Transcript of Summer 2008 A Night to Remember · Row V:Samuel Sneider, Alexander Don, Abbas Jaferi, Trevor...
There were shouts of joy,
tears of sadness, and an
endless collection of memories
conjured up during the
2007-08 Eighth-Grade Closing
Exercises that took place on
May 28. Held in the Parents’
Association Performing Arts
Center, the program began with
Student Council President
Ryan Luck welcoming those in
attendance and initiating the
class processional.
Due to her commitment
before the City Council on
behalf of our campus’s Master
Plan Modification, Pine Crest
School President Dr. Lourdes
Cowgill could not attend,
but congratulated the eighth
graders and sent heartfelt
thanks to their parents via a
pre-recorded video.
The evening’s guest speaker,
Ryan Taney ’05 – a graduate of
-both the Boca Raton and Fort
Lauderdale campuses – was
introduced by recently departed
Head of School Robert S.
Goldberg. Currently a junior at
Harvard, Mr. Taney delivered
a sincere and well-crafted
speech about the importance of
achieving one’s goals while
never forgetting to enjoy
the many moments along
the way.
Head of Middle School
Scott Wing introduced this
year’s Class Valedictorian,
Alison Miller, who spoke
about what Pine Crest has
meant to her and her class.
After the presentation of certifi-
cates, Class Salutatorian
Cristina Cox offered an
address of appreciation to the
parents. Each student then
departed the stage to present a
red rose and personal note to
his/her parent(s).
As a final tribute, the entire
class, under the direction of
Fine Arts Chair Larry
Mellone, sang “My Wish” by
Rascal Flatts. Assistant Head
of Middle School Tammy
Stamm then brought the
ceremony to an end with her
closing remarks.
Pine Crest is proud to
announce that of the 100
eighth-grade students who have
completed their studies on the
Boca Raton campus, 79 will be
continuing their education at
Pine Crest Fort Lauderdale.
Also recognized that week
were the kindergarten class and
fifth-grade class of 2008. The
kindergarten students held their
celebration on May 22 while
the fifth graders participated in
their stepping-up ceremony on
May 29.

