2015-16 Boards of Directors

We are in Good Hands!Highland Christian School is excited to welcome new administrative leadership next school year. Mr. Bob Payne is scheduled to begin his work schedule in July. Mr. Payne has a long and successful career in leading Reformed, CSI Christian schools. The structure of Reformed, CSI Christian schools is such that it provides leadership which continues to be effective, even when a school such as Highland Christian is searching for a new Administrator. We will be in good hands!

HCS Board of Directors provides continuity in leadership. Each elected board member serves a three year overlapping term. Many board members serve more than a single term. Board members are strongly connected to Highland Christian School as parents or grandparents. They have a deep interest in the educational standards, maintenance of the facilities, and the overall school climate. They understand the culture of our school. Especially important, each meeting that board members attend begins and ends with prayer and devotion. HCS is in good hands!

The teaching staff is divided into four educational categories: SEC (early childhood), Primary (K-2), Elementary (3-5), and Junior High (6-8). Department Heads oversee and coordinate the activities of students and teachers within these categories. The Department Heads meet every other week with the Principal and Assistant Principal on behalf of their department. Teachers are experienced, licensed (requirement) and often they are vested to the school. Many teachers’ children presently attend or have attended HCS. Teachers come together at the beginning and end of each week to pray and have devotions. It is also the desire of each teacher to devote their classrooms to God. our children are in good hands!

Support personnel daily affect the operation of the school. Secretaries (administrative and financial), Development Director, custodian, librarian, Before and After Care personnel, classroom aides, kitchen/hot lunch personnel, and bus drivers extend the mission of Highland Christian School into their daily activities. These individuals are often the first contact and face of Highland Christian School. All work together – hand in hand, to embrace the mission and vision of HCS and to make them come alive. Highland Christian is in good hands!

HCS Volunteers, ETC Volunteers and Parent Teacher Organization (Uber volunteers!) make significant contributions to many areas of the school’s programs and support functions. Through the donation of time and brain power, they have raised thousands of dollars in financial support of special school projects, planned special events for families and expressed appreciation for our students and staff. These folks lend a helping hand whenever they are asked. yes, Highland Christian School is in good hands!

We hold on to this promise from the Bible, Highland Christian School’s main textbook: Psalm 31:14-15a, “But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands… “We really are in good (God’s) hands!

Fourth Grade travels Back in timeThe fourth graders took a field trip to Buckley Homestead in Lowell, Indiana. The day started off a little chilly, then warmed up as they toured the one-room schoolhouse, the working farm, and the 1850s log cabin. Guides, who dressed in historical clothing, told them all about how life would have been different for children their age back then. The boys would have had to work hard on their family farms and the girls would have spent a lot more time helping mom with the difficult household chores. School was quite different back then, too. Our left-handed students were especially glad for modern school because students 100 years ago were only allowed to write with their right hands! The fourth graders were a little more thankful for modern conveniences after this trip!

The first graders had the opportunity to get out of the classroom and experience a fun, yet educational, field trip when they visited the Calumet City Fire Station and Sand Ridge Nature Center.

One of our first grade parents, Dave Neibert, also a fire fighter at Cal City Fire Station, gave an outstanding tour! We observed how the firemen live there each day, viewing their bunks, kitchen, weight room, and living room. We saw many fire engines, fire trucks, and paramedic rescue trucks. We watched them put on their special protective gear for fighting fires, and also learned about fire safety. The highlight of the tour was when the children were given a ride in the basket of the ladder truck, and were able to spray the fireman’s hose to put out a pretend fire! Now, many of our first grade students want to be fire fighters when they grow up.

Next we went to the beautiful Sand Ridge Nature Center. Upon arrival, we toured a log cabin full of artifacts from the past. The students hiked trails through woodlands, and wetlands with ponds and marshes. God made a variety of wildflowers, trees, birds, and animals that the children observed. Inside the Nature Center there were many things to touch and feel, such as furs, feathers and skulls. There were creatures to see, including an owl, hawks, a variety of turtles, and an active bee colony.

We were all thankful for a day where we could learn about our community heroes - the fire fighters, and for a chance to explore, observe, and touch God’s amazing creation.

Electrical SafetyDo you know how to stay safe around electricity? The fourth graders do! As part of a science unit on electricity, we invited Mr. Ingram from NIPSCO to share his Safety Village. Using a 10 foot model of a village, he demonstrated what we should do in certain hazardous situations involving electricity. The model made zapping and popping noises to show how electrical energy can flow from one object to the next. After the presentation, students made electrical safety posters to display in the hall.

