1 MN Internship High School Agency Description: Minnesota Internship Center (MNIC) is a decentralized charter high-school with three locations targeting primarily low-income African American youth, ages 15-21 who are motivated to earn their high school diploma despite facing barriers to their education. MNIC strives to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. At our Sabathani site, we emphasize being a "Safe Site" that serves students who want to learn in a bully-free zone, including many LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender, Queer/Questioning and Allied) students. In addition, MNIC staff provide support services to meet holistic student needs including college and career assistance, health advocacy, housing support, and social and emotional support. Position Description: Volunteers are prized members of the MNIC team who work as tutors and advocates. They work on various tasks tailored to their learning goals and MNIC program needs. America Reads and Counts:

Agency Description:

America Reads and Counts is a tutoring program in which Normandale students work within the Bloomington

Public School District to help elementary and middle school children improve their reading and math skills.

Job Description:

We are looking for Normandale students to tutor Bloomington area school children in grades K-7 in reading

and children in grades K-12 in math. Spend 2-4 hours a week during a set time at the child's school, tutoring

the student in math or reading. You will need your own transportation to and from the school; several schools

are on the bus line. You must also pass a background check (no cost to you). Tutoring in this position comes

with many rewards, offering each tutor a chance to make a difference in a child's life, gain valuable skills, and

build their resume. While previous tutoring experience is helpful, it is not required to apply. We offer tutor a

training session as well as resources for working with children. The program seeks applicants with the desire

to help a child succeed and the energy and time it takes to make this commitment. We do our best to work

around your schedule when we place you with a child.

Partnership Academy:

www.paschool.org Agency Description:

Partnership Academy is a K-5 Charter School in Richfield. They serve a diverse student group and the school

has a large population of Latino students for whom Spanish is their first language. Partnership Academy is

authorized by Project for Pride in Living (PPL), a nonprofit housing and social services organization. Through

this authorization, PPL seeks to empower students from low-income families to achieve success in school and

in life through academic support and hands-on enrichment opportunities.

Position Description:

After-School Program Tutors/Mentors:

Partnership Academy seeks volunteers of diverse backgrounds and experiences to help make reading, writing,

and learning fun. Volunteers serve as After-School Program Tutors/Mentors Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday

3:45-5:30 pm. Most volunteers serve 1 or 2 days per week; the minimum commitment is serving one night per

week for a minimum of 1 semester.

However, we intend to recruit volunteers that can commit to a full academic school year.

After-School Program Tutors/Mentors:

• Support youth as they engage in fun literacy-building activities

• Help youth meet individual literacy goals in a 1:1 or small group setting

preferred, though students can volunteer for the semester.

Oasis for Youth www.oasisforyouth.org Agency Description: Oasis for Youth provides services for youth ages 16-21 who are struggling with

homelessness and housing stability in Bloomington, Richfield and Edina. We are a volunteer-driven,

community-supported tax exempt 501(c)3 corporation. Oasis for Youth operates a drop-in resource center.

We provide onsite support and services as well as referrals to resources for shelter, counseling and medical

assistance. We are participants in the Suburban Host Home Program that recruits, screens, trains and supports

volunteer hosts for homeless youth.

Drop-In Resource Center

Hours: 2:30-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Our work begins with assessing the strengths and needs of a youth regarding housing, basic needs, education,

employment, safety, and wellness. Youth goal plans and supportive services help youth move toward stability.

Services:

Personal hygiene products and school supplies

Clothing and Food

Tutoring and educational assistance

Employment Search assistance

A safe, comfortable and welcoming place to rest

Referrals to crisis shelter and supportive housing programs

Job Description:

Drop-In Center Volunteers

A criminal background check and references are required, with a minimal cost paid by the volunteer.

Volunteers in the drop-in center must be 21 years of age or older.

Volunteer shift hours are Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Volunteers assist with set-up and

closing of the center, which requires some light lifting and light cleaning. Volunteers help to provide a safe,

warm and welcoming atmosphere for the youth who visit. On-site volunteer duties include welcoming youth,

assisting with youth intake and goal plans, providing support to youth and referral information for services,

assisting with various programmed activities, and assisting with use of laundry and computer facilities, as

needed. Volunteers for tutoring, outreach, transportation, and youth programs are also needed and also need

to be 21 years of age and complete a background check process and training.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Other opportunities include helping with special events including clothing and hygiene supply drives and

assistance with advocacy, outreach, fundraising, publicity and marketing. Host home program volunteers and

host homes are also needed.

about Oasis, what you are interested in, and how we might contact you.

Second: Complete the Volunteer Application, Background Check Authorization, Confidentiality Statement and

Driver's Release. You can download a PDF of the application online at www.normandale.edu/cee in the key

Please attach an $8 check made payable to Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to cover the cost of the

background check.

Third: When we have your completed documents, we will contact you to schedule a time to meet or talk by

phone about your interests and availability and we will process your application packet.

Fourth: Attend a 1.5 hour training and orientation. Review our Policy and Procedure Manual

Fifth: Begin volunteering! Most students work two shifts per month to complete their Service Learning

requirements, and some continue on with Oasis after their requirements are completed.

Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center

Agency Description: The Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) is a secure 24-hour detention facility for juvenile

male and female offenders up to age 18 who have been arrested and are waiting for court disposition or

placement. The facility has a capacity of 87 beds with an average length of stay of seven days. JDC provides

educational programming, including high school and GED readiness curriculum, and activities which include

recreational exercise, life skills, and debate. Location: downtown Minneapolis at 510 Park Avenue,

Minneapolis, MN 55487.

Job Description:

Lobby Greeters: Welcome parents and visitors into the facility. Provide information about the visiting process

and direct individuals coming in for court appearances. Lobby Greeters provide reassurance and information,

making the JDC a more welcoming place.

Volunteer Hours: 9:00 am-3:00 pm and 8:30-9:30 pm, 7 days/week.

Important Requirements: MUST commit to serving 54 hours over the semester. Must be 21 years old and pass

a fingerprint background check and a reference check. The background check can take 1 month, so you must

apply by Wednesday, Jan. 29th. If interested, apply as soon as possible. Because of length of the application

process service-learning students should be prepared to volunteer about 7-8 hours per week mid-October

through April 30th.

How to Apply:

Fill out an online volunteer application form found on the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center's

website. Under the Education section note that you are a Normandale service-learner looking to complete 54

service-learning hours.

Successfully pass a reference check (we contact 2 references)

Participate in an exploratory interview.

Interview with perspective supervisory staff.

Successfully pass a fingerprinting background check.

Attendance at mandatory volunteer orientation session.