The entire Lower School held a surprise
celebration in the Snyder Courtyard on the
morning of May 19 for our former head of
school. Because the send-off was centered
around the song “Happy Trails,” the event
was a Western-themed extravaganza as all
of the students came to school dressed in
their finest dungarees, vests, boots, and
cowboy hats. Head of Lower School Ruth
Jacobs, assisted by Zachary Mazer (who,
thanks to our auction, was filling her shoes
for the day) welcomed Mr. Goldberg on
the steps of the Parents’ Association
Performing Arts Center where he found,
sprawled before him, the entire Lower
School student body.
Organized by kindergarten teacher Susan
Anderson, the proceedings continued with
the students singing “Happy Trails” to Mr.
Goldberg and, in line with the occasion, he
soon found himself dressed in an oversized
hat, vest, chaps, and bandana. Mrs. Jacobs
and Zachary also unveiled a photo collage
of Mr. Goldberg that captured innumerable
memories of him and the students during
his tenure over the past three years.
Furthermore, in his honor, the dining hall
was draped with a banner reading “Bob‘s
Corral” and the menu accommodated the
theme of the day as a good old-fashioned
barbecue lunch was served to the
entire School.
Mr. Goldberg, who left to assume the
headship at The Benjamin School in North
Palm Beach County, will be sorely missed
by members of the administration, faculty,
student body, and parent community.
Possessing a natural gift for connecting
with teachers, students, and their families,
Pine Crest will miss his sincere warmth,
candor, and true concern for our students’
well being, both academically and socially.
Mr. Goldberg first came to Pine Crest as
academic dean of the Fort Lauderdale
campus in 1999. After serving as the Upper
School head and head of school, he was
appointed head of the Boca Raton campus
in August of 2005. As a result of his
steadfast leadership and administrative
acumen, Pine Crest has continued to
flourish and prosper, expanding its
reputation as one of the state’s leading
independent schools. However, it’s the
relationships he has forged and his
ability to bring people together that
Mr. Goldberg cites as his most
important legacies.
“My love for and fascination with
children, my admiration for the work that
excellent teachers do, and my respect for
good parenting seems to have brought these
constituencies closer together during my
time as head of each campus,” he says.
“Any administrator could enumerate the
ways in which the curriculum was tweaked
or policies were adjusted during his or her
tenure. However, I believe that the greatest
value provided Pine Crest during my time
here has been my open and sincere concern
for all of the individuals at our School.”
Down-to-earth and equipped with a great
sense of humor, Mr. Goldberg, above all
else, relished his time with the students,
whether it was reading to the kindergarten
through second-grade classes, lunching
with some of the Lower School children, or
engaging Middle School students in the
hallways. Always a good sport,
he would often dive head-first into all that
was asked of him: playing the role of
“Manners Man” for a Community Building
Assembly video, dressing up as Santa
Claus for our annual holiday show, and
sporting a top hat and coattails as host of
last year’s circus-themed Winter Carnival.
While many of these activities played
into his ebullient nature, his
participation soundly illustrated his
abundant affection for the students and
desire to make Pine Crest a supporting,
nurturing environment where laughter and
smiles go hand-in-hand with hard work and
commitment to character. This passion for
education, while always present at Pine
Crest, was clearly emphasized by Mr.
Goldberg and was one of the signature traits
of his tenure. It is also one of the things he
will miss most about our School. “Pine
Crest is a leader among independent
schools nationally. It is looked to for
guidance regarding curriculum, course
offerings, values education, research-based
methodologies, athletic success, superb
college counseling, and uniquely strong
college placement. I will miss being
associated with ‘the best.’”
Pine Crest wishes Mr. Goldberg the best
of luck and continued success in all of his
future endeavors.

After 22 years of
teaching, Carole
Rausch has
decided to retire.
One of the many
individuals who
has made this
campus so special
over the years, she
also happens to be
one of the few remaining
faculty members who taught on the grounds
when it was still Boca Raton Academy.
Although she began teaching continuing
education courses and had a brief stint as a
fourth grade instructor, Mrs. Rausch has
taught mostly fifth grade during her career
at Pine Crest.
Delightfully genuine and forever
gracious, Mrs. Rausch will always be
remembered by her friends and
colleagues for her sunny disposition, upbeat
attitude, and mastery of the English
language. Known as our campus’s very own
“poet laureate,” she has written countless
poems and tributes not only to fellow
faculty members and administrators who
themselves were departing or retiring, but
also to our campus itself – a place she
considered to be her “home away
from home.”
“I’ve felt so loved over these twenty-two
years,” says the Illinois native, her eyes
welling with tears. “Everyone on this
campus has been like a brother or sister to
me. They buoyed me when my husband
died and lifted me up when I broke my foot.
It didn’t matter if I was sick in spirit or in
body – my colleagues, my students, and
their families have always been there
for me.”
An example of that love and support
occurred earlier this May when, during
the farewell party the faculty held for her,
Mrs. Rausch was stunned to see her sister,
son, and daughter walk into the room to join
her in the celebration. The faculty took it
upon itself to fly her family in from out of
town in order to be with her. It was an emo-
tional and humbling moment for Mrs.
Rausch, but indicative of the family-like
atmosphere at Pine Crest that she feels so
fortunate to have experienced.
“Pine Crest is a very large part of me,
both emotionally and intellectually.”
However, although she may be hanging up
her pointer, she most certainly is not
hanging up her pen. “I really want to write
children’s books,” smiles Mrs. Rausch.
“I’ve been working on some for awhile, but
I’ll be able to devote a lot more time to
them now.”
Mrs. Rausch hopes to make it a family
affair as she’s collaborating with her
grandchildren on a number of poems
and may have two of her granddaughters
eventually illustrate her works. She
also wants to travel and is currently
planning a Mediterranean cruise with her
family. Luckily for us, Mrs. Rausch promis-
es not to be a stranger and will take with
her very fond memories of her Pine
Crest family.
“I’ve certainly learned as much as I’ve
taught here at Pine Crest and it will always
be a very special place.”
New Assistant Head of Lower
School Appointed
Fifth Grade’s Own Poet Laureate
Heads off into the Sunset
Mrs. Rausch poses with longtime friend and fellow fifth-grade teacher Trudy Zimmerman.
Pine Crest is pleased to announce the
appointment of John Kranstover as the
Boca Raton campus’s new assistant head of
Lower School effective August 1, 2008.
Mr. Kranstover holds a B.S. in social
studies education and a Master’s in
education, with a specialization in
curriculum, from the University of
Wisconsin, La Crosse. He spent 10
years as a teacher and administrator
at the American School in Tegucigalpa,
Honduras, and is currently serving as
assistant head of school at the Day School
in Coral Springs, FL.
During his interview, Mr. Kranstover
impressed our administration with his
willingness to listen, his energy, and his
understanding of independent schools.
Please join us in welcoming Mr. Kranstover
to our Boca Raton community.