Kings in a BottleTake 20 items from around your house, an empty pop bottle or bag, and a little creativity and what do you have? Kings in a Bottle, of course! The fourth graders were given the assignment to find 20 small things from around their house that represented the kings of Israel and Judah and explain the connections to the class. Some creative ideas were a twisty spiral stick to represent the downward spiral of the kings, a piece of fabric to represent how the prophet Ahijah tore his robe to show Jeroboam how God would separate the kingdom, and a bag of dirt to represent how Abijah was buried with his ancestors. The students really enjoyed hearing the creative presentations.

Sonshine Enrichment Center Sonshine Enrichment Center has once again completed a school year filled with FUN learning. We experienced special learning excursions this spring, including a tour of Van Til’s grocery store. We then turned our classroom into a grocery store. We made grocery lists, shopped, had stockers, cashiers, and baggers. It was great fun imitating the grown-ups we observed doing these activities. Our 5-day students were able to visit Midwest Training Center and go through a variety of gymnastic activities. We learned it

takes a lot of energy and practice to execute those gymnastic moves!!! God also graced us with warm, sunshiny weather so we could once again visit The Children’s Farm in Palos Heights. This is always a hit with our students, as they are welcome to touch many different animals while learning more about them.

SEC ended the year with 105 students. Fifty-nine of those students are kindergarten-bound. Graduation was held for them, with their families and friends on May 20 in our school gym. These graduates performed songs, poems, and verses for their audience. The gym was packed with loved ones anxious to congratulate their special graduate. We wish all our students God’s blessings this summer and throughout their school years.

Flag KnowledgeTrinity Frazier and Noah Kieft were awarded highest levels in HCS for their Flag Knowledge. The test was given by the American Legion and the awards were presented by Mike Marlow, Flag Education Chairman. Noah Kieft tested highest for all the schools associated with Post 180 in Highland!

Women’s Prayer GroupEvery Friday, when school is in session, women gather at 8:30 a.m. to share prayer requests within the HCS community. At 8:45, they begin praying. The prayers are for the school programs, the staff and students, and also for personal concerns that are not directly related to the school, but have an impact on our community. This is a wonderful way to be involved and support the school - by communicating with our Father. We are always looking for new prayer warriors. Please feel welcome to leave requests, even if you can’t join us in prayer. If you have any questions, please contact Taliaha Koutz at 923-9410.

Mr. Rinkenberger and Mrs. van Belle did it again! They directed a fantastic rendition of the musical Annie. With a cast filled with musical junior high students and toe tapping songs, two fun nights were enjoyed by an audience of friends and family. The back stage crew was professional and quick - changing the many scenes and props. It was a great final showing for our 8th grade students, who will go on to act or change sets at their new high schools next year. We will miss them. The cast was invited to entertain at thet etc...Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and were able to finish their songs, despite an equipment failure. All of the diners enjoyed the show and the talents of our students.

Deep River County ParkIn March, the third graders had the opportunity to go to Deep River County Park to learn how maple syrup is made. We saw how the trees are tapped, and then how the sap is boiled until it becomes maple syrup. We learned that it takes 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of maple syrup! We also learned that spring in northwest Indiana has just the right weather for maple trees to make the sap - it gets below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. Our field trip even included time travel! The Voyageurs, French fur traders from colonial times, taught us how the Native Americans would use maple syrup. The next time these third graders pour pure maple syrup on their pancakes, they’ll know just how it came to be!

young author’s Festivalat trinity Christian College

Watching illustrations come to life, sharing stories, laughter and singing, watching improvisational acting, and meeting new friends. These were just some of the highlights from this year’s Festival. The featured illustrator was Marissa Moss, author and illustrator of the Amelia’s Notebook series and much more. Several Christian schools in the area sent a group of students to Trinity to participate in this special day. At HCS, each child in grades 1-5 writes and illustrates their own book. Then, two “authors” with

outstanding writing and illustrating are chosen to go from each class. This year’s “young authors” were: Caleb Kieft, Micah McGuire, Jordyn Meyers, Riley Jellema, Jaden Poortinga, Lydia O’Riley, Nadine Koutz, Caden Vander Meyden, Gwen Foreman, Elijah Poninski, Nora Filler, Brendon Roy, Adam Leep, Addison Bandstra, Audrey Yonkman, Donny Woo, Hailey Ross, Max Meter, Jordan Warren, and Mya Bailey. Two very talented seventh grade writers also joined the group: Olivia DeYoung and Savannah Morgan. Congratulations, students!

