This is not my usual letter, where I tell you about all the great things inside this issue (however there

are many!). This letter is my thank you to all the wonderful friends, family and readers who reached out to me with kind words, donations and wonderful advice during one of the more difficult times in my life - the news that time with my

amazing and beautiful dog Harvey was about to be seriously cut short. I am incredibly grateful for all the support I have recieved. I did not realize how much it was going to help me on an emotional level. Every message, card and kind word brought tears to my eyes but also made me feel a little less alone. I’m so sad to share that Harvey lost his battle with cancer and passed away in June. Harvey’s death was actually a shock to me. He was still running at the farm, eating like a little piggy and always up for a walk in our neighborhood, all throughout his chemotherapy. Unfortunately it became clear that he had a very aggressive form of Lymphoma. We would knock it back and shrink the tumor for a few weeks, it would grow and we would knock it back again. Four days before he passed away, we headed up to N.E. Veterinary Oncology Group for his usual treatment. Things were looking up because he had not been coughing for three solid weeks (a sure sign that his tumor had not grown back). However, when the vet came in with the standard pre-treatment blood work, she had a look on her face that said - something was very wrong; it was like being hit with a sledgehammer and I crumbled. The cancer had gone into his blood stream. I did one last, and perhaps desperate round of chemo, but a few days later, Harvey woke up with a bloody nose and after a visit to Ocean State Vet, we knew that we might be close to the end. We went directly from the vet to the beach and spent a wonderful day watching Harvey wade in the water and roll in the sand. He was my happy, active, beautiful boy, right until the end. On his last day, while looking into his big beautiful eyes, Paul, Harvey’s dog dad and I said our last good-byes. Harvey was the most beautiful, kind, and soulful friend I have ever known and his life and death has forever changed me. I am beyond thankful that through treatment, I was able to enjoy four more quality months with him. That time was more valuable than I could have ever imagined and I would do it all over again without hesitation. I want to thank you again for all your support and kindness. Also, thank you to Dr. Abbo and the amazing vet techs, who Harvey adored at NEVOG. Thank you to Ocean State Veterinary Services for your compassion and caring, Final Gift Pet Crematorium for your generosity, and lastly thank you to Dr. Hassinger at Wolf Rock Animal Health Center for Harvey’s life-long care and friendship.

Chinese City Launches Responsible Dog Ownership Course With Animals AsiaIn June, a high-profile public event on “Responsible Dog Ownership” was held by the local authorities in Guangzhou, China, also known as the dog-and cat-eating capital of the world. Organized by the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau (PSB) in partnership with Animals Asia, the event was held at the Tianhe District Huajing Primary School.

Professor Paws, a school-based dog education program designed to show that dogs are friends, not food, was launched in Guangzhou in 2008 having been running in Hong Kong since 2004. Professor Paws shows children how to make friends with dogs and become a responsible dog caregiver.

“Pep, The Cat-Murdering Dog” was a black Labrador Retriever admitted to Eastern State Penitentiary on August 12, 1924. Prison folklore tells us that Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot used his executive powers to sentence Pep to Life Without Parole for killing his wife’s cherished cat. Prison records support this story: Pep’s inmate number (C-2559) is skipped in prison intake logs and inmate records. The Governor told a different story. He said Pep had been sent to Eastern to act as a mascot for the prisoners. He and the Warden, Herbert “Hard-Boiled” Smith, were friends. Pep was much loved, and lived among the inmates at Eastern

State for about a decade. While the truth may never be known, in photographs Pep—with his head down and ears back--looks GUILTY.

Dear Editor,I know AnimalPrint magazine primarily features dogs, but I wanted to let you know about the five Silver Appleyard ducklings we adopted. They are part of a study to repopulate the breed. This endangered breed (only 128 breeding ducks were reported in a 2000 cencus of domestic waterfowl in North America), were bred in NH and have been adopted by families from ME to RI. The Silver Appleyard is a large, sturdy, flightless bird, which weighs between 6-8 pounds. They are extremely happy and playful. If all goes well, I will have ducklings to share next year. Who is Casey and tell us why he’s so special.Casey is a handsome 6 year old Beagle and our Ambassador of Chi canine human interaction. Casey is special to us because we rehabilitated him to be a happy, healthy and balanced dog. Casey is now the Ambassador of Chi Fitness & Training Club, teaching packs how to “coexist” without discrimination.

Why did Casey want to be on the cover?Casey represents Chi canine human interaction in supporting Providence Animal Rescue League.