Eleven Pine Crest students were recently
recognized as winners of the Palm Beach
Fellowship 2007-08 Writing and Creative
Arts Contest. In addition, 23 other students
from our campus received “Honorable
Mention” for their original essays, art
entries, or musical performances, making
Pine Crest one of the most decorated
schools in the county!
Sponsored by the Palm Beach Fellowship
of Christians and Jews, an organization
dedicated to promoting goodwill and
understanding among all cultures and
religions across the county, the Fellowship
received nearly 1,000 entries from students
at 38 schools.
Entries were divided into three
categories: art, writing, and music. The art
and writing entries were then
sub-divided into three groups: Group I
(grades three and four); Group II (grades
five and six); and Group III (grades seven to
twelve). All music entries were judged as
one group and of the 13 students honored,
nine were from our campus, including two-
way ties for first and second place!
Each of the first, second, and third-place
winners were invited to an Awards
Reception and Special Program on
April 28 at the Episcopal Church of
Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach. There
they received their awards and the
first-place winners in the writing and art
categories were asked to read their written
essays and talk about their artwork. The
first, second, and third-place winners in the
music category were asked to perform their
pieces. Pine Crest congratulates the
following 34 students for being recognized

The seventh-grade class, along with 11
faculty and staff chaperones, set out
for their annual trip to Washington D.C. on
May 14. The students packed a lot into
the three-day, two-night affair as they were
able to tour the Museum of Natural History,
the National Archives, the Air and Space
Museum, Arlington Cemetery (where they
also witnessed the Changing of the
Guard), the Washington Monument, and
Spy Museum.
Other highlights included meeting with
Congressman Ron Klein (also a former Pine
Crest parent), lunch at the Ronald Reagan
Building, hearing members of the House
debate an issue inside the Capitol, and
walks through the WWII, Korean, Vietnam,
and Lincoln Memorials.
“The trip was amazing,” said seventh
grader Daiyaan Wali-Mahmood. “It
should have been a week longer.” Eddie
Valenzuela agreed: “D.C. is definitely one
of the memories I will treasure from
this year.”
The experience not only gave the class a
more complete understanding of our
nation’s history, but also complemented the
students’ core curriculum. Their ability to
see our political system at work fit well
with Tobey Marsceill’s American
Government class while the exhibits at the
Air and Space Museum enhanced their
knowledge of earth science, taught by
Marcia Chackan.