Pen PalsThis year, the 8th graders and 2nd graders were pen pals! In the fall, the students wrote notes introducing themselves and asking questions they wanted answered. They wrote back and forth several times, even exchanging Christmas cards!

The classes finally met for the first time at the end of March. The 2nd graders showed off their classroom and shared the Young Author’s Books they had written. Many of the 8th graders remembered doing that!

In May, the classes met again in Mrs. Groen’s room. The pen pals exchanged their final notes, and the 8th graders taught some Spanish!

The experience was fun for everyone. The students learned about writing letters, how to ask questions and give answers clearly, and how to be patient waiting for an answer. Being a pen pal created some fun school memories.

Students Earn RoyaltiesNovember was National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and seventh graders Olivia DeYoung, Anna Lenting, Kayla Sylvester, Lauren Woo, and Madeline Zandstra participated in the Young Writers’ Program. This division required students to write 30,000 words in 30 days. The girls eagerly took up the challenge and met their word-count goals by midnight on November 30; then the editing began. Countless hours were spent revising with the help of parents, relatives, and friends. A publishing deadline loomed ahead - June 1.

Who could have imagined that five HCS students would become published authors? Incredible, but true! Kayla’s book, Wake Up, Lauren’s The Catalyst, and Olivia’s The Haunting of Thurland Castle are already available on Amazon. Soon, Madeline’s The Life of a Bunny, and Anna’s Dandelions will join them. Needless to say, HCS will be excited to feature the works of these young authors in the school library next year.

national Spelling BeeHCS 8th grade student, Julia Oostema, faced 283 competitors and placed 50th in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C in May. This is an amazing finish for a first-time participant. Congratulations Julia!

law DayMay 1 was proclaimed Law Day back in the 1950s by President Eisenhower. Each year bar associations all over the United States send attorneys to speak on topics of the law. This year’s theme was “The Magna Carta,” honoring the 800th birthday of that document (1215).

Mr. Michael Campbell, an attorney employed by Schwerd, Fryman, and Torrenga, LLP, presented the topic to both 8th grade classes. He stressed the importance of the Rule of Law and equal rights under the law. Students also had an opportunity to ask broader questions about the legal profession.

7th Grade Boys’ Volleyball The 7th grade boys’ volleyball team had a great season. They won many games this year and it was evident how much they improved. The team took second place in their first tournament, and went undefeated at the Illiana Tournament. The team consisted of Ethan Verhagen, James Klapak, Lance Mulderink, Marc Prince, Eddie Spoelman, Ben Meter, Alex Sanchez, and Josh Matiscik. Congratulations on the great season guys!

track and Field 2015 The Huskies had a marvelous season this spring. The Boys’ Team took a first place and the Girls’ Team took fourth place in the League Championship Meet. Mr. Van Dyke and Mr. Vander Woude were very pleased with the attitudes, work ethic, and athletic depth. Not only did the teams do well in running events, but also did very well in field events. Both teams had excellent showings at each meet this year and were strong from top to bottom. We are excited to see how the returners improve next season!

Attempting to break records is always a big part of any season. This season Isaac Sytsma set two new records in the 100 meter dash with 12:37 and the 400 meter run with 57:34. Additionally, James Klapak, Marc Prince, Kyle Mulderink, and Isaac Sytsma set a new record in the 800 meter Medley Relay with a time of 1:51.84. Go, Huskies!

Faithful Service We want to thank all of the teachers for their faithful service to Highland Christian School. We especially recognize the following teachers for reaching significant anniversary dates. Thank you for your years of serving and caring for our children.

trebuchet A trebuchet is a mid-evil siege weapon that uses a falling counterweight to throw a projectile. 8th grade students were required to design and then build their own trebuchet. Students were then asked to test their trebuchet extensively. A final “test” let students show how well they had mastered their design. The purpose of the unit was three-fold; first to manipulate the principles of physics, second to gather and organize data, and third to utilize the predictability and repeatability of simple machines.

There is an element of learning that is social; rooted directly in the action of observing patterns of response. To this end we are grateful for the individuals who give generously, bear witness openly, and demonstrate love for others through their actions. As you shared in the community of Highland Christian School this year, you took us

BaCK to tHE BaSiCS:CoMMunity 101.

