Week beginning: 4th May
Over the course of this week, you will be researching and learning about a famous
Mexican celebration- Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Day of the Dead is
celebrated across 3 days between October 31st and November 2nd. This is a celebration
during which the dead are honoured, although it is not a sad time; instead, it is a fiesta
(festival/celebration) of flowers, food, candles, parades, prayer and fun.

Title: Day of the Dead Skull
There is probably no more iconic symbol for Day of the Dead than the skull, or
“calavera”. The “calavera” is usually an ornately decorated representation of a skull,
often featuring flowers, animals, and other decorations. During the holiday, this
imagery is seen everywhere, from Ofrendas, to paper crafts, and even to cartoons on
newspapers.
Everything about Día de Muertos is bright and colourful, especially the decorations.
Here are meanings behind some of the colours and symbols you’d see on Dia de los
Muertos.
Yellow – Represents the sun and unity, because under the sun, we’re all the same.
White – Using this colour in decorations represents spirit, hope and purity.
Red – Represents blood and life.
Purple – For this holiday, purple represents mourning, grief and suffering.
Pink – The bubbly colour signifies happiness.
Marigolds – People spread petals from these round, yellow-orange flowers to guide
spirits of loved ones to the celebration.
Ofrendas – Altars that are festively adorned with decorations, candles, food and
photographs.
Flowers - to symbolize life
Cobwebs - symbolize death
Burning candles set inside the eyes of a skull - a sign of remembrance
Task:
1) Draw your own Day of the Dead skull. Try to decorate your skull using symbols
and colours (if possible) that you’d see on Dia de los Muertos.
2) Here is a video that will help you to draw an outline for your scull (watch until
3:30). It is up to you if you watch the full video for ideas on how to decorate
your scull.