Our purpose is to help families learn how to build a relationship between human and dog, with trust, respect and loyalty. Casey, was a perfect example of too much love gone “red zone,” sitting on death row. The Human’s perception is that an aggressive dog is an abused dog; that is not always the case with. Casey came from a nice family that wanted a dog for their son to complete the family pack. The family nurtured Casey with much love and unfortunately his behavior turned, becoming territorial, aggressive and not trusting.

Our family adopted Casey and rehabilitated him to trust and respect humans and taught him to coexist with all kinds. Casey is now a teacher, helping dogs to coexist with each other, teach-ing human to follow instincts, “live in the now” and to respect who they are, animal, dog (specie), breed, and name. Casey says, “human must fulfill the dog’s needs first: walk with me every day, exercise my body and mind and I will be loyal to human forever.”

Local Group Raises $11,000 To Benefit Feral Cats Local supporters and volunteers joined Pawswatch at the 3rd annual Spring for Cats Silent Auction, Raffle and Cocktail Party at the Newport Elks Lodge. Over 80 guests helped to bring in $11,000 for the group, which will go directly to providing veterinary care,food & shelter to feral cats in Rhode Island. A silent auction featured more than 120 items up for bid including unique artwork, entertainment, jewelry and specialty gift baskets. Many guests chose to sponsor a feral cat, providing crucial spay/neuter surgeries. “We are delighted to have had such a strong turnout,” said Marcella Bauer, a PawsWatch Director and organizer of the event. “With our six regional chapters around the state, we are bringing in more friends and volunteers than ever before.” Marcella added. “Word is getting out that this is the best alternative for feral population control. Perhaps you’ve lost a pet and the grieving process has been in-credibly difficult. Or maybe you just need tips on how to care for your new pet. You may even need advice on how to adopt

a new buddy. In the new Vet’s N’ Pets Group, attendees can find the advice they need.This Facilitator’s Support Group offers the Veteran an opportunity to share stories, concerns, ask questions and offer helpful advice to other Vet’s about their “best friends”. We’ll talk about how pets help us deal with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. What about adoptions, how are you and your new “best friend” working out together?Although we love thinking about the good times spent with our pets during the short period of time that they’re with us, it’s important to focus on what happens after they’re gone. Healing takes time and can be extremely painful, long lasting and plays havoc with our emotions and well being. As a support group, we’re here to help our Peers go through the grieving process, deal with sickness, a lost pet, misbehaving pet, or any issue one may have. This group session is eight weeks long and is open to Veterans who are being seen at the VA Hospital only. No civilians. Group meets on Mondays between 2:00-3:30pm. MEMBERS ONLYBeginning August 1st, dog owners will be required to have a membership to use the Dexter Training Ground Dog Run. Memberships are free, and to become a member, you will need to show your city issued dog licence. Licenses are $5 for most dogs and $20 for pit bulls.Amidst a flurry of facebook messages expressing confusion and concern, Kari Lang, WBNA Executive Director issued this statement on the Friends of Dexter Dog Park Run facebook page:

“There had been a movement among neighbors

to PERMANENTLY CLOSE the DTG Dog Run

due to excessive dog barking, lack of enforcement

of rules that include dog barking, picking up

dog waste, and having dog licenses among other

things. On March 23 and May 14, the Mayor,

the Parks Superintendent and the Board of

Parks Commissioners held two public meetings

for comment from neighbors. A majority of the

neighbors spoke out to keep the facility open

because they see it as a valuable community asset,

yet most everyone understood the issues at the dog

run and felt it important for users to be neighborly.

The Board of Parks Commissioners heard the

message of the supporters, but also recognized the

problems at the dog run. Parks Superintendent Bob

McMahon asked the Board of Parks Commissioners

the following:

• To not close the dog run, but instead allow the

dog run stay open for 90 days as a trial

• That a new sound barrier be installed

• That rules be posted at the park

• That all users have a dog licenses as per

City Law

To ensure that users adhere to these

requirements, the commissioners approved a

FREE membership system be put in place (which

basically is only proof of having a dog license, and

agreeing to comply by the rules).”

If you’ve ever fostered an animal, you’ve heard the same question: “How do you let them go!?” Even if you haven’t fostered yourself, you may have wondered the same thing.

Well, the answer is quite simple, really. And every foster parent that has fought back tears as they waved good-bye to the pet they nursed back from the brink of death, or helped deliver into this world, or bottle raised can tell you. How can we let them go? Because we have to.