We share our belief in Jesus Christ. We share a high value for Christ-centered education. But iron can only sharpen iron if contact occurs. When we come together to take collective action on behalf of students and their families - we grow individually and God affects positive change in our hearts and community.

Thank you for coming together to help meet the needs of our School. Whether to raise funds for a project, care for the building and grounds, or participate in student activities, every time we gathered– you built each other up in the LORD, developed deeper relationships and strengthened our school- all to the glory of God.

“God’s work, in God’s waywill never lack God’s supply.”

Questions stir curiosity. Answers build knowledge. Ideas are cultivated and stories begin. We are in their lives for a moment – so every moment must matter - with the weight of eternity. Christian education is all about responding to God’s call.

Yes. There is an academic course we follow in curriculum. There is a business plan we follow in education. However, preparing students for the next level of education is just the beginning.

In our Christ-centered learning community, we listen carefully, respond to the Holy Spirit and take every opportunity to demonstrate the glory of God in all of life’s aspects: through history and discovery; human achievement and failure, in joy and in tragedy. We observe His sovereignty, bear witness to His mercy and rejoice in His redemption. Our classrooms and community are a launch pad for the life He is designing for each of our students.

We are called together for specific tasks, specific ends. Here in the midst of His calling, our lives touch and for a brief moment when our callings align, we shine His light into their lives. No matter where you fall on the continuum, we praise God for His faithfulness.

➙to our parents and grandparents who have followed God faithfully: thank you, the Lord is good, and He is doing a mighty work through you

auction RecapHow exciting to see the gym packed with people on Auction Night (April 25)! It is incredibly rewarding to see everyone pull together for this annual fundraising event. Students, parents, auction committee members, and teachers work hard for the benefit of our school. What a wonderful reflection of God’s blessings on Highland Christian School!

The Auction logo for our books and shirts coincided with this year’s theme verse, “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8. Our gratitude and congratulations go to 8th grader, Cate Peerbolte, who designed the logo!

The Auction Committee would like to send our sincere appreciation to all who participated in the Auction and Bake Sale, those who helped behind the scenes, setting up, displaying and tagging items, baking, cooking and those who donated their time shopping for items. We also thank the kitchen staff who worked diligently to keep us all fed throughout the night!

The Auction wouldn’t succeed without the faithful donors or without those who attend each year. We are grateful for you and your generous support, and we thank the Lord for his continued faithfulness in blessing our school!

etc... a resale marketplaceBurton & ardess Van ProoyenAt etc... a resale marketplace, we are referred to as “the picture guy” and “the shoe lady”; however, you may know us as Burton and Ardess Van Prooyen. Since etc... a resale marketplace opened its doors six years ago, we have been volunteering two afternoons a week at the store. Burton inspects, prices, and then displays the pictures and frames, while I sort, clean, size and then price the shoes. Presently there are over 100 pictures hanging throughout the store and approximately 400 pairs of shoes on the display racks. How amazed we are with how God has provided such generous donations from all of you!

Why do we work at etc...? We strongly believe the words of scripture from Proverbs 22:6, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it” and from Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light

for my path”. We, as well as our siblings, children, and grandchildren have attended Christian schools. Burton served on Highland Christian School Board and I have served on various committees associated with HCS. We have seen the benefits of a Christian-centered education in our lives – not only the way we view God, but also how we view the world, the church, and our neighbor.

The cost of Christian education, however, can be expensive and many families struggle during difficult financial times. etc... was formed to raise monies to help with the rising cost of Christian education. As grandparents and supporters of Christian education, we have chosen to volunteer at etc... We feel it is a wonderful opportunity to serve the Lord, be involved in our community, and support HCS.

Would you consider joining the etc... family? We invite you to just stop by and see what etc... is all about. We promise it is not all work! Our time is quite often filled with smiles, laughs, and times of reminiscing. We enjoy fellowship with co-workers, as well as customers. And how could we forget to mention the sharing of delicious treats during break time? Volunteer today and make a difference in a child’s life tomorrow!

etc... a resale marketplaceClothing DriveThe Junior High Student Council sponsored their second annual clothing drive for the school’s thrift store, etc... a resale marketplace. Promoting the drive as a contest between the classes proved to be both successful and fun. Council members braved the elements every morning to help unload bags, boxes, and baskets from cars in the drop-off line. They also labeled and weighed each donation. By the end of the week, over 2,500 pounds of clothing had been collected and the trailer was full! Mrs. Reynhout’s second grade class tipped the scale at over 600 pounds, but many other classes were “clothes” behind. Thank you for all your donations!
