Give adequate time to revise material learned previously, e.g. place value up to 99,999 (4th class) and up to 999,999 (5th class). • Revise the concept of place value by explaining the value of each digit in words and in figures, e.g. 964,823. The digit on the right represents units. Each place to its left represents a value 10 times greater. So we have 3 tens, 2 units, 8 hundreds, 4 thousands, 6 thousands and 9 hundred thousands. • Give the children plenty of time to practise writing large numbers in word form. • Remind the children of the value of each number and the importance of aligning the digits according to their value. • Use number cards to make the smallest and largest numbers possible. Objectives Tick Date • Identify place-value in whole numbers. • Add and subtract whole numbers and decimals (to 3 decimal places) with and without a calculator. Mathematical language, and talk and discussion • Unit, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, million, place value, digit, number, zero, order, least, greatest, more, less, round, insert, writing in expanded form, notation board, petitions • Addition, subtraction, add, plus, find the sum of, total, profit, greatest profit, find the difference between, minus, take away, sign, calculate, decrease by, increase by, round, estimate, equals, altogether, more, less, combined profit 11 Planet Maths Teacher Resources • 6th Class Use of the environment • Height of mountains, depths of oceans and seas, distances between cities, etc. • Use a shopping catalogue to add up a shopping bill, subtract the bill from the customer’s money. • Use an internet shopping site or a catalogue to estimate prices of a few items.
