Exalta Health CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD

Fiscal Year 2017-18 was a year of challenge but also great success. It was a year of exploring collaborations with Streams of Hope and Catherine’s Health Center, reaching out through social media, and developing a new strategic plan. We institutionalized many processes and standardized the way we do things. We saw staff and board members leave and new ones join us.

Our dependency on the generosity of our donors was both gratifying and challenging. We know that we must diversify our revenue sources. We also know it is time to take next steps in qualifying to become a Federally Qualified Health Center.

We continue to be amazed at the dedication of the volunteers and staff who day in and day out provide life-giving quality care. And our donors – some who have been with us for many years – continue to make this mission possible.

Looking forward, we are excited about the possibilities of community collaborations. We are eager to provide services to children and their families. We know we will grow our services and our staff.

And we once again move forward, trusting that our Lord will provide.

Ed Postma Chairperson, Board of Directors

Both Bobby and Dawn’s spirits are strong, despite the many hardships they have faced individually, and as a couple. Married for 37 years, they have experienced the challenges of unemployment, major health issues, mental health diagnoses in their family, and raising two children.

OUR MISSION

Exalta Health reflects the spirit of Christ by providing compassionate, accessible healthcare.

From Cancer to Donors: Advocates for Exalta Health

While working as a medical transcriptionist, Dawn heard about Exalta Health from longtime Exalta Health volunteer Dr. Jim Samuelson. At the time, the couple did not have insurance, so it was a blessing that they both were able to become patients at Exalta Health.

Dawn has battled cancer more than once in her life. As a teenager, she had thyroid cancer and after treatment, the scan revealed a clean bill of health.

This past summer, Dawn experienced another cancer challenge. After surgery to fix a detached retina, she spent weeks only able to look downward to help recovery. This caused a sore neck. One day while rubbing her sore neck, she felt a hard spot. She called her primary care provider, Dr. Laura VanderMolen, Exalta Health Medical Director, on a Friday and Dr. VanderMolen saw her on Monday.

Dr. VanderMolen immediately began making phone calls to help Dawn find the best care possible. Dr. O’Toole, MD, responded and found a lump the size of a plum. It was metastasized thyroid cancer and had been growing inward, and thus undetected, for over three decades.

Dawn had surgery, and because of many complications, was hospitalized for 28 days.

It was a long, hard trial. But Dawn kept her faith and received support from Bobby and her Exalta Health family. Both Dr. VanderMolen and Kristen Meyer, Exalta Health Chaplain, visited Dawn in the hospital.

Dawn is so thankful for the urgency Dr. VanderMolen had in getting her the care she needed. “Dr. Laura listens. If you notice something, she is always willing to pursue it. I am very thankful for this place. The mission you have is incredible.”

Bobby has also found great care at Exalta Health. Dr. Chris Shoemaker, staff physician at Exalta Health, whom Bobby has been seeing for years, “has been a good friend of mine. He sincerely cares; he knows my kids’ names by heart.”

Dawn and Bobby have become advocates for Exalta Health, telling anyone, they meet to get their medical and dental care at Exalta Health. They also pray for the clinic. Because they are in a better place financially than when they first came to the clinic, they made a donation this year. Bobby explains, “This place has opened up a ministry for my wife and me. We could never afford the insurance that we needed. God has blessed us.”

Magnolia and Armando owned their own business in Guatemala City.

With her background as an accountant and his as a successful salesman, they sold appliances wholesale and owned a furniture factory. However, the economy in Guatemala began to fail and the two lost everything.

With extended family already in the U.S., Armando came to the U.S. first to look for work with Magnolia and their children joining him later. Eventually, the family made Grand Haven, MI, their home and began attending Covenant Life Church, working there cleaning.

Armando battled cancer in 2002. Because of the intensive chemo and radiation, he now has continued health problems. However, they did not have insurance and could not afford medical or dental care.

While cleaning at the church, they saw a brochure about Exalta Health. It was an answer to their prayers.

Prior to coming to Exalta Health, Armando was not able to afford the dental care he needed. But now he has a place to meet his primary dental and medical needs. Magnolia also comes to Exalta Health for medical and dental services. Dr. Laura VanderMolen, Medical Director at Exalta Health, was able to facilitate a referral to Metro Health to monitor a bump on her eye.

“We can have good care at Exalta Health that we can’t afford in another place,” says Magnolia. The two now have Medicaid, and Magnolia encourages anyone who is looking for medical or dental help to come to Exalta Health. “I think it’s a good decision, even if you have insurance. They help people here. The doctors here don’t pay attention if you’re a person with or without insurance. The treatment is the same.”

Office visits made by patients in 2018.

José was born in Veracruz, Mexico, where he worked as a farmer.

In 1990, José, his wife, and four children immigrated to the U.S. looking for better opportunities for José to support his family. Since immigrating, José has maintained steady work, first as a cook, then at a cereal company, and then a factory repairing wood pallets.

Because he has diabetes, José was looking for a medical home to help him manage his health. His sisters told him about Exalta Health. After talking to the medical team during his first visit, he was set up with long time Exalta Health volunteer Dr. Jim Samuelson. He was also referred to the dental, vision, and lab services at the clinic.

Now that he has learned to manage his diabetes, José feels very positive about his health and life. He says he feels supported by staff and volunteers at Exalta Health “because everybody treats me with dignity and respect.” He trusts everyone who is working with him on maintaining his health.

“ Everybody treats me with dignity and respect.”

José has since become an ambassador for Exalta Health. He’s told his brother to come to Exalta Health because he has health issues, and has recommended the clinic to his friends, telling them about the affordable fees and “high quality services.”
