The work of Naeem

Khan just gets better

and better. No wonder

there were audible

gasps from the audi-

ence at this year's edi-

tion of Celebrating Cou-

ture. The clothes Khan

designs and produces

are over-the-top beautiful. So much so,

viewers can hardly believe what they

see.

Garments modeled in the Globe Guil-

ders most recent show elevated Khan's

already high concept and execution to

extraordinary levels of artistry.

Khan's meteoric rise in the fashion in-

dustry is no accident. His dresses and

gowns are so impeccably cut and ar-

rayed with decorative embellishments

they are worthy of museum inclusion.

The em-

broidery

this year,

particular-

ly dramatic

in black

and white,

was lavish.

Crystal

beading

made stars

of the run-

way mod-

els. After

all, Khan's

Celebrating Couture with Pizazz designs have popped up in scenes of Sex &

the City and Dreamgirls films. First Lady

Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and

Queen Noor of Jordan wear clothes by

Khan. Why wouldn't they? Khan delivers

drop dead glamour coupled with high soci-

ety elegance. The brilliant couturier was

inspired this time by textiles, decorative

arts, and garments of both the Byzantine

Empire and the 1920 art deco styles. They

are improbable combinations, but stunning

in mix.

The always trendy guests at the Guilders

show included Karen Cohn, Sheryl White,

Joan Jacobs, Pat Whalen, Iris Strauss and

Elaine Darwin, an Old Globe Board mem-

ber and this year's Celebrating Couture

Honorary Chair. Some other fashionistas

spotted in the large crowd were Jeanne

Jones, Lynne Wheeler, Valerie Cooper, Liz

Helming, Fashion Show Chair, Marlene

Sterling, Fashion Show Co-Chair, Linda Van

Vark, Globe Guilder President, Jo Ann Kilty,

Esther Rodriguez, Gail Dill, Phyllis Parrish,

and Cristull Hasson. All of the event patrons

looked smashing. Pictures start on Page 4.

Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel was the

venue for the show and the always solid

Neiman Marcus produced Khan's Couture

Line runway presentation, which had emo-

tional punch. The result was electrifying.

Every women in the room wished to look

like the models on the catwalk.

Since the show benefits Globe Theatre pro-

grams, the day's theatricality was perfect.

There was so much pizazz.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE - EDUCATION

This year’s Globe Honors and The Road

to the Jimmy™ Awards was an inspiring

evening of performances by talented

local teens. Well over 100 students audi-

tioned for the coveted opportunity to

perform at the Globe with the possibility

of winning a scholarship and other great

prizes. The multi-step process of select-

ing the finalists began early in May

when each young hopeful either sang a

song from a musical or performed a

monologue

from a play

before our pan-

el of judges

and, from that

large group, 24

semi-finalists

were selected.

On May 19 the

semi-finalists

again audi-

tioned for a

second set of judges and the finalists

were selected but they all had to wait

until the next night to be told who the

lucky finalists would be.

On the evening of Monday, May 20, all

24 students performed three big num-

bers they had rehearsed with director

James Vasquez. They were fantastic!

And then the finalists were announced.

Families and friends cheered to hear

the names and among those amazing

finalists was Mae Powell, the Globe’s

youngest Guilder! Her dreamy voice

filled the Theatre as she sang her solo

for the judges and the audience and

she deserved those cheers and ap-

plause for her beautiful performance.

Hunter Schwarz of Canyon Crest Acad-

emy and Annika Gullahorn of Pacific

Ridge School won in the categories of

Leading Actor and Actress in a High

School Musical, respectively, and will

receive an all-expenses-paid trip to

New York City to participate in the Na-

tional High School Musical Theater

Awards/The Jimmy™ Awards competi-

tion. The other winners of this year’s

Globe Honors were Samuel Brogadir of

San Diego School of Creative and Per-

forming Arts and Alexis Young of Escon-

dido Charter High School in the catego-

ry of Outstanding Achievement in Musi-

cal Theatre, Mitchell Connelly and Sa-

mantha Littleford, both of Coronado

School of the Arts in the category of Out-

standing Achievement in Spoken Thea-

tre and Alexandra Adams of San Diego

School of Creative and Performing Arts

in the category of Outstanding Achieve-

ment in Technical Theatre.

The hugely successful Summer Luncheon hosted over 90 attendees at the beautiful Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island. They were very gracious to us. The Luncheon was Chaired by Wendy Ledford and Co-Chaired by Rita David with Gigi Cramer overseeing all the plans as VP Social. Everyone was warmly greeted by President Linda Van Vark. Artistic Director Barry Edelstein gave us an overview of 2013 - 2014 Season. Our “Second Hand Rose” boutique proved to be very popular and profitable. The event net-ted over $2,700 for the Guilders. A very popular meet and greet produc-

tion of Double Indemnity was well at-

tended on Monday, July 1st.

Five cast members and a supporting

"cast" of around 50 loved our bountiful

spread. Alexa Hirsch designed the

tables in a black drape, with guns,

badges and handcuffs amongst the lav-

ish spread with the appropriate film

noir theme.

Four ladies did the ever popular dev-

iled eggs: Dolores Lane, Barbara Bolt,

Marilyn Johns, and Nadine Masters,

each with a different twist. Several cast

members, along, with our wonderful

crackers/cheese/salami; miniature choc-

olate chip muffins, banana bread and a

dazzling cake. All these additions were

brought by Dolores Smith, Pat Johnston,

Pam Stafford, Sally Crahan, Donna

We all had a wonderful lunch after the

cast went to rehearsal. What a

grand Guilder experience this was.

Original chicken salad, BLT's and

ham and cheese on rye disappeared

quickly created by Fran Viertel, Sue

McGrath, Patricia Paul, Sally Berry and

daughter Lisa Berry Shaw.

Refreshing fruit platters and mounds of

cherries, plums, apricots, oranges were

brought by Pat and Norm Gillespie, Rita

Venturini and Shirley Kosiek. Most

were quickly consumed or put in their

pockets for later in the rehearsal day, or

put into the Green Room for a wander-

ing soul.
