Newsletter-This is newsletter is published three times per year. The dates are approximately March 31, August 31 and November 30. If you want something published please get it to me two weeks prior to the publication date. I will be issuing some more timely items on an as needed basis.. I would love to hear from anyone as to the types of things that they think would be of value in this newsletter or in the accompanying “panel discussion” email.

Sponsors These people sell products related to your shooting. Please use them, where possible, as a thanks for helping support us through their ads. When you do order, be sure to tell them thanks for the support.

Panel discussion Once again we have a very interesting panel discussion. The question who to best spend your time the day prior to the match. Note: The panel discussion will be in a separate email.

Donations Thanks to those who contributed beyond their membership fee this year. Daniela Sirbu and Tyler Ross

Associate membership

There is now an associate membership available for those who wish only to receive the digital copy of the newsletter. The price for 2016 is $5 Canadian for the year. What a bargain! Don’t rely on someone passing you a copy get your own by filling out the membership form.

If you are reading this and haven’t paid your fee please send it to the ASRA address.

SCATT machines- ASRA clubs and members have an opportunity to use a SCATT machine for training and/or demonstrations. These machines are available on a first come first serve basis. For details see the form near the end of this newsletter. It has been decided to charge a nominal fee of $1 per day so everyone can afford them but in turn they won’t sit idle with the “clock running”. If you wish to obtain the units contact Wynn Payne at [email protected] . They come complete with a computer with the software installed and all the cables and mechanical pieces. They will arrive in a locked padded hard case that allows for Greyhound shipping.

This provides a great opportunity for the athlete and the coach to look at the tracing of an athlete’s hold before the shot is fired. It is an awesome training tool. All shooting on them has to be done in dry fire mode so ensure your air rifles can dry fire. .22 rifles just need a piece of brass in the chamber.

Hello ASRA members,

My name is Daniela Sirbu. Many of you may already know me, especially if you shoot air rifle. I have been

shooting competitively for almost half my life and within the past 5 years started to shoot and compete at the

international level. Because of my active involvement in the sport of air rifle, I have decided to become a Kurt

Thune dealer.

Many of you may know or have dealt with our current Kurt Thune dealer, Wayne Sorenson, based out of

Calgary. He has decided to step down as an active dealer and allowed me to take over in his place.

I remember buying my first shooting suit from him and the instant improvements I experienced. I hope to help

and service the shooters of Alberta and beyond, the same way I was once helped by Wayne in my developing

years.

I am often at the competitions held in Alberta, so feel free to come over and introduce yourself and see what Kurt

Thune equipment can do for you!

Form for borrowing SCATT machine systems with computers.

This agreement is between ASRA and _____________________________ (hereafter called CLUB) a shooting club in the Province of Alberta.

By this agreement ASRA (as trustee) is lending at nominal cost ( $1/day as of November 2013), a SCATT laser training system to the CLUB for use in training and demonstrations in their area. The CLUB will pay for the transportation to obtain the unit and it’s return to 2033-74 Street NW Edmonton, AB T6K 2L3 or to the next location wanting to use it.

The CLUB agrees to post a $2000 cheque as guarantee for the safe return of the system. This cheque will be returned to the CLUB or destroyed upon the return of the system in full working order. The CLUB will be responsible for any repairs needed while the machine is in their possession.

It is understood if the system is not returned on request the $2000 cheque will be cashed to enable a new system to be purchased in replacement. If the system is returned, but not fully functional, any repairs will be deducted from the $2000 deposit.

The system will be lent to clubs for a 3 week period that may be formally renewed as deemed fit based on the demand from other locations.

Billi-Jo attended the AFSS AGM in April, 2015

1. The new AFSS President Pat Cooper and Administrative assistant Kyla Clark are

feeling comfortable in their new roles and moving forwards very nicely.

