    Hello St. Paul Family,

I'm excited that next month the Hun-ger Leaders' Gathering - a nationalELCA event - will take place in DesMoines at St. John's Lutheran July 11-14! I'm excited about it because I see

this as a great opportunity for us inIowa to host the larger church and toshowcase some of our state treasuresin the area of food production.

Jessica Fairfax and Mikka McCrackenfrom ELCA Hunger have asked forsome local help with the gathering. There are a number of opportunities tohelp with this event, from registrationto set-up to take-down, and tasks inbetween. The synod's Hunger Teamand it's Church in Society Commissionare also involved in helping and finding

help. I see this as an opportunity foryou to meet others who are interestedin faith and food and to learn abouthow we can respond to Jesus' commandto "feed my sheep".

Thanks for considering this request. Ifyou are interested and available toserve in a shift or two, please contactme via email or phone. Thank you foryour prayerful consideration!

    Peace, Joel

I once attended a workshop sponsoredby the Episcopal Diocese of Utah dur-

ing which the leader asked the 200 or

so people gathered if they viewed the

    word evangelism positively. Maybe

one brave soul raised a hand. Then the

facilitator asked the same crowd how

many of them came to the Episcopal

Church later in life, i.e., are not

    cradle Episcopalians. Pretty much the

whole room raised their hands. Thetake-away lesson for me: mainlineChristians are allergic to evangelism

however much they must have been

evangelized at one time or another, or

    else they wouldnt be Christians!

Im a cradle Lutheran who has been

reflecting on why I stayed in the Lu-

theran Church as an adult. My best

reason: because I believe that the

unknowable God has become known inJesus, and what is known is that God is

full of grace. And that makes a huge

difference to me in the world of ten-

thousand things as Lao-Tzu called it.

Under every decaying leaf in my yard,

    or shimmering red cardinal perched

outside my office window, or even amid

every tragedy I see in the hospital con-

sultation room, I know that the God of

infinite, unconditional grace and self-giving love is there. Weeping with those

who weep, rejoicing with those who

rejoice. This is the God who, as Julian

of Norwich put it, will make all things

well, even if at any given moment all

evidence runs to the contrary. The tomb

is still empty. And that gives me hope.

Thats a wordy reason why I have

faith. What is yours? And what differ-ence does it make to you? And what

difference would it make to someone

else? Who in your life needs to hear it?

How you answer those questions is your

    own individual evangelism program.

    Evangelist Billy Graham anecdotally

once said, Of all Christians, Lutherans

have the deepest grasp of the gospel.

The only problem is, they dont want to

tell anybody. As much as I like Billy,we need to prove him wrong. And I

know we can and do. Lets not tire of

sharing the gospel. After all, God does

not tire of us, and thats really good

    news!

    Christs Peace,

    Pr. Joel

    Fellowship& Hospitality

Quilt Raffle Tickets for SaleThe quilt now hanging in the fellowship hall was originally pieced by

Ilene Kagarice. Based on when she started assembling the blocks,

she estimated that some of the fabrics were from the

1930s and 40s and up. The quilting was done byPeggy Freligh, who bound and trimmed it in black

and white to showcase the colorful array of fabrics.

Ilene and her family were very happy with the finished

quilt, and shortly thereafter (in February), Ilene passed

away. Raffle tickets for this quilt are available for

$1each or 6 for $5. The winner will be drawn in Au-

gust at the Table Affair Dinner. Talk to any of the

    quilters about purchasing tickets.

It's going to be called, "Table Affair/Family Affair." Allthemes will deal with the family. What you did as a child growing up or what you do with your family now. We have somereally fun themes so far such as "Family Vacation", "Family Camping" , "Family Pets", "Building A Snowman", "Ice Skat-ing", "Fourth of July Party" "Family Game Night" "Friday Night Football" "All Things Wild" just to name a few. I havea good start with ten hostesses. All I need is five more. If there are some of you that are thinking about being a part of thisevent just give me a call. We need you! I have some neat things planned so you won't want to miss this one. It will be anevening to remember!

Ticket sales are going well. As you all know we are selling tickets on a beautiful quilt. It's hanging in the fellowship hall forall to see. A lot of work and love has gone into this quilt so take a look and don't miss your chance of winning this quilt. Wewill also be giving away a $500 gift card from Best Buy. What is the SPRC?The mission of the Staff-Parish Relations Com-mittee is to serve both the congregation andthe church staff by listening to the concerns orneeds of the congregation and providing sup-port to the Pastor and staff.

The Committee serves as both "blanket" and"sandpaper" to the staff. This means that theSPRC provides the care and comfort of a blan-ket, as well as the gift of difficult feedback to"sand" off any rough edges. Committee meet-ings offer time for open dialogue, problem-

    solving and reflection.

This year's committee consists ofAnnBartelt, chair;Jason Darling, Karen Meyer, and Lorrie Drake, with an additional memberto be named by the Church Council. Meetingsare held every four to six weeks throughoutthe year. The congregation is urged to contactany member of the committee at any time.

Wehope to continue to offer opportunities to helpnurture the physical and spiritual wellness of StPaul's members.

ELW HymnalsMr. Dean Bartelt and an anonymous donor have generously offered a combined$1000 designated toward the purchase of the new red hymnal, the EvangelicalLutheran Worship book. The council considered their offer and decided toproceed with purchasing 50 copies. If you would like to adopt a hymnal andmemorialize or honor a loved one, please sign up on the kiosk. The cost is $20per book, made payable to St. Paul, and funds from these donations will be usedto purchase additional copies. Altogether, we hope to purchase 60+ copies. This new book contains hymns and liturgies that are familiar to us, as well as awealth of new service music and hymns. We are excited about this new oppor-tunity and very grateful for the donations!

Easter Baskets Benefit 78 ChildrenThank you to everyone who helped with the Easter baskets by making them or do-nating items for the baskets. A special thank you to the trust fund for donatingmoney to purchase items for the baskets. A total of 78 baskets were made. The bas-kets were delivered to the following places: Hope Ministries Homeless FamiliesShelter, Freedom for Youth to satellite programs in Stuart and Mitchellville, andteen parents and local families in Winterset.

Some really great things came out of this project . . . besides 78 kids receiving bas-kets that reminded them of God's love for them:

    1. Our congregation received an open invitation from Hope Ministries to visit andserve a meal at their shelter for homeless families.

    2. More connections were made with Freedom for Youth. Many of the basketsthat went to Mitchellville were given to children of the women prisoners.

    3. The Stuart Freedom for Youth leaders said that they had prayed for membersgoing to Africa and asked us to continue to pray for Blessman Ministries and thepeople who travel to Africa to help.

    4. Julie formed a partnership with her cousin Jenny and Alabaster Ministries inWinterset helped deliver the baskets this year and may help next year.

A special thanks to God Squad for always working on this project so enthusiastically!

Disaster Response TeamI am looking to form a Disaster Response Team at St. Paul, and I am seeking oth-ers who may be interested in helping me get it organized. This team would func-tion as a central point of information and action when a St. Paul family is in need ofserious help - ie: after a house fire, tornado damage, flooding, etc. There tends tobe a lot of confusion and miscommunication when these types of events occur, and it would be very beneficial to have a team here at St. Paul prepared to offerassistance coordinating help for the family. Please contact me at 468-5263 [email protected] if you are interested. Once I get a group of interested indi-viduals we will plan an initial meeting. Thank you for your consideration!
