Labor Day Catfish Festival in KingslandThe 31st Annual Labor Day Catfish Festival will be held in downtown Kingsland August 31-

September 2. The festival will kick off Saturday at 7am with a 5K run sponsored by the CamdenMiracle League (www.camdenmiracleleague.com). More than 75 booths featuring handmadeoriginal arts & crafts, antiques, and collectibles will be open Saturday and Sunday from 12-6pmand Monday from 9am-6pm. There will also be an antique classic car, truck, and tractor exhibition by the Southeast Georgia Car andTruck Club.Free outdoor performances on Saturday

through Monday will feature many bands andentertainers. Visitors are encouraged to take lawnchairs and beach blankets. Reserved seating forthe elderly and disabled will be available.The weekend menu will include succulent

Southern Fried Catfish or Catfish Nuggets, gritsor fries, coleslaw, hushpuppies, and iced tea.Serving time will begin at 12pm each day. A variety of other festival foods will be available;and the Kingsland Lions Club will serve a pancake breakfast on Labor Day.The Labor Day parade at 10am will feature Kingsley the Lion, Cecil the Catfish, and the

Camden County High School Marching Band. The amusement area, open from Saturday noonthrough Monday evening, will feature pony rides, kiddie train, inflatables, bungee jump, and otherattractions. For information, call 912-729-2409 or visit www.kingslandcatfishfestival.com.

Heritage Sandy Springs will present Concerts by the Springs one Sunday evening eachmonth through September. The concerts, which are free and open to the public, will be held from

METRO ATLANTASoutheastern Railway Museum in Duluth

“Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has an extensive collection of railwayrolling stock from the last two centuries, including vintage steam and diesel locomotives, pas-senger and private cars, a WWII troop kitchen, arailway post office car, freight cars, and cabooses.Pride of place goes to Superb, a private car usedby Presidents Harding and Wilson for official travel.The museum is also home to historic buses

from MARTA and its predecessor systems, as wellas steam tractors, vintage cabs and firefightingequipment. A restored 1871 passenger depotmarks the museum entrance.The annual Locomotive Celebration on June

8-9 will include temporary caboose tattoos, loco-motive hunt, refreshments, and a kids’ craft corner.Trains, Trucks, and Tractors on August 3-4 will offer refreshments, temporary tattoos, craft cornerfor children, hayrides, and exhibits of tractors, trucks and other vehicles, both old and new. The coolest way to escape the heat this summer will be at the 6th Annual Summer Splash atthe Chattahoochee River on Satur -day, July 27. Guests are invited tobring their kayak, canoe, or raft, orrent one from the local outfitters. Thesix mile float lasts about three hours,depending upon the river’s currentand amount of paddling.The Chattahoochee River

National Recreation Area and SandySprings Hospitality & Tourism hostthis signature event each year, andthis year they have teamed up withCooper Global Transportation andthe City of Sandy Springs. Make sure

you register early for the event to ensure your spot on the river.After the float there will be music, food, and fun waiting for everyone to enjoy at Powers Island.

Parking for Summer Splash is at Powers Island, and a shuttle will transport participants to MorganFalls to begin the float. Register for the Summer Splash by calling the Chattahoochee RiverNational Recreation Area (CRNRA) at 678 538-1200 or visiting on the website atwww.nps.gov/chat.

Watermelon Days Festival in CordeleVisit the Cordele-Crisp County area June 1-30 for the 64th Annual Watermelon Days

Peach Blossom TrailPeaches are one of the most popular fruits in the United States and have always been

symbolic of something good as indicated by the saying “pretty as a peach.” The State of Georgiais indeed fortunate to be so well known for such awonderful commodity (although anyone who hasever been whipped by a Georgia peach twig maynot think so.) Georgia was named the Peach Statebecause it was the birthplace of the commercialpeach industry.When traveling in Georgia from mid-May

through August, the Peach Blossom Trail offers several roadside stands where visitors can findsweet Georgia peaches. During their travels downthe trail, they can see thousands of acres of peach

orchards. There are several farms that offer tours into the orchards, providing a close look at thepeach trees and information on the history of how this fruit from China made its way to Georgia.The Peach Blossom Trail runs parallel to I-75. Get off the beaten path, and travel the Trail.

Perspectives 2013: 11th Annual Georgia Pottery InvitationalThe Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation will host Perspectives 2013: 11th Annual Georgia

Pottery Invitational from August 31-September 18 at OCAF at 34 School St., Watkinsville. Over5,000 pieces of functional handmade pottery will beoffered for sale from 50 of Georgia’s finest potters. Big Haynes Creek Wildlife Festival in ConyersThe 7th Annual Big Haynes Creek Wildlife Festival on August 24-25 will delight the entire

poetry; he became the voice and the soul of a region known as Appalachia. The Byron HerbertReece Farm consists of the remaining 9.3 acres of the Reecefamily property and is dedicated to enhancing his writingsand his way of life with emphasis on his love of nature and hisattachment to farming.The Center includes a welcome center with a gift shop

and museum; a Poetry Trail that highlights Reece poemsinscribed on stone boulders; Mulberry Hall, the poet’s writingstudio; and five barn buildings housing 13 exhibits which fea-ture home and farm artifacts, implements, and enterprisesthat portray life in Appalachia during the first half of the 20thcentury. The Real Squeal: Lyons Barbeque & Music FestivalLyons Better Hometown will host its fourth annual barbeque festival, The Real Squeal, in

Lyons October 11-12. The Real Squeal is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event withboth professional and amateur barbeque competitions. Theamateur contest will kick off the festival on Friday, October 11, indowntown Lyons with a street dance, great barbeque, tradition-al festival food, a classic car cruise-in, and fireworks.On Saturday, October 12, head to Partin Park for the profes-