Some of you may know about my recent foster puppy Pinky, or Lady Pinkerton as she is known. Found wondering Providence, Pinks was infested with a type of mange that is considered non-contagious and she was literally fur-less. She was taken to Providence Animal Control, covered with scabs, lesions, and pustules from a massive staph infection, and was in a great deal of pain –we estimate another week without vet care would have been fatal. I brought her home to heal and be loved, and through Handsome Dan’s Rescue, mine became her foster home.

So many friends and family – and new friends who started following her blog (ThePinkyChronicles.WordPress.com) – all asked the same things: “You’re going to keep her, right!?” People were stunned when,

after having her a few months, we let her go. What!? How can you let her go!? How could you love such a helpless creature so completely and so deeply, and let her go? And to complete strangers, no less!?

Yes, I wanted to keep Pinky. No one on this earth will ever know how much I wanted to keep her. But what if I did?

What if I kept my first foster: a pair of kittens that needed bottle-feeding? I loved them dearly, but if I had kept them I wouldn’t have been able to learn a valuable lesson about the importance of foster care: you have to let them go.

What if I kept my next foster: a dog that had been adopted out perfectly fine but who was returned for “clashing with the new couch” along with a VERY bad case of flinching and hand-shyness? If I kept her I couldn’t have fostered a sick puppy who just needed time to recover. If I had kept that puppy, I couldn’t have fostered a very sick, deformed kitten then ended up dying in my hands in the middle of the night rather than alone in a cage. If I had kept any of those, I might not have been able to adopt the dog that changed my life and my career path, or find an apartment in a new state. If I kept my Zepplin, I would never have met his amazing family. I would never have been

able to foster one of the Missiouri 500, who taught me lessons no other dog could have taught me. Or what if I kept Sandwich, or any of the next several puppies that came after? I would never have met Pinky! And if I kept her, she would never have touched the lives of her new family, who can provide her with so much. And there will be another…

So, you see, that’s how I can let them go. That’s how all foster homes let them go. There’s always another one that needs us. Another scared dog to comfort, sick kitten to soothe; a nursing mom to shelter.

My point in writing this isn’t to brag about what I’ve done. I’m not wonderful, or unique, or in any way special. Mine is just one of many, many foster homes all over Rhode Island and all over the country doing the exact same thing. And all those “foster failures” out there – you are incredible people who fell in love and just couldn’t let them go. I get it! I was “this close” myself! A foster home is a foster home, and we need more of you. It’s thankless, expensive, exhausting volunteer work – but man it’s worth every moment.

The point of this article is to invite you to join the foster family ranks. Open your door and allow a cat to adapt to being in a home – perhaps for the first time in her life. Afford the chance for a dog to learn to be a dog again or to learn to trust people after being abused by them. Nurture growing babies by bottle, raising kittens, or provide care and safety for mom and her litter. Train dogs with bad manners or teach the ropes to growing puppies. Or simply provide a second chance for an animal who isn’t doing well at a shelter, or offer a soft place for an injury to heal or illness to pass.

Shelters and rescues all over Rhode Island are looking for foster homes – especially now that spring has turned to summer (aka “kitten season”) and is in full swing. Some foster homes are lucky enough to be reimbursed for their expenses, while many

cover the costs for food, veterinary care, toys, and other supplies themselves. Some fosters last for a few days, others for many months. There are so many options for foster care that, really, any responsible person who knows more than average about pets (or is willing to learn!) can be a foster home. Foster care isn’t for everyone – you have to be willing to let them go.

So, do you think fostering is for you? Contact your local shelter or rescue and ask how you can get involved. Ask to shadow a current foster provider to see what fostering involves. And start laying that brickwork around your heart, because it sure is hard to let them go. And if you can’t, that’s ok too.

No More Chained Dogs!Several sections of the Rhode Island General Law: Relating to Animal Husbandry – Dogs, have been amended, with the passage of a bill introduced by Senators Tassoni, Lynch, Perry, Pinga. What does it mean for RI dogs?1. Dogs may NOT be chained or tethered for more than 10 hours in a single day. Dogs may NOT be penned or fenced for more than 14 hours in a single day. (While this may still seem like a long time to us, this is a huge win for dogs living outside permanently.)2. Dogs may NOT be chained/tethered on a choke or pong collar.3. Dogs MUST have access to a space no less than 6’ in radius or 113 sq ft. 4. Dogs MUST receive adequate/enough/wholesome feed, fresh/drinkable/

sanitary water, and veterinary care.5. The following exceptions are allowed: -Owners who can get a vet or ACO to write a letter allowing their dog

29Congratulations to the staff of the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic (RICSNC) in Warwick who recently sterilized its 10,000th patient on January 31st. This milestone was reached just over 18 months after the clinic’s opening.

