SUMMARY REPORT
2017 ACTIVITIES
Poços de Caldas/MG
2017

PRESENTATION
In the year 2000, Fazenda Lambari and Astro Café promoted a cultural action in which the
main focus was to encourage reading in the rural area of Poços de Caldas town, MG.
Coordinated by A COR DA LETRA - Center for Studies and Research in Reading, Literature and
Youth - teachers from two rural schools received training to be reading mediators, and schools
received a donation for children´s and young people´s literature books for their library.
To better operationalize these actions, in 2002 an association was created: Lambari Institute
Art, Culture and Education, the mission of which is: To support, encourage, develop and
promote culture, education, citizenship, preservation and conservation of the environment
and sustainable development. The Kaffehuset Friele Educational and Cultural Center was
created in October 2003 in a joint action between Kaffehuset Friele S.A., Astro Café, Lambari
Farm and Lambari Institute.
In 2012, the then owner of Fazenda Lambari, Mrs. Anna Helena Mariani Bittencourt, donated
to the Lambari Institute the land where the Kaffehuset Friele Educational and Cultural Center
and its annexes are located now, so that this work could have greater autonomy and affirm
itself as a place for public use. Several initiatives have been taken since then to develop and
sustain this action.
The Center is located at Poços de Caldas/Palmeiral Highway, KM 12. Operating from Monday
to Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on holydays, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and
from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Center's mission is to promote and disseminate brazilian
regional culture and also universal culture in Poços de Caldas through the valorization of the
diversity of cultural experiences of our society, as well as supporting cultural manifestations
that contribute to the expansion of expression freedom, to artistic and intellectual creation
and to stimulate new initiatives and cultural actions.
Considering Culture as an essential axis for the construction of the country's identity and one
of the most effective instruments in promoting citizenship, the Cultural Center offers the
public a free and diversified event schedule, as well as keeping accessible a collection of
literature and a computerized room aimed to the use, research, promotion and stimulation of
artistic manifestations production and diffusion in different areas of expression.

Education in Brazil is far from satisfactory. Although the most recent diagnoses point to more
positive rates, there is still much to be done. Most of the population residing in Brazilian rural
areas has very restricted access to cultural assets. On the other hand, they have their own
culture, their own myths and stories. To ensure that this population maintains its beliefs and
customs and that they can value what builds their identity is fundamental. In addition, it is
also necessary to enable them to know and to have access to what is universal.
At the Kaffehuset Friele Educational and Cultural Center, the workshops and activities are
chosen in order to enhance the transmission of regional culture, as well as to promote access
to basic tools for the development of the children who benefit from the place. We have in
literary reading one of our main focuses, because it favors the formation of readers.
In the proposal, all actions develop from literature reading. Reading allows contact with the
different, with other ways of thinking and relating to the world and nature. By reading,
children expand their knowledge, their imagery and their language. Language is the basic tool
through which we relate to the world, giving it meaning and enabling interaction in the
different social contexts in which we are inserted.
Having the support of the Rouanet Law, partners and sponsors in 2017 was extremely relevant
to the continuity of the Kaffehuset Friele Educational and Cultural Center. All the activities
developed contributed significantly to the individual development of the participants and the
community. Since its inception, many people in this rural region have been directly benefited.
It was through the possibility of reading literature and being in contact with narratives in
general that many other works have began and were extended during these fourteen years of
existence of the Kaffehuset Friele Educational and Cultural Center.
The access to books has brought this population a vast universe of knowledge and practice.
Digital inclusion provided them the contact with a new tool and the discovery of new
possibilities. The variety of media, books, magazines, newspapers, newsletters and digital
platforms continuously allow information, knowledge, imagery from other cultures, artistic
languages, realities and worlds to be accessible.
It is believed that through the different artistic activities proposed, and the technical
knowledge that each workshop presents, people are encouraged to look at the nature that
surrounds them, at the diverse and the familiar, to value the talents, the work, the others and
4
culture in its multiplicity. The Art presented "re-presents" everyone and also "enlightens" and
gives value to what one has: the colleagues, the community, the nature that surrounds them.
Thus, it is possible to appreciate and promote the preservation of nature and all its different
forms of life and expression.

already read, end up getting the taste of reading and read to the younger children who
cannot read yet. " (Educator Tatiane Ap. Da Silva).
