What Happened to Lent?

What a strange Lent this year … no daily mass, no Stations of the Cross and Eucharistic Adoration of Friday evenings, no Sunday mass. We are still obliged to follow the rules for fast and abstinence, but that doesn’t seem like enough. Many parishes have their churches open for private prayer. For the vulnerable population this is not a good option. You can set time aside for prayer at home. The Pope invited us to say the Lord’s Prayer at the same time, world-wide on March 25th. We can say the Lord’s prayer every day. Ask Mary for her intersession by praying the Rosary. Many, if not most, parishes have learned how to live stream Sunday mass. This is good, but I miss the Eucharist. (Check your parish web site for information.) The Diocese of Rockville Centre televises Sunday mass from St. Agnes Cathedral at 11:00 am on CFN (Optimum 29/137, Verizon FIOS 296, Spectrum 162/471). Brooklyn and the Archdiocese of New York also televise masses. I have found that in lieu of daily mass, reading the daily readings for mass helps me prepare my mind for celebration Jesus’ death and resurrection. You can find the readings for Sunday and daily masses on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops web site. Go to usccb.org and click on Bible and choose Today’s Reading from the drop-down menu. Best Lent Ever is another source you might try. Google Dynamic Catholic. We will get through this. We are a strong and resilient people, but we all must do our part. Follow the directions of the medical community. Most important, practice social distancing and wash your hands frequently, for at least 20 seconds. How long is 20 seconds? Some say you should sing Happy Birthday twice while washing. My wife had another suggestion. Say two Hail Mary’s while washing your hands. That sounds twice as good to me. Stay healthy, and I hope we can get together again soon. The editorial staff wishes you a vey happy, holy, and healthy Easter. Michael Tully, PGK,FDD,PFN Vivat Jesus!

Pope Francis’ Prayer During Coronavirus Pandemic

As trustful children we turn to the father. We do it every day, several times a day; but right now we wish to beg mercy for mankind, so sorely tried by the coronavirus pandemic. And we do this together, Christians of every Church and Community, of every tradition, of every age, language, and nation. We pray for the sick and their families; for health workers and those who help them; for the authorities, law enforcement agencies and volunteers; for the ministers of our communities. Today many of us celebrate the Incarnation of the Word in the womb of the Virgin Mary, when her humble and total “Behold” reflected the “Behold” of the Son of God. We too entrust ourselves, with full confidence, to the hands of God, and with one heart and one soul we pray:

“Our Father …”

Surviving the Pandemic Bob Slingo, PGK, FDD, PCC

When I first realized the seriousness of this terrible Coronavirus pandemic, which is affecting all

of us, I knew that I needed to do something in addition to my strong faith to help me and my

loved ones to get through it. I love to read and thought I might find a good book to read … I did!

Matthew Kelly‟s The Rhythm of Life is both inspirational and informative. I highly recommend it

to help you and your loved ones through this difficult time.

The review describes the book as, “Rhythm of Life is a brilliant and cleared-eyed rejection of the

chaotic lifestyle that has captured the world, written with common sense, humor, and

extraordinary insight. This book is destined to change lives!”

The Rhythm of Life is available on Amazon and other book sellers. Try this address https://g.co/kgs/SKQivm .

In 1954, lobbying by the

Order of the Knights of

Columbus helped convince the

U.S. Congress to add the

phrase “under God” to the

Pledge of Allegiance.

President Dwight Eisenhower wrote to Supreme Knight, Luke E.

Hart, thanking the Knights for their “part in the movement to have

the words „under God‟ added to our Pledge of Allegiance.”

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,

and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father

Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service

of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son,

Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his

Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater

confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and

outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J.

McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession,

grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord.

Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