2. Kyla is asking us to post all of our scheduled shoot dates on our site, and to make it

clear to all visitors to the site that we are accepting new members and to post any

informal shoot dates and times for the different clubs. She receives many inquiry phone

calls.

3. We have been asked to make sure that all our casino money is spent this calendar

year, with original receipts to be submitted showing the club and not individuals as the

purchasers of goods.

4. We are reminded that under the government rules, the advertising budget for AFSS

member organizations for casino grant money is carried entirely by AFSS, in other words

we cannot as a club claim advertising as a casino grant expense.

5. We are reminded that the AFSS offers the RSO safety training course and an

instructor course as well, this is a good revenue generator for AFSS and clubs are

encouraged to take advantage of the program.

6. There is a grant surplus of $500 per member organization

a. This money is for us to use as we wish but we must…

i. Make sure it goes to all members

ii. Cover the grant in an email to all our

members

iii. Keep a record of how it was spent

iv. Let AFSS know what we used it for

to include in their report

v. Use it by December 1, 2015

b. The money will be sent to us with the athlete development grant.

7. There is a student grant being offered to two post secondary students who are in the

shooting sports. Grant info can be found on the AFSS website.

8. AFSS are re-writing their policy manuals and are soliciting input from members for

improvements or sections to add.

9. Susan Eymann made a presentation about the Taber Shooting Foundation's new

outdoor range and the work the LA HotShot Target Shooting Club is doing to support

Smallbore shooting in Alberta as well as the opportunity for all shooting disciplines.

10. If there is anything anyone wants to have brought up with AFSS run it through

Susan, Billi-Jo or Wynn who are ASRA delegates for AFSS.

Page 10: Summer 2015 - absbrifle.caabsbrifle.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Summer-newsletter-2015.pdf · Dateline digital edition Summer 2015 Smallbore Rifle ... Wynn Payne 462-1029 hm 2033-74

This was the subsequent action.

The following motion has been approved by the ASRA board of directors.

ASRA donate their $500 received from AFSS grant surplus to support building a covered shooting line to support ISSF smallbore discipline (funds provided directly to Taber Shooting Foundation).

The Taber Shooting Foundation has identified Range #3 (200 meter range) as a range to be used for general purpose shooting as well as having the capability to host SFC Smallbore Nationals, ASRA Provincials and other SFC / ISSF discipline events. The covered shooting line has been designed to accommodate ISSF 50M prone and 3 position matches, Canadian Sporting Rifle, Hunter Rifle and 100 M prone rifle disciplines.

For more information go to http://www.tabershootingfoundation.com/ or see attached power point presentation which was presented at the AFSS AGM this past spring.

Alberta at the nationals Alberta had the largest representation (10) at the national rifle matches in quite some time. We represented ourselves very well. Congratulations to all who ventured to Beachburg.

Sporting Rifle Derek Budd was the overall prone winner as well as being 2nd in the grand agg and 3rd in the 3p. Derek also was 4th in the hunting rifle. Jeff MacDonald was 4th in the prone expert class. Susan Eymann was 5th in the prone expert class; 2nd in the ladies prone as well as the 2nd in the open 3P. She placed 3rd in the Open grand agg and 2nd in the Ladies Grand Agg. Jorja Budd was 3rd junior and 10th expert prone. 5th open 3p; 3rd ladies 3p; 3rd ladies grand agg The Alberta sporter rifle prone team of Susan, Jeff and Derek placed 2nd and the 3P team of Susan, Derek with Barry Nieuwenhuis from Ontario placed 2nd.

Air rifle Michael Erikson placed 7th expert and 10th junior Daniel Sirbu was 4th in ladies air rifle and 7th in the final. Belle Medicraft was 2nd in expert class, 3rd ladies and junior plus attaining 5th in final

ISSF men’s prone Derek Budd’s name again shows up with a 7th place in the match total and 5th in the finals. Wynn Payne was 8th in the matches and 4th in final Sheldon Dobish placed 9th in the matches Jeff Hunter placed 12th in the matches Jeff MacDonald was the first marksman.

