A rainy Friday and overcast Saturday didn’t dampen the spirits of more than 700 athletes and 85 Unified Partners who competed at the 2013 Special Olympics Delaware Summer Games presented by DuPont.
Many thanks go to all our family members and athletes, as well as to the countless individuals who gave their assistance in helping us prepare for the venue changes. Our deepest thanks also go to everyone involved with the Summer Games committee, as well as members of the Delaware Air National Guard, many of whom worked tirelessly around the clock and brought friends or family members to work with them throughout the weekend. It is because of this awe-inspiring dedication and devotion to Special Olympics Delaware that we are exceptionally grateful for what everyone does to assure the success of Summer Games for our athletes. Shift in Healthy Athletes coming in 2014This June marked the 13th consecutive Special Olympics Delaware Summer Games that offered at least two components of the Healthy Athletes Program. During those 13 years, components were also offered at some point during each of the organization’s other major events.
In February 2014, SODE plans to host the organization’s first stand-alone Medfest, which will include the four major components — Special Smiles, Opening Eyes, Healthy Hearing, Fit Feet — along with fun and educational activities and sessions for athletes, caregivers and other family members.
The exact date and location is yet to be determined, but we are looking at a Sunday afternoon in late February when it’s still too chilly to want to be outside and families are often looking for “things to do!” The plan is to conduct this inaugural Medfest in New Castle County and then in 2015 schedule one in Kent/Sussex County, and then alternate upstate and downstate moving forward.
The reason for the change is twofold. First, when polling several parents they all agreed it is very difficult to squeeze Healthy Athletes into an already busy competition schedule when it’s offered at existing events. The majority felt a stand-alone event would be better received and attended. Secondly, it enables us to expand the number of medical personnel we reach in each discipline by offering Healthy Athletes on a better day (Sunday) and during a better time of year (winter). In addition, by expanding downstate we will reach a new audience of medical personnel who will have the benefit of learning that our athletes are no different than their patients when it comes to nervousness, etc., when visiting a doctor.
Our hope is that by making this change, Healthy Athletes can reach significantly many more people than the roughly 200 athletes it did during previous Summer Games, and typically less than 100 when offered at other competitions such as Fall Festival and the State Basketball Tournament.
But this change is more than just a numbers game – it’s an opportunity to expand what Healthy Athletes offers, providing valuable information, and in some cases, hands-on experience, for a healthier lifestyle for not just the athletes, but their caregivers and family members.
And it’s going to be done in a fun — music and dancing! — and festive atmosphere. It’s an exciting change! And we look forward to our families supporting and embracing it.

Summer workout hints:
Summer is here and with it the heat and humidity that never seems to go away. Just like many often get the winter blahs, it’s just as easy to get the summer blahs and come up with excuse after excuse not to exercise.
We also tend to eat more during the summer as picnics, baseball games and other outdoor activities provide an endless supply of your favorite, and often fattening summertime foods. Whether it is hotdogs, burgers or watermelon, think about the last time you were at a picnic,
you probably ate more than you would during a normal dinner at home.
So how do you avoid that “winter weight gain” during the summer months?
1. Eat right. You’ve heard it before, but it’s true. If you watch what you eat you’re more likely to not gain weight. When you walk through the buffet line at your next picnic, take one helping of the meat being served, two or three normal-sized sides and one dessert. And then throw your plate away!
2. Drink right. Drinking water is the best liquid for your body, but the reality is not everyone likes water, or at least a lot of it. Sports drinks often contain a lot of sugar as do sweetened iced teas or lem-onades. So be sure to avoid them and if you aren’t going to drink water, try sugar-free drinks of some sort. Many contain other questionable ingredients (aspartame) but they won’t give you the calories those other sugary drinks do. And be sure to limit your alcohol intake. Heat, sun and alcohol are not a good mix to begin with, let alone for your waistline.
3. Work out. The last thing you probably feel like doing after dinner is heading outside into the heat. But it is the best time to be outside because even if the sun is still out, it’s not as strong as it is during the day. You don’t have to run a 5K to get a decent workout in. Take a short (or long) walk or bike ride. Shoot hoops in the driveway or play a game of whiffle ball or kickball. Make any of these a family activity and before you know it, you’ll be spending quality time together and having fun … all while exercising.
4. Limit the ice cream. Whether you are at the beach or in your neighborhood, there’s nothing better than a cold ice cream cone on a hot sum-mer night. But treating yourself to ice cream too often can be costly – to your wallet and your waistline. Try to make the trip to the local ice cream shop or waving down of the ice cream truck a once-a-week tradition. That way it’s something you can still look forward to and enjoy, but something you’ll keep under control.
These helpful hints might not make you lose weight during the summer months, but they’ll certainly help you keep from gaining a lot of it.
EAT THIS ... NOT THAT
Memorial Day and Fourth of July might be over, but my guess is your opportunities to attend picnics are not. The next time you are trying to decide what to eat at the family barbecue, keep these tips in mind: (Source: “Eat This Not That,” by David Zinczenko with Matt Gouding)
1. Calorie- and fat-wise, hotdogs are better than hamburgers. A hotdog has 320 calories and 18 grams of fat versus a hamburger’s 462 calories and 21.5 grams of fat (and that’s before making it a cheeseburger).
2. Choose baked beans before potato salad. One-half cup of canned baked beans is 120 calories and 1 gram of fat. The same size serving of homemade potato salad packs 190 calories and 12 grams of fat.
3. And finally, if you leave room for dessert, an ice pop contains no fat and just 50 calories compared to a generic chocolate ice cream bar that has 280 calories and 20 grams of fat (with premium bars like Dove packing even more calories and fat).
