“Summer of Memories”

FEBRUARY 2014

Christian youth camps (waihola) INC

With the summer camps over we are left with a summer filled with good memories. Over the holidays

young people got the opportunity to hear the life saving message of the gospel while having the time of

their lives on our action packed outreach camps.

Despite the poor weather over summer, our summer camps were still a testament to God’s amazing goodness to our ministry here at CYC Waihola.

Many hours of effort were put in by our volunteer directors, cooks, speakers and of course the cabin

leadership all of which contributed to a wonderful time of evangelism and fun.

Six camps were held over the summer holidays, the usual Boys and Girls Summer Camps, Tramping Camp, Motorbike Camp, Horse Trek and Adventure Camp. Although the enrollment numbers were lower than

usual the camps were filled with fun, laughter, great times, thought-provoking talks and discussions. Videos and photos from the summer camps can be found on

our website and Facebook pages.

Motorbike Camp

CAMPING BLURBTim directed the Tramping Camp that was held just before Christmas which had 4 leaders and 5 campers tramp the South Coast Track near Tuatapere. Whilst not a challenging tramp (there was a bit of mud but very little up hill travel) it was several of the campers first tramping trip so was a challenge for them that they overcame well. We had great weather and amazing fellowship in the huts at night. The highlight for many was the jetboat ride out along the Waihaurarihi River for 90 minutes to Lake Hauroko. Tim presented 4 Christian apologetic talks to the campers about the logical and overwhelming scientific evidence for their being a God and for the resurrection of Jesus. These talks were well received and generated some good discussions at times.

The Girls Horse Trek was directed by Lisa Bullin with Joanne organising the treks each day. In the 20ish years that this camp has been running they experienced their first ‘Rain Day’, where riding was replaced with super fun indoor games. The week was filled with great laughter, great friendships and days trekking through the ‘back country’. Raylee Bradfield presented very engaging talks on lessons we can learn from Esther.

The Boys Summer Camp was a Super Hero themed camp with lots of activities matched around the theme. The boys learnt about the Old Testiment Superhero called David who slayed giants and lions and became a great king and man of God. The boys had a great time on the usual CYC activities of go carting, flying foxing, archery and air rifle shooting – they even managed in amongst the rain to do some kayaking.

With over ten enrollments at the last minute the Girls Summer Camp was very thankful for their 24 girls. Jan Jopson had the girls traveling all over the world to places like Antarctica, Egypt, Brazil, the Pacific and Mt Everest on the ‘The Jesus Expedition’. Despite the weather the explorers had an action packed program where they got to experience all the CYC activities, make crafts, create cabin songs, play fear factor and heaps more. Through dramas and discovery time they learnt all about the miracles of Jesus and how we can undertake our own Jesus expedition through our own lives.

The Boys Motorbike Camp was three jammed packed days of motorbike riding and sweet times hanging out together. The leadership and role modelling at this camp was outstanding. The leaders got alongside the boys and shared both their passion for all things motorbiking as well as their love and passion for following Jesus. Caleb Gray presented some good talks about his walk with God and how being in a relationship with Jesus doesn’t make guys less “manly”.

Bikes on Adventure Camp

The Adventure Camp was a camp that Tim was was very envious he was not attending as a leader. The campers were taken on an overnight camp-out/tramp at Alf Bradfield’s, paint-ball shooting, really big water sliding, tobogganing, swimming at various swimming pools, quad biking in the Catlin’s, Hunting along the Clutha River, mountain biking in Dunedin, a messy food challenge, clay bird shooting, horse riding plus lots lots more. Alf Bradfield presented talks to the campers based on Jesus’ parables which were well received and generated some good discussions in the cabins at night.

General NewsWe have just farewelled Grant and Joanne with a wonderful night of fellowship and memories of their time here at CYC Waihola – thank-you to all that came and made the evening a great send-off. Although they have moved to Auckland to oversea the construction and running of a new Christian camp at Maretai, they do plan to be back regularly to remain involved in ministry camps and to ensure a smooth

transition for Tim Wiel and Amy Bullin who are the permanent staff on site now.

Amy has hit the ground running and is currently sampling all the daily tasks and jobs that are to be done here at our camp. She is also overseeing new promotional materials for the camp being put together. Keep your eyes open for this over the next small while on our website and Facebook pages.

The next few months see us accommodating a great number of outside groups – schools, churches and retreats – at our facility, these groups will keep us very busy. As well as this there are meetings to be had, summer camp follow-ups, next holidays camp planning plus much more to do.

Please come to our February Work Day, there is plenty for all to do. Meet at 9.00am at the Homestead, shared lunch at 12.30 (bring a plate), devotion at 1.00 to 1.15, then conclude with smoko at 4.00pm.

Also if you are free for an afternoon and would like something to do then please call in and we can give you an odd job such as weed-eating, spraying, fencing, cleaning, digging, pruning, gardening, spider-web clearing, office support work and the list goes on. It is the collaborative effort put in by our volunteers both at camps and around the campsite behind the scenes that makes our camp-site what it is.

Many thanks for your continued support of our ministry.
