

Club Fishing By: Daniel Hanson
The Carhartt College Series Bassmaster Classic is considered one
of the Heartland’s most prestigious collegiate bass fishing competitions,
making it one of the top destinations for the Illini Bass Fishing Club
(IBFC) every year. This year’s Midwest Regional tournament brought
eight anglers and four boats representing the university to Lake of the
Ozarks located six
hours to the southwest
in the unfamiliar
territory of Central
Missouri. Uncharted
waters, inclement
weather and
unorthodox fishing
styles took their toll on Brother Hanson with the fish he caught
our club’s turnout, but the trip was a learning experience and great
source of exposure nonetheless.
Lake of the Ozarks is a 54,000 acre, man-made reservoir in Central
Missouri known to be a large and consistently productive fishery. After
two full days of practice, bites were few and far between, coming most
often by way of natural-colored jerk-baits suspended in 10-15 feet of
water off of secondary points north of the launch.
On the first morning of competition, we motored ten miles to the
north touching speeds just under 60 mph regardless of news of incoming
weather systems. The change in weather flipped on the switch we’d been
waiting for all week and set the jerk-bait bite on fire. We culled around
20 fish and had four over 16 inches in the box before noon when storms
pushed us off the water early. We ended day one with 4 fish for about
8lbs. Storms parted before day two, but left the water stained and
eliminated any chance of the jerk-bait bite we were banking on. We
ended day two with only 2 fish over 15 inches for roughly 4lbs. We
placed in 86th of 130 teams, only 2 ounces behind teammates Chris
13
Burwell and Miles Kopplin who placed in 84th. Nick Schnieder and
Jordan Wolf led the IBFC leaderboard finishing in 74th.
Teammates Ethan Fitzwilliam and Zach Hingson won 2nd place in the
big bass competition by boating a largemouth that weighed in at a barn-
burning 7 lbs. flat, only five ounces out of 1st. Despite our club’s
lackluster performance on the Ozarks this year, big plans for the 2018
Spring Regional are the works in hope of securing top 50 finishes from
all boats competing next year.
Sports Preview By: Roger Blanco
Don’t worry Illini fans, sports looks to be on the rise this coming
year and in the future. First, with basketball. The Illini basketball team
decided to fire head coach John Groce and agree to terms with former
Oklahoma State coach
Brad Underwood.
Underwood is known as
a winner and led
Oklahoma State to a
winning record and an
invite to the NCAA
tournament in his first
year. Prior to the head
coaching change, the Illini had one of the best recruiting classes in the
country, which headlined Jeremiah Tilmon. Tilmon decided to open his
recruitment and ended up choosing to attend Missouri. That didn’t stop
15
the Illini as they were able to land Mr. Illinios Basketball, PG Mark
Smith a 4-star recruit. The class also consists of two other 4-star recruits
PG Trent Frazier and SG Da’Monte Williams.
As for football, with year one under Lovie Smith complete, Lovie
continues to rebuild this program after a 3-9 season. The Illini will play
in two night games
and will open the
season up at home
against Ball State on
Sept. 2. Their Big Ten
schedule consists of
matchups at Iowa and
Ohio State and will
play Wisconsin and
Nebraska at home.
Lovie spoke to the
media about the upcoming season and the future at The Big Ten Media
Days. He announced that dual threat QB Chayce Crouch will be the
starter after coming in last year for an injured Wes Lunt and WR Mike
Dudek will also be ready to go for the season after sitting out the last
two years with an ACL injury in his left knee. The team will have 9
returning starters and will look different on the defensive side of the ball.
Last but not least, the school and Lovie mentioned that there are plans to
add new facilities that will reach up to par with the other programs in the
Big Ten and around college football.