RICSNC opened its doors July 1, 2010 thanks to grant fund-ing from The Rhode Island Foundation. As a nonprofit, high-volume, high quality facility, the clinic offers subsidized spay/neuter services for cats and dogs. Two veterinarians perform up to 60 surgeries per day in a state-of-the-art facility, which offers free transportation within Rhode Island. Pamela Knoecklein, Clinic Director, says, “The clinic’s remarkable success is due to the highly skilled and dedicated staff that works together with great efficiency, while never compromising the excellent patient care they provide.”

Each year, more than 15,000 animals enter Rhode Island shel-ters and approximately 3,000 are euthanized. Taxpayer dollars must be spent to house and ultimately euthanize those animals in part because there are not enough homes for them all. Spay-ing and neutering is the only way to prevent the birth of unwanted animals, while saving the lives of those animals already in shelters. In addition, RICSNC currently partners with more than 70 shelters and rescue orga-

Belle is one of 7 rabbits we caught that were dumped in the woods in NW Rhode Island. She is a gorgeous New Zealand Red bun. She is a bigger gal, about 7 lbs. and she would be a great first bun and she may also be a very good bonding candidate. We estimate Belle to be 2 to 3 years old.

Henry is a sweet, shy bun. He is one of many adoptable single and pairs of New Zealand rabbits that Sweet Binks has for adoption. Most were from a cruelty/neglect case from November (story on our web site.) Shown is Henry, a young handsome bun that is great with his litterbox and neutered.

Meriwether is one of the 7 rabbits caught that were dumped in the woods late last summer. Meriwether is a sweet boy, estimated to be about 10 months old and he is neutered. He is great with his litterbox and very sweet. Gorgeous bun! He would be a great first bun.

Shiloh is a pretty girl. Everyone comments on how pretty she is but she is very shy. She was also one of the cruelty/neglect case buns from November. She is spayed and excellent with her litterbox but she is shy and needs a patient home. She is sweet but people have not treated her well in her past.

Baby is his real name and he is 7 years old, we got this information from his owners who dumped this poor little guy. I have included a picture of him before we had to shave him, because he was matted to the skin. Baby is currently in a home with 3 other small dogs and a cat, and gets along great with every-one!

Bandit, a 1 yr old Boston Terrier Papillon cross. At about 15 lbs, Bandit is full of love and fun. Bandit is both house broken and crate trained. He is very good about being in the crate and is equally good when left loose in the house. He does not chew on things but does love his rawhide treats. He loves to run and play but also enjoys snuggle time.

Tyson is a 3 yr old dog who is a favorite of both staff and volunteers… he is obedient,walks nicely and has a nice temper-ament… he loves people and some dogs,but would prefer not to live with a cat… While we can never guarantee it,there is a good chance that Tyson is house trained.

Willy is the happiest dog we have ever met. His tail never stops wagging. He is like a steam roller when you walk in the house. Willy is not quite housebroken yet, but we feel that if he is only fed in the early evening he will be just perfect when put on a sched-ule. Willy is not at all destructive and never chews anything, but he LOVES food!

Hi! My name is Luke Ferris, and I get my name from two different celebrity characters: Cool Hand Luke because of my striking blue eyes and Ferris Bueller for my confident, easy charm. I was found as a stray, and after a few months at Animal Control, I was transferred here to PARL! I am about 3 years old, I get along well with other dogs.

Ava is a 1 year old Pitbull who was transfered to us from Providence Animal Control. She was found as a stray, so we do not have too much background history on her. She is a petite girl with a lot of energy. An active home would be ideal for her. She is a playful pup who loves people. She would do best in a home with older children.

Miss Kitty is a green-eyed beauty who was brought to us because her family moved to a place where cats weren’t‚ allowed. For the past 8 years she lived indoors in a full but fairly quiet home that included a 5 year old child, another cat and a small dog. She is very affectionate and we hope that some-one will choose to give her a second chance.

