Formerly, the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, he is currently Reserve Bank of India Professor of Industrial Economics Centre of Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. He is an unusual musician. He is an eminent economist and combines academic activities with a growing presence on the music circuit. His Khayals are a lot like the films of Goddard—they have a beginning, a middle, and an end; but not in that order. Prof. Marjit's brand of music qualifies him as the messiah of post modernism in Hindustani music. Sugata also composes music for the theatre and television. In 1995, his work in the theatre earned him the West Bengal State Academy Award for the best musical score. In his rendition the nuances of Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Kumar Gandharv have significant yet non-overpowering influence. Sugata's special interest lies in composing Classical devotional songs. His CD “In Search Of” (2014) with self-composed Bhajans based on Pure Ragas is available worldwide Sugata Marjit