On April 8 and 9, the fourth-grade students
put their most recent projects to the test
during the class’s very own rocket launch.
As part of their unit on NASA and space
exploration (which included March’s trip to
the Kennedy Space Center), each fourth
grader took part in the high-flying exercise
which was overseen by science teacher
Nick Campbell and math teacher
Joe Kelley.
The students were first charged with
building their own rockets. This provided
them with a strong sense of independence
as they handled every part of the
construction process by following step-by-
step instructions in the classroom. The
fourth graders also learned about each
component of the rocket and why it was
necessary. They then fired the projectiles
from the George J. Coppola Athletic Field
via a controlled electrical charge from a
wired remote.
This part of the process allowed the
students to continue their study of
measuring as they were taught how to use
basic trigonometry (and a useful tool called
an Altitrack) to find the altitude their
rockets reached. Each student measured
another’s rocket angle of flight and
then performed the math to find its altitude.
Some of the rockets went as high as 1,000
feet! Furthermore, the class was able to per-
sonally witness Newton’s third law of
motion – to every action there is an equal
and opposite reaction.
On May 16, the second-grade students
put forth a wonderful performance during
the grade’s annual Environmental Show.
This year’s theme was “Go Green”
and used characters from “The Magic
Schoolbus” – the popular book series/TV
show that features the adventures of Ms.
Frizzle and her class as they travel to the
most impossible places (the far reaches of
space, the earth’s core, etc.) to learn about
the world around them.
This year’s performance was as
educational as it was entertaining. Under
the direction of Lower School science
teacher Dianne Caliendo, the second
graders taught those in attendance about the
four natural elements: fire (solar power),
water (hydropower), wind (wind power),
and earth (geothermal energy & biomass).
They also explained how we can use
these basic natural elements to provide
alternative energy sources. This tied into
the Lower School’s month-long theme
in regard to the environment and
alternative energy.
Some of the projects included: making
books about and clay sculptures of
endangered species (kindergarten and third
grade), creating instruments out of recycled
products and writing reports about various
insects (first grade), and 3-D books and pre-
sentations of alternative energy sources
(second grade).
Prior to the performance, Mrs. Caliendo
also posted her “Go Green” tip of the day
each morning which provided useful
information about how to save energy,
create less waste, and be environmentally
friendly. On the day of the show, all of the
second-grade students wore their “Pine
Crest Goes Green” T-shirts as well.
Mrs. Caliendo would like to thank Mimi
Abtahi for her tireless assistance, Monica
Ciudad-Real for the show’s music, along
with Debra Blakely, Peggy Lustig,
Barbara Milanese, our Facilities
Department, Roots & Shoots Club, and the
second-grade parents for all of their help.

annual FROG Award. Established last year
to commemorate the lives of Barry Mazer
and his daughter, Sydney, this year’s FROG
(For Recognition of Greatness) Award was
presented by Dawn Mazer to School
Receptionist Linda Bartron.
A fixture on our campus for more than ten
years, Mrs. Bartron is very often the
first friendly face visitors see upon entering
and exiting our School. Her dedication,
helpfulness, humility, and unsurpassed
knowledge of everything Pine Crest has
been a benefit to parents, students, and staff
since her arrival. With the award, Mrs.
Bartron also received an elegant crystal frog
statue and monetary gift.
“I’m so touched and honored,” said an
emotional Mrs. Bartron upon accepting the
award. “I really love working here.”
As a result of the fundraising efforts by
the Mazer Memorial Committee and
Parents’ Association, the FROG Award will
continue to generate an annual gift for
members of the faculty, staff, and/or
administration who exhibit unparalleled
dedication in regard to the mission of Pine
Crest School.