Camaro is a shorthaired orange and white kitten who was transferred to us from another shelter. He is about 3 months old, has a lot of spunk and is a real charmer!Camaro is at our adoption center Petsmart in Johnston, RI!

Daisy is 13 years old. She is a very sweet lov-ing girl. She is looking for her angle that will allow her to live her remaining years happy in a home. She’s is looking someone to love her and care for her until her final day. She loves to go for walks her tail wags like crazy as soon as she sees the leash.

Cash is a lover! He is very outgoing and makes up for his shy brother Tango but they’re both lovers. Cash gets along very well with other cats although they tend to hit him (at least they do here at the shelter anyway) but he doesn’t mind. Cash also loves to sit by the sink so hecan get a drink.

Archie is Daisy’s son. He is 6 years old and loves to go for walks. He’s like the energizer bunny. When he sees you take out the leash his eyes light up like a Christmas tree. He loves to roll in the grass! He didn’t have much of a real life until he came to the shelter and doesn’t know how to play but he’s learning.

Axl is a 5 year old Rottweiler boy who came to us from a high kill shelter and would have been put to sleep for having an upper respi-ratory infection. He is a big boy at 122lbs and we will be working on him dropping 20lbs! He is all better now and will be neutered next week. He is HW negative, up to date on shots and dewormed. Axl is also gentle.

Cyrus is a 6 year old Presa Canario is a gem. Cyrus is great with people and is cool with dogs. He loves to lay on the couch and will follow “his person” from room to room. He is social with strangers and enjoys being pet-ted. Cyrus likes the ladies, canine that is, and only wants to share his home with a female companion or as an only dog.

Tiffany is doing great in her foster home. She is coming along with house training but occasionally has accidents. She is very bonded to her sister, BeBe and we are contemplating whether to split them up.

Oliver is a 5 year old English Mastiff. Oliver’s owners have divorced leaving this poor guy all alone and desperately searching for a new family. Oliver is a gentle giant and is great with adults and children. He is also good with other dogs who are well behaved and is a laid back guy. Oliver has diabetes insipidus and it is controlled with medication 2x a day.

cats and dogs starting immediately. Duties center around playing with and

socializing animals as well as showing animals to potential adopters. Candidates

at least a year. Hours are 11-3. Previous experience with animals in a shelter

setting is helpful but not necessary. Dog volunteers need to be comfortable

Miss Callie Parker(Certified Pet Therapy Dog)

2002 – 2012R.I.P.

Morgan“Morgan, our forever puppy, babysitter, teacher

and guardian, we miss your presence, but your spirit

willl be with us always.”

Born in North Carolina in the year 2002, passed away Thursday, June 28th 2012 at the age of 10.

Callie was rescued in 2008 in North Carolina. She was a pit bull mix and was at a high kill by gassing shelter. A “rescue group” brought her to Rhode Island only to abandon her once she was in Woonsocket, RI. Callie ended up at the Woonsocket animal shelter, alone, fatigued, sick and frightened. Understandably, she had just come from a 15 hour long road trip.

A few days later, Susan Parker (her human mom) was called to evaluate Callie. Susan quickly realized she was a very unique dog with a gift. She was officially adopted by Susan & Harry Parker on July 11th 2008.

Callie was taken to the vet (Dr. Linda

Farrington) on the same day of adoption only to find out she had advanced heart-worm, pneumonia, & a host of other medical problems.

Together, with the vet, the decision was made to treat her. At that time, she had a 50/50 chance of survival.

Callie handled the treatment well and was soon medically stable enough to come home. She did well and enjoyed having her first real home.

Because Callie’s mom and dad are professional dog trainers they knew Callie had a temperament special enough to become a certified pet therapy dog. Callie actually became “Hospice certified” and routinely would make visits to patients in nursing homes spreading her contagious smile

and cheer. She enjoyed the holiday season, visiting various facilities with her human friends singing Canine Christmas Carols. She then moved on to zoo programs, child dog bite prevention programs, girl scout presentations and elementary school programs. She also was a mentor for her mom’s “High school pit bull program”(The Met School, Providence, RI).

Callie was always happy & greeted everyone with a huge pittie smile and a wagging tail. She thrived on giving and getting attention. She adored children & elderly alike.

Callie is survived by her Mom & Dad, Susan & Harry Parker, her canine siblings & her Aunt & Uncle Becky & Jay Hunt, an uncle Harry Parker from New York & also by her many adoring fans and pro-active shelter volunteers & canine shelter pooches.