If I missed someone or an award I apologize, it is not intentional. Trying to keep the record straight was a challenge.

SFC Rifle National Coach Marcus Raab has agreed to come to Alberta to facilitate a combined athlete and coaches clinic. In order to make full use of Marcus attendance this clinic will be limited to HP athletes and coaches.

Note: Other clinics are planned for all athletes and coaches in 2016, including NCCP Coach training.

The date for this clinic is set for October 22-24 at the CRPC indoor range. It is unfortunate that this clinic is in conflict with the Prairie Open in Winnipeg. It was the only weekend Marcus and I had available in 2015.

The schedule is: Thursday October 22: ISSF .22 Prone and 3 Position Rifle Friday October 23 and Saturday October 24: ISSF Air Rifle

Pan Am games

The Toronto area hosted the 2015 Pan Am and Para games.

The shooting venue was located just south of Barrie in Inisfil about 1 ½ hours north of Toronto.

The range was a brand new facility and looks very nice. Lynda Kiejko won two gold medals in air pistol and sport pistol which gives Canada a quota spot at the Olympics. Amanda Chudoba won the Ladies trap shooting which also gives Canada one more quota spot. In the men’s side of the draw Michel Dion won bronze in men’s prone. Gale Stewart also made the final as did Greg Sych in the men’s 3P.

An interesting aspect to this is that both gold medal athletes are from Alberta.

Without getting into details the range was not built to accommodate centre fire pistol so is not open to the public. There is work being done at the administration level to try to obtain the funding to properly complete the range to allow centre fire pistol and therefore open it to the public. This would also allow the pistol nationals to be held there. It appears the national .22 matches can be held on the range as it now exists.

Here’s a link to many Pan Am games pictures. I will leave this link up until Sept 15th.

2015 Solstice Match

The inaugural Solstice 50M Match was a complete success!!!! Thank you Stan, Karl, Bernie, Gail, Dave, Lucille, Janet, Veronika, Jeff, Susan and everyone else who helped set-up, take-down, cheer, compete, officiate, and just be spectacular!!! We had competitors from Alberta and Saskatchewan Target Shooting Association In June, the inaugural Solstice 50M ISSF target shooting match was hosted at the Lethbridge Fish and Game - LFGA Shooting Sports Facility. Alberta Handgun Association (AHA) ran the event with their portable Megalink Electronic Target System. Both AHA and Alberta Smallbore Rifle Association (ASRA) provided world class officials. The event was incredible, from the fantastic weather, great media coverage, and the top caliber officials and athletes. Thank you everyone for attending and we hope to see you again next year -- plans have already begun to make it bigger and better! Congratulations to our gold medal winners Stan Wills (x2), Aerial Arthur, and Jeff Hunter who won the prone event over Peter Scantlebury by .1 One of the highlights was witnessing 50M pistol shooters shoot 10.9s!!!! Susan Eymann Hello all: Attached to this newsletter are the results for the Alberta Solstice Match held 20-21 June 2015 in Lethbridge on Alberta Handgun Assn.'s Megalink targets. This was a cut score match. If you need any further information from me please let me know as soon as possible. I attended as rifle official and did equipment check and chief range officer as per ISSF rules. We had one prone shooter who had to shoot in blue jeans as he had no other attire with him and he doesn't shoot very often. He had driven 2-1/2 hours to compete and I wasn't going to prevent him from competing when we have so few shooters in this province. We had ideal conditions, it was warm and dry and not too windy. The Lethbridge range was adequate for this competition. There are 15 Megalink targets but with 10 shooters on the line, and the baffle posts, there wasn't room for more shooters on this range. A thunderstorm approached as we were firing the last shot of prone finals Sunday, so everybody worked quickly and efficiently to tear down the electronic targets before the lightning could potentially damage the targets. Regards Janet Trace
