Beginning the 7th summer of motivating students to read, reducing summer slide, and putting books into the hands of our students

Keep Seminole County Public School students reading over the summer break! Students who do not read in the summer can lose months of
reading development Those who continue to read gain reading proficiency
2013 GoalsRead Every Day and log minutes! Participate in the 10 Million Minute SCPS
Summer read for the world record challenge!
The Bookmobile will visit 12 weekly stops Monday–Thursday from June 10th – August 1st
(Except Thursday, July 4th)
Seminole County Public School students read!
Students use reading logs to record their reading
Reading logs are brought to the 2013-14 attendance school and entered into school drawings on two“Let’s Read, Seminole days” August 19th and September 16th
School winners are entered into a district-wide grand prize drawing Winners from the district drawing will be presented prizes at a
School Board meeting
Use Let’s Read “video” to promote enthusiasm
Distribute book logs and bookmarks
Show students how to access the Let’s Read, Seminole website and utilize various features
Include information on morning news shows, at PTA functions, and/or in newsletters
Remind students they have access to digital eBooks!
Students can visit the Seminole County Public School library Overdrive site at http://seminole.lib.overdrive.com
or the Public library at http://semcofl.lib.overdrive.com
Use a student ID or public library card to “Borrow” eBooks Read online or Download! Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending
period

Each reading log gives students a chance to be selected for a prize Prizes are not based on the total number of books read
School drawings will take place on Let’s Read, Seminole days, August 19th & September 16th Winners names must be submitted to the district by September 20th
to be eligible for the grand prize drawing
Grand Prize winners will be selected at the district level and receive prizes at the October School Board meeting
Invite students to participate in the Scholastic Summer Challenge
• The Summer Challenge invites kids to join their school team to log their reading minutes online as they Read for the World Record
• In 2012, more than 193,000 kids representing all 50 states and 32 countries read and logged an impressive 95,859,491 minutes
• The Top 20 Schools that read and logged the most minutes are listed in the 2013 Scholastic Book of World Records• Including Walker Elementary School - Seminole: 371,830