Members of our parent community and
administration filled the Bernstein Family
Commons Room on the morning of May 14
for the Parents’ Association’s annual
Volunteer Recognition Breakfast. Held in
honor of our School’s parents who so
generously dedicated their time and efforts
to the goals of the PA this year, the
event – co-chaired by Stephanie
Brovenick, Marcy Javor, and Rosa
Feeney – also provided the opportunity to
appoint the 2008-09 Parents’ Association
Executive Board.
Pine Crest President Dr. Lourdes
Cowgill also spoke and thanked the parents
for their tireless efforts and commitment to
the School, noting that, “Pine Crest
wouldn’t be what it is without your help.”
The PA then presented a check for
$367,000, the result of the
Association’s efforts this year, to Dr.
Cowgill and Head of School Robert S.
Goldberg. Pine Crest wishes to thank the
Parents’ Association for its generous
donation and unflagging support that is the
hallmark of our School’s parent body.
After thanking all of the parent
volunteers for a wonderfully successful
year, PA President Marci Danzansky
asked that the proposed slate be voted upon.
The following volunteers were elected
unanimously:

PA Presents New Executive Board, Large Donation to School
Each year the Parents’ Association honors
an eighth-grade boy, an eighth-grade girl, a
seventh grader, and a sixth grader for their
service to our School and community. The
Citizenship Awards also recognize these
four individuals for their exemplary charac-
ter in being honest, upright, and dedicated
students. This distinction is the highest
honor a Middle School student can receive.
This year, Michael Klionsky and Alison
Miller were the eighth-grade recipients
along with seventh grader Blake Halim and
sixth grader Brandon Sack. Parents’
Association President Jamie Glachman
presented Michael and Alison with their
plaques during the Eighth-Grade Closing
Exercises while Blake and Brandon
received theirs at the end-of-the-year
ceremonies.
It was ironic that the May 13 Community
Building Assembly, the last one of the year,
highlighted “honor” as the month’s virtue.
For the first time since its inception in 2005,
the DeHaven W. Fleming Excellence in
Teaching Award honored two teachers this
year – one in Lower School and one in
Middle School: beloved Pine Crest veterans
Ronni Leisenring (third grade) and Laurie
Darman (sixth grade).
Usually reserved for one faculty member
each year who exhibits an outstanding
commitment to education, the award was
able to be presented to two teachers due to
the Parents’ Association’s generous
endowment. Both Mrs. Leisenring and Mrs.
Darman each received plaques and a check
for $5,000.
Also recognized at the assembly were
Head of School Robert S. Goldberg for
his nine years of service and exceptional
leadership on both of our campuses,
retiring fifth-grade teacher Carole Rausch,
and departing Chinese-language
teacher Sarah Tan.
The assembly closed, as it does every
year, with the first-grade students parading
down the aisles to the tune of “We’ll
Always Be Together” from the film
Grease. In their hands, each first grader
held a hand-colored placard with the name
of one of this year’s eighth graders. They
then gathered on stage and displayed each
card as a tribute to this year’s eighth-grade
graduating class.

The stars were shining and the weather
was perfect as more than 300 Pine Crest
parents, faculty, and supporters arrived on
the Boca Raton campus on the evening of
March 29 for this year’s Spring Event –
“One World, Many Faces.” Attendees were
treated to a beautiful canopied courtyard
filled with the sights, sounds, and flavors of
the globe. Guests mingled with each other
over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres during
the Silent Auction bidding, and while
making their way through the delectable
dinner stations, they were entertained by the
movement and melody of the Flamenco
show on stage.
The highlight of the evening came when
all of the guests moved to the Parents’
Association Performing Arts Center for the
Live Auction and performance by Michael
Israel. Michael’s “Art in Concert” truly
captivated the entire audience. He created
five paintings before our eyes – John
Lennon, Muhammad Ali, The Four Beatles,
Albert Einstein, and The Pride of the
Panther, which was custom created for
Pine Crest.
The artwork was then purchased by
bidders along with our other great Live
Auction items. The ending to this
spectacular night was spent in the courtyard
dancing and enjoying an incredible dessert
arrangement. Many thanks are given to
everyone who attended and supported our
Annual Auction Event. More than $300,000
was raised, and the net proceeds will
benefit need-based financial aid, faculty
endowment, facility improvements for
Pine Crest School at Boca Raton,
and our School’s Breakthrough Program
which supports underserved yet motivated
middle and high school students from area
public schools.

