PROJECT PROFILESApplied Electronics Creates a Brand New Production Studio & Control Facility for AOL Canada’s The Huffington PostAOL is a media technology company with a mission to simplify the internet for consumers and creators by unleashing the world’s best builders of culture and code. AOL Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc., is committed to continuously innovating, growing and investing in brands and experiences that inform, entertain and connect the world through its world-class collection of premium brands, including The Huffington Post Canada, Autoblog Canada & Quebec, StyleList Canada & Quebec, Parentdish, Moviefone, TechCrunch, Engadget, and AOL Originals.

AOL Canada creates original content that engages audiences on a local and global scale, and it serves the latest Canadian and world news covering politics, business, lifestyle and the viral web through its popular digital platform, The Huffington Post.

In Spring of 2015, AOL Canada approached Applied Electronics to design and build a brand new production studio and control room for The Huffington Post, at its headquarters in Toronto, which would facilitate the recording of interview segments and the production and streaming of live shows on the web.

AOL required a highly efficient, compact production and control facility that could accommodate a small production team, yet had the capacity and capability for future growth and operational expansion. Timeline was a concern as the new facility needed to be fully operational within six weeks of the initial order. With value engineering in mind, the Applied Electronics Broadcast Systems Group worked with AOL to define equipment, workflow and facility layout.

PROJECT PROFILESApplied Electronics Builds Out Twelve Floors of Pembina Pipeline Head Office to Facilitate Collaboration and GrowthBased in Calgary, Pembina Pipeline is one of the largest and most diversified energy infrastructure companies in Canada. To facilitate their strategic plan for growth and collaboration, Pembina engaged Applied Electronics’ audio visual systems design and integration services to build out all of the meeting and collaboration spaces across the 12 floors of their corporate head office, including a large multi-purpose conference centre.

Over the course of a year, Applied Electronics equipped 37 meeting rooms, six 12- to 32-seat boardrooms, two training rooms, a trading floor, a social space, multiple cafeterias, and a conference centre, which could be converted into four separate conference spaces to accommodate corporate events of any size, with full audio visual systems.

Meeting rooms were suited up with either Sharp LCD monitors or Da-Lite front projection screens with Panasonic ultra-wide throw projectors; and Barco ClickShare wireless presentation and collaboration systems to provide media source connectivity. For meetings that require the participation of remote team members, Pembina’s video conferencing meeting rooms, along with some of the executive boardrooms, are integrated with Cisco video conferencing systems, Tannoy ceiling flush mounted speakers, Clockaudio hypercardiod table mics with push to talk capability, Crestron DigitalMedia presentation system, and Crestron FusionRV remote asset management software was deployed along with Crestron TPMC-4SM touch panels with room scheduling capability.

Applied Electronics Upgrades Shaw Media Master Control with New Video Wall Twenty-five million Canadians a week count on Shaw Media for their news, information and entertainment. Shaw Media, part of Shaw

Communications Inc., proudly operates Global Television and 19 of the country’s most popular specialty channels, and their online companions, including Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada, HISTORY, Slice, National Geographic Channel and Showcase. Shaw Media also offers viewers strong local and national news programming from coast to coast.

Shaw Media reached out to Applied Electronics to provide a new video display wall solution for their master control room, which monitors all 19 channels with numerous feeds broadcasted across Canada. The master control room previously had segmented video display walls composed of mixed technologies from different manufacturers. Shaw Media desired a more dynamic yet ergonomic setup for its master control operations staff that would offer a simplistic view of the video wall from which to control and monitor all the feeds.

Applied Electronics proposed a consolidated, seamless display wall solution from Barco that met the requirements of the Shaw Media team, including an extensive evaluation process where key Shaw Media engineers conducted a manufacturer site visit in Anaheim, California, to gain insight on the selected technology and Barco’s product development, quality control and test measures.

Applied Electronics 2015 Annual Ontario Golf TournamentAugust 10th marked the 29th anniversary of the Applied Electronics 2015 Annual Ontario Golf Tournament.

With tremendous support from our generous sponsors, we were honoured to have so many customers, representing a good cross section of the industry, attend this marquee client appreciation event. The day started out beautifully with sunny skies, and although Mother Nature brought the showers to Nobleton in the afternoon, it did not stop many golfers in our tournament from continuing their game on the green – some even finishing all 18 holes! Now that’s dedication to the Game!

We sincerely thank all of the technology partners whom helped to make this day possible. We appreciate the ongoing support of this event and its tradition, and we hope you enjoyed the day at Nobleton Lakes Golf Club as much as we did.

We look forward to another tremendous tournament next year (minus the uncooperative weather, of course).

NEW TECHNOLOGIESEMC Isilon Scale-out Storage LineEMC announced the addition of a new node type to their Isilon scale-out storage line. This new node offers higher-density storage than any other Isilon nodes, specifically 354TB raw capacity in 4U of rack space.

Isilon’s new operating system 7.1.1 adds the option of SmartFlash, or level 3 (L3) cache, using solid-state drives (SSDs) to hold file data and metadata released from L2 cache, increasing the total size of cache memory available in a cluster as well as the speed that you can retrieve data.

Isilon HD400With massive scalability, robust data protection options, and a high-density footprint, EMC Isilon HD400 scale-out NAS is ready for Big Data requirements including deep archiving and as a disaster recovery target. Isilon HD400 is also a great choice as a data lake foundation.

Scale out from 1 PB in a 3-node cluster to 50 PB in a 144-node cluster - all under a single file system that stays simple to manage at any capacity. Store up to 3.2 PB in a single rack. The high density helps you lower operating costs for power, cooling, and data center floor space by as much as 50%.

Key features: • Houses 60 drives per node in a 4U chassis: 59 x 6 TB HDDs, 1 x 800 GB SSD per node

• Delivers high density storage of 3.2 PB capacity per rack

• Scales out to 50 PB within a single volume

• Secures data with options including file system auditing, role-based access control (RBAC), and write once-read many (WORM) data protection

SmartFlashSmartFlash offers a cost-effective method of extending main memory per node from gigabytes to terabytes. This allows clients to retain a larger working set of data in cache, before being forced to retrieve data from spinning disk via a HDD operation.

OneFS With OneFS, Isilon storage systems are simple to install, manage and scale, at virtually any size -- organizations and administrators can scale from as little as 18 TB to greater than 20 PB within a single file system, single volume, with a single point of administration. OneFS delivers high levels of performance, throughput, and capacity, without adding management complexity. Simple is Smart.
