WHERE CHILDREN LEARN,GROW AND THRIVE.At the Y, we regard each child as a uniqueindividual who needs to be understood, guided,encouraged and appreciated. At this early age,play is a child's most important form of learningand development. We provide programs andactivities where children learn, explore, developathletic skills, build a positive self-image anddevelop social relationships with other children.

PRESCHOOL/EARLY LEARNINGPreschool is an exciting time as children embark on new adventures in theworld of learning. At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual whoneeds to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programsprovide activities where children learn, explore, build a positiveself-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Yprograms encourage children to explore their creativity throughmulti-sensory experiences and create a language-rich environment topromote and foster a love of reading. PRESCHOOL AQUATICSParent/Child Swim Lessons (Ages 6 months to 3 years)Our parent/child swim lessons promote water enrichment and aquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trusted adults.In this program, the developmental experiences of each child are usedto build the child's self-confidence in and out of the water. Parents learnfrom the instructor's example how to guide their children through positivereinforcement and appropriate praise.

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:

• Shrimp (6-8 months) Child can control their head and sitwith support from the hands.

• Kipper (9-12 months) Child can sit without hand support andstand with support from the hands.

• Inia (13-18 months) Child can stand without support and walkwith or without support or aid.

• Perch (19-36 months) Child can run and jump.

Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

Group Preschool Swim Lessons (Ages 3-5)These programs offer children their first experience in the water without aparent. Children learn basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming,including water propulsion, floating, body awareness and independence.They also learn some general aquatic safety and pool games. Children will betaught with and without the use of various instructional flotation devices.

We offer three levels based on developmental abilities:• Pike (Beginner)• Eel (Intermediate)• Ray (Advanced Intermediate)

Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

Level 1: Pike (Ages 3-5) The first level is for beginning swimmers.Swimmers should be able to listen to instructions and follow directions.Swimmers will learn the basic paddle stroke on the front, back and sides.They will also learn kicking skills and grow comfortable with putting theirface in the water.

Level 2: Eel (Ages 3-5) Swimmers will learn to jump into the water withoutassistance and float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or withoutan IFD. Swimmers will also learn to paddle on front, back and sides for 25yards with an IFD and for 15 feet without.

Level 3: Ray (Ages 3-5) In this class, swimmers will learn to front and backfloat for 30 seconds without an IFD; front alternating paddle with rhythmicbreathing for 25 yards with an IFD, and for 20 feet without. Swimmers willalso learn front symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing for 25 yardswith an IFD, and for 20 feet without; do a side alternating paddle for 25yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without; back alternating paddle for 25yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without; and back symmetrical paddlefor 25 yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without. Prerequisites: To enterthis level, swimmers should be able to jump in the water without assistanceand float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or without an IFD.Swimmers should also be able to paddle on front, back and sides for 25yards with an IFD and for 15 feet without.

Level 5: Flying Fish In the Flying Fish class, swimmers willlearn to do a flip turn; swim front crawl 100 yards with bilateralbreathing; swim 100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim100 yards elementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternatingsides; swim 100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to tread waterfor 3 minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststrokewith legal kick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yardselementary backstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with ascissor kick; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 6: Shark In the Shark class, swimmers will learn to taketheir own heart rate; learn about open water and backyard pool safety;swim 100 yards from crawl with flip turns; swim 100 yards breaststrokewith pull-out; swim 50 yards inverted breaststroke; swim 100 yardsbackstroke with dolphin kick and pullout; swim 50 yards over-armsidestroke; swim 25 yards butterfly with streamline; and swim 200 yardsindividual medley. Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should beable to do a flip turn; swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing;swim 100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yardselementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

All of our swim lessons follow the Y of the USA guidelines forswim lessons and focus on five main points: personal growth, personalsafety, stroke development, water sports games and rescue. Classesmay be combined based on enrollment.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and isappropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction.Children will learn kicking skills, the basic paddle stroke on their front, backand sides, and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In the Guppy class, swimmers will learn to front andback float for 1 minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmicbreathing, with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; sidealternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive. Prerequisites: To enter thislevel, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with orwithout an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFDand 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; and be comfortablein deep water.