Spring Event an Absolutely Stunning Success
More than 80 dancers in grades four
through eight put on four show-stopping
performances in April during our Dance
Department’s ballet production of TheWizard of Oz. Everything was top-notch,
from the dancing and acting to the
costuming and set design.
There were lollipop dancers, munchkins,
apple trees, poppy flowers, snowflakes and,
of course, everyone’s favorite characters:
the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion,
and Wicked Witch of the West.
Based upon L. Frank Baum’s classic
novel, the ballet featured music from
various film soundtracks and also included
live narration and special effects.
The production ran once on April 3,
twice on April 4 (where students in grades
pre-k through two from the Fort Lauderdale
campus were invited to enjoy the
performance), and there was an extra
Saturday show on April 5 to which the
public was invited. For that Saturday
matinée, our campus also extended a
special invitation to the children from
JAFCO, The Florence Fuller Center, our
School’s Breakthrough Program, and
Barton’s Boosters.
Pine Crest thanks Dance Director
Andrea Alter for once again creating a
beautiful and enthralling production that
captivated children of all ages.

Dozens of Pine Crest families, friends,
and faculty members attended the May 8
premiere of our Fine Arts Department’s
annual musical which, this year, was Intothe Woods Junior. The show, a kid-friendly
production of the Tony-Award-winning
Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim
(music and lyrics) and James Lapine
(book), was a wonderful success and played
two consecutive evenings on our campus.
Based on the tales of The Brothers
Grimm, the production imaginatively
intertwined the stories of Cinderella, LittleRed Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack and theBeanstalk, and others.
More than 100 talented Pine Crest
students in grades two through eight
participated in the production and the
performance featured live accompaniment
from our own musical instructors, scenery
painted by our Art Club students, and
technical work by members of our
Drama Club.
Pine Crest wishes to thank Drama
Director Debra Blakely and Fine Arts
Chair Larry Mellone for putting together
another amazing production for our
School community.

At the Florida Bandmasters’ Band
Festival at Santaluces High School on April
1, our Concert Band was as close to perfect
as it could get. Our Middle School
musicians received their performance
assessment and were awarded straight
superiors and all A’s with pluses from allthree judges who praised and applauded the
difficulty of the music. In addition, the
students received straight A’s with a perfect
score in sight-reading.
The highlight of the evening was
the band’s playing of Czech-American
composer Václav Nelhýbel’s Festivo – a
memorable performance that completely
wowed the other schools in
attendance. More than 60 Pine Crest parents
and friends attended and one judge even
remarked, “I never saw so many parents
from one school at a band festival!”
Equally impressive was the Middle
School Chorus as it also received straight
superiors during its assessment April 3 at
Bak Middle School of the Arts. A panel of
three adjudicators reviewed the choir in
performance setting and graded 26 separate
choral elements, in three broad categories,
and then assigned a rating for the choir. Our
singers, numbering 55 in total, achieved the
highest possible grades and ratings from
each judge in every category.
A fourth adjudicator also evaluated the
students in regard to sight-singing where
our choir members were given music to
study silently for one minute, and then were
asked to perform the work. The
sight-singing judge graded our singers on
17 separate choral elements, also in three
broad categories. They achieved the highest
possible grade and rating from this judge as
well, in every category. This is the fifth
consecutive year our singers have achieved
straight superior marks.
Pine Crest heartily congratulates each
group of students and their unbelievable
achievements. Band Director John Aiello
and Choral Conductor Larry Mellone
are also to be commended, along with
their team of private instructors, who
went above and beyond to help prepare the
students.

against 200 other middle school and high
school performers from Palm Beach and
Broward Counties and came away with
two awards.
They were presented with plaques for
placing third in the Dance Group and,
in addition, they also won the Director’s
Choice Award for Best in Show. The girls
were entered into the competition
by Mrs. Alter.
Seventh grader Amanda Miller also
competed in the vocal category and
performed a wonderful solo. Pine Crest

