James S. Branciforte

Enjoy this Lifetimes, as you read of dreams realized and promises fulfilled at Lifetime Assistance. Through the exceptional drive, ambition and hard work of so many amazing individuals, assisted by extraordinarily dedicated and skilled service personnel, coupled with the support of our wonderfully engaged community, there is very good news to share.

Congratulations to Board members Chairman Don Furey and Barbara Hawes, who together have provided 40(!) years of dedicated volunteer services to Lifetime, always setting the highest standards in guiding organizational services. Enjoy the news of work center employees engaging with Senator Ranzenhofer to promote jobs and employment; of Lifetime’s outstanding transportation services – hats off

to 60 drivers who saw their passengers safely through one of Rochester’s coldest winters ever; and news of the warmth, comfort and closeness of family at our home on Island Cottage Drive. Particularly moving is the personal story of Katlin who is extraordinary in so many ways, including her recent debut in an independent film!

On a more official note, Lifetime’s community leadership position has been reaffirmed once again, with New York State’s award of six major grants, tapping Lifetime’s experience and expertise in helping to design the service delivery systems of tomorrow.

Thank you to our many supporters who assure a strong, spirited entrepreneurial organization dedicated to inclusive, meaningful lives for our friends, neighbors and family members of all abilities. You are brightening lives and changing our world, and we are deeply grateful.

Dennis Powell has been a driver at Lifetime Assistance for five years, but as far as he’s concerned, “the people who I get to drive each day are like family.” For the individuals who depend on Lifetime Assistance for transportation to and from work every day, the feeling is mutual. “I just love talking to Dennis;” says Robbie, one of Dennis’ passengers, “He’s funny and he listens to me.”

JUST A RIDE

More than

Sixty drivers make up the transportation team at Lifetime Assistance; each rising with the sun every morning to provide much more than a safe and punctual ride to work. Come rain or snow, the dedicated team offers a sunny start to the day with familiar greetings, easy conversation, and the ability to meet each individual’s needs for comfort and security. “The main thing you need in this job is patience and understanding,” says Dennis; although the eight young adults that he drives would probably argue that he offers much more.

“I like my ride to work,” says Stephen Rose. “I can talk to my friends and listen to music.” For Stephen and the 512 others who rely on drivers like Dennis, the enjoyable ride sets a positive tone for the promising day ahead.

ONYOUROWN

MEET KatlinDetsch

Katlin Detsch has played many roles in her 24 years. She’s a star daughter, sister, aunt, friend, hardworking employee, Special Olympics athlete, and self-advocate. Having successfully auditioned for a student filmmaker’s upcoming movie, Katlin can add “lead actress” to her list of accomplishments. Katlin’s newest role will be as Gianna, a young woman with Down’s Syndrome whose father has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“The movie is about a girl like me who doesn’t have anywhere to go after her father dies. It’s sad, but it has a good ending for my character,” Katlin explains. The upcoming film, “On Your Own,” by RIT student Tianyi Wang, depicts the frightening struggle that families endure when planning for the future care of their loved ones with a disability. “There’s a chance that there’s nowhere for Katlin to go after I’m gone, and that’s really scary;” relates Katlin’s mom, Charlene Detsch. “I’m proud to be part of a movie that addresses this serious issue for parents of children with disabilities.”

Katlin and her mom are hopeful that the film will provide a voice for the families anxiously applying for services. “It shines a light on the fact that 1,200 people in New York State alone are on a wait list for residential services,” explains Charlene. “Due to budget cuts, this situation keeps on getting more serious. I’m thrilled that Katlin had the opportunity to be part of a project that addresses such an important issue.”

Katlin’s touching performance not only debuts her genuine talent, but also shines a light on so many families’ growing concern.

Providing engaging recreational activities for so many people of varying age, ability and interest is a tall order, but Pat is up to the task; “I don’t see the individuals who I work with as having disabilities; each person is just unique with different interests and strengths.”

True to the mission at Lifetime Assistance, Pat is committed to his program participants and their families. “When I was in the hospital, Pat offered to provide Brian’s transportation to and from activities;” remembers Dorothy Mann, “He’s really like family to all of us.”

Sports teams and volunteer groups foster community involvement and socialization opportunities, but the benefits don’t end there. Aylanah Laurie Katz sees her daughter, Jenny, gaining life skills that will continue long after the day’s activities come to an end. “It is amazing to see how these young adults have blossomed in confidence and learned to appreciate what life has to offer.”

For more information about Recreational Services activities, contact Pat Dadey at 585-426-7675, x3051, or [email protected].

Pat Dadey wears many hats as head of the recreational program at Lifetime Assistance. For 25 years he has been a

leader, friend, supporter, and coach to participants in this dynamic program; offering a variety of opportunities from

sporting events and dancing to travel and cooking class. “When our son graduated from high school, he left behind

all of his friends, which was an abrupt end to daily social activities,” explains Mary McGonigal, whose son, Kyle,

participates in the program. “Lifetime’s recreation group has remedied that social need for Kyle.”

Federal Funds Awarded for Long-term Care InvestmentNew York State Office for People with

Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD)

has awarded Lifetime Assistance

one agency-specific grant and five

collaborative grants, totaling

4.3 million dollars.

