Jazz and other arts. This is the theme of the Torino Jazz Festival 2016: theatre, dance, visual arts, cinema, photography, literature. Indeed, jazz was the greatest musical innovation of the 20th century and urged artists and intellectuals to rethink certain Western aesthetic arts (and beyond).

This edition of the festival seeks to fathom the mix of languages, as always with new and exclusive productions: the theatre-jazz of the “Persecutore”, from the famous short story by Julio Cortázar, with Vinicio Marchioni and the quartet of Francesco Cafiso; the theatrical-musical story of jazz standards of Monica Demuru; the music steeped in the art of the “Ultimo Cielo”, with Battista Lena, a gang of boys and the Pitture industriali by Pinot Gallizio; Antonio Sanchez playing live during the screening of the film Birdman; the happenings of the dancer Marije Nie; the shows at the Museo delle Arti Orientali and at the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation; the mix of languages of Pulse! (Jazz and the City), the most ambitious production in this edition, a trip through the sounds of the city envisioned by Max Casacci, Daniele Mana and Emanuele Cisi, with a range of special guests, from Musica Nuda and Enrico Rava.

Of course the Torino Jazz Festival is also much more: the visits to the Fringe, the international hard bop of Jazz Club Torino, the exhibition of the most surprising Italian proposals, that culminates with the exceptional Orchestra Nazionale Jazz Giovani Talenti (guest Rosario Giuliani), the two great orchestras of Roy Paci and MinAfrìc, accompanied by the great voices respectively of Hindi Zahra and of the Faraualla, the new spiritual space to the Gran Madre, the music on the river and on the Towers in Piazza Vittorio, the best of contemporary jazz with Tim Berne, the tribute by Fabrizio Bosso to Ellington, jazz manouche, and the feast of the 1st of May, where the medley explodes with progressive rock (Artchipel), hard rock (Giovanni Falzone with Led Zeppelin) culminating with the overwhelming soul of Incognito. All types of art are involved; all kinds are involved; the whole city is engaged: this is the Torino Jazz Festival 2016.

Stefano ZenniArtistic director

Even this year TJF Fringe offers, from 22 to 25 April and on 30 April, International Unesco day for Jazz, a broad overview of the best of international jazz that will fill Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the area around the river Po and the streets and the area of the Quadrilatero Romano with music.

There will be many musicians, among whom stand out the names of Rita Marcotulli, Maria Pia De Vito, Gabriele Mirabassi, Rosario Bonaccorso, Luciano Biondini, Michele Rabbia and the extraordinary tap dance artist Marije Nie.There will be as special guests the Grammy winner Robert Glasper, the trio Food of Thomas Strønen and Iain Ballamy, the group Ifrikya of Karim Ziad and the quintet Lingomania.

There will be many original productions, from tributes to Ponty, Ayler and Joni Mitchell, to dance shows at the Museo di Arte Orientale (MAO); collaboration with Auand Records, with the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, the presence of Tom Bancroft and of the young group Thunkfish, the centre of an important artistic exchange between the two cities.

The beauty of Music on the River and the concerts from the top of the Night Towers are characteristic of the spectacular side of TJF Fringe, that also includes food and wine, street food, dance areas, marching bands, jam sessions, parties and impromptu events …

With ninety events involving more than two hundred artists worldwide, TJF Fringe confirms its vocation for experimental festivals without any borders, open to all forms of art.