More than 100 students put on an
extraordinary performance May 13 during
the Spring Concert which featured our
campus’s four different band
ensembles: Lower School Band, Middle
School Concert Band, Jazz Band II, and
Jazz Band I.
Under the direction of Mr. Aiello, each
group sizzled on stage and sounded far
beyond the capabilities of mere elementary
and middle school-aged students.
The evening’s music was an
eclectic arrangement that included
everything from Jimmy Buffett and Elvis
Presley to Andrew Lloyd Webber and
the above-mentioned Nelhýbel. Highlights
included Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel,” 60’s
favorite “Hang on Sloopy,” excerpts from
the Four Seasons-inspired Broadway smash
Jersey Boys, Rob Thomas’s “Smooth,” and
James Brown’s “I Feel Good” (during
which Mr. Aiello delighted the audience
with a rare saxophone solo performance).
The concert was a true thrill for those in
attendance and Pine Crest wishes to thank
Mr. Aiello, his extremely talented
musicians, and Pine Crest’s private lesson
instructors who work with the students
throughout the year: Allan Finn
(woodwind), Drew Gardner (brass),
Sharon Pomerants (French horn), and

Congratulations to our boys’ tennis team
for capturing their eighth league title in
dramatic fashion on May 27 as they sunk
the Scots of Saint Andrew’s 4-3. The squad
found itself down 3-2 after singles play with
its two wins coming from Benjamin Battle
and Jordan Gershman.
Gershman put forth a Herculean effort as
he battled back from an 0-3 deficit to take a
7-5 lead, only to see his opponent win the
next two games and force a tiebreaker.
Down 0-5 in the tiebreaker, Gershman
refused to quit and came all the way back to
claim the much-needed victory.
Needing a sweep in doubles play, the
teams of Ned Shashoua and Battle along
with Michael Klionsky and Gershman
came through, each winning by a score of
8-6. The sweep secured the championship
for our Panthers – the boys’ first since 2005.
Pine Crest congratulates Coach Dean
Kadera, his staff, and the members of this
year’s team: Benjamin Battle, Joseph
Brander, Stanley Brenner, Jordan
Gershman, Michael Klionsky, Samuel
Nemiroff, Ned Shashoua, Kevyn Shroff,
and Reuben Walker.
Despite finishing an impressive 7-2, good
enough for third place in the league's South
Division, the girls’ tennis team just missed
the playoffs as only the top two teams from
each division qualified for the post-season.
Yet the girls still had a tremendous year and
the coaching staff would like to thank them
for their hard work, perseverance, and
success throughout the season.

The spring sports teams wrapped up their
seasons in April and, for the most part,
experienced successful campaigns this year.
Our boys’ lacrosse team finished with a 6-4
record as they chalked up wins
against Unity Christian, North Broward
Preparatory (twice), Henderson (twice), and
Spanish River Christian. This year’s MVP
award went to both Gabriel Gonzalez and
David Orner, while Hayden Ginsberg
picked up the Coaches’ Award.
The girls’ lacrosse team also had a great
season highlighted by victories over
Henderson (twice), St. Mark’s, and Saint
Andrew’s en route to 4-3-1 record. Allison
Shapiro was named the squad’s MVP,
Caitlin Epstein received the Coaches’
Award, and Madison Levine, Brooke
Wayne, and Shapiro were each selected as
league All-Stars.
The baseball team, which made do with a
short-handed roster and injuries throughout
the year, fought hard the entire season and
ended up 2-6-1. Pitching ace Matthew
Busel was named team MVP and ultimate
utility-man Andy Wheeler, who played
every position but shortstop, earned the
Coaches’ Award.
The coaching staffs of all three teams
thank the players for their hard work and
commitment this year, as well as the
parents, faculty, and staff for their
continued support.