New York State has awarded the grants

through the New York State Balancing

Incentive Program Transformation Funds to

make strategic investments in long-term

supports and services.

“This is a very impressive win for Lifetime,”

says Lifetime Assistance CEO James S.

Branciforte. “This was a highly competitive

process and strongly endorses Lifetime’s work

in preparing for the service delivery system

of tomorrow.”

Lifetime’s agency specific funds, totaling

$720,000, will pilot a sustainable person-

centered housing transitions model; designed

to offer and safely guide interested individuals

from the current group home setting to

Family Care and integrated community-

based residences.

The remaining $3.6 million awarded

in collaborative funds will be used

to increase housing options, improve

employment opportunities, and

provide quality healthcare for

PerspectiveWhat drives you to give?

Is it just being asked? Do you have an emotional connection? Is there someone you want to memorialize, or would you like to leave a legacy after you’re gone? Or do you simply want to make a difference?

Whatever your reason, charitable giving provides countless personal benefits; including mental and physical health! From reduced stress levels, better immune function and a sense of personal satisfaction, your generosity can go further than you may have thought.

But where do you start, and how do you know where to give? With 1.1 million charities nationwide, it’s certainly not easy to decide where to invest your gifts. You may already know what cause you wish to support, or you may still need to do research to find the organization that fits your values. Whether you are ready to give, or still searching for a connection, you’ll want to ask: What is the agency’s mission and history? How will my funds be used? What percentage of my donation will go to services?

I encourage you to explore our work at Lifetime Assistance. We take pride in our grassroots history, and our steadfast mission that we’ve upheld since 1978. We treasure each one of our donors and value every hard-earned dollar that you entrust to our care. And with your support, we will continue to provide opportunities of a lifetime.

Thank you for making the Lifetime Assistance Foundation your charitable giving choice!

Lifetime Assistance

Thanks to the generosity of Lifetime Assistance Foundation’s donors, the Mobility and Accessibility Campaign is making huge strides in improving the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities.

For Jerry DeWinde, the campaign’s goal to foster independence by acquiring adaptive equipment has already been a success. “I feel much safer with the new equipment, and I no longer need two staff to lift me;” says Jerry of the adaptations in his Pinnacle Road home. Jerry is also excited about kitchen modifications that will allow him and his housemates to make their own meals and help with clean up. “The equipment has helped all of the guys at my home; without it we wouldn’t be as independent and mobile.”

With current funds totaling $380,000; the foundations, individuals, and businesses that have contributed have made a tremendous difference for participants in day service programs and homes such as Jerry’s. The safety and autonomy that lifts, transfers and accessibility adaptations provide change lives; and the gift of mobility is truly priceless.

Accessibility Campaign, contact Jamie Rada at (585) 784-5002.

Lifetime Assistance has a vision to assist

each person to reach his or her full potential

and realize the opportunities of a lifetime.

Thanks to a special Lifetime quality initiative

focused on quality of life improvements for

individuals with developmental disabilities,

the homes and day programs at Lifetime

Assistance are making this vision a reality.

The unique initiative allowed each

program and home to choose how to

enhance the quality of participants’ lives.

Some chose activities such as Bills games,

cultural events, and concerts; while others

enjoyed purchasing fitness equipment,

iPads, and karaoke machines. For all

involved, the common thread remained

sincere gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill

dreams of those receiving services.

Twelve individuals make up the dynamic household; each fluent in American Sign language. “A willingness to learn sign language is a requirement to work in this house,” says Stacey LaPointe, Assistant Manager; “Classes from the Rochester School for the Deaf are offered regularly, but I learned the most from the people living here.”

In addition to their unique methods of communication, each individual contributes something special to the cohesive group, and every person is valued. “We know each other really well, and we all respect and care about each other;” Jason Belicove states frankly. “All of us and the staff are absolutely a family.”

Lifetime Assistance’s commitment to helping people achieve meaningfulemployment has caught the attention of leaders in the community. Recently, New York State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer visited Rochester to meet employees at Lifetime Assistance work centers. LAICO Industries and Services, and Classified Scanning and Shredding Services (CSS) are divisions of Lifetime Assistance that work with local corporations to secure community employment. Senator Ranzenhofer had the opportunity to meet with Janine Westa and Matt Crowley, two participants in this unique business. The three discussed the value of their work and the satisfaction of earning a paycheck; bringing personal perspective to the Senator’s support as an advocate of work centers throughout the state.

For local companies, the value of Lifetime Assistance work centers speaks for itself. A recent presentation by Steve Schiano of IMS and Randy Kemp of Hochstein School of Music & Dance allowed these employers to share their success in adopting inclusive hiring practices. The partnerships they have formed with Lifetime Assistance have enhanced their businesses, while providing job satisfaction for dedicated workers with developmental disabilities.

At a recent “Moving Up” ceremony, participants of LAICO Vocational Services were recognized for moving on from the work center to an opportunity of greater independence; either in supportive employment or an integrated community worksite. Marty Reeners, who oversees the work center, congratulated the proud employees; emphasizing, “This is why you are here. This is what you are working to achieve.”
