Martin Luther King ASP AftercareSuccess Story 2014

The Educational Advisory Board from the city of Lauderhill awarded the grant that allowed me to provide 75 students with 16 hours of inspirational and motivational instruction in reading and math!

The Success Activity Kit is our book of the year which includes ‘How to Make Good Choices’ ‘You Can Be Life Skills’ ‘Character Building’, an Agenda and Anti-Bullying workbooks that the students can personally take home and start their own libraries. 25 students from Martin Luther King Elementary School completed and earned their Success Activity Kit, Certificates, and their $2-bills because they ‘Got Paid 2Read2’. To top it all off, they also received a celebration party. The goal of this program is to promote reading year-round and to let each student know who they are and what they can become:

“I am a boy growing up to become a young man.” “I am a girl growing up to become a young woman.”

Lauderhill J.E.M.Summer Program

Success Story2014

The Community Learning Center brought their in-house field trip “I Got Paid 2Read2” to the city of Lauderhill’s J.E.M. Summer camp program. We worked with 28 students that successfully completed 16 hours of training in the Success Activity Kit.

The students also received certificates and $2-bills because they ‘Got Paid 2Read2’. Each student acquired the ability to learn thru our inspirational and motivational instruction in reading and math. This accelerated social and emotional development strengthened their ability to communicate effectively, foster self- confidence, character and creativity.

To top it all off, they also received a celebration party.

The grant received from the City of Lauderhill’s Educational Advisory Board, provided enough additional funds to serve this group of students.

Maplewood Elementary Success Story 2012"Mr. Eddie Powell brought his enthusiasm and winning ways to our Accelerated Reader program this year. Accelerated Reader is a reading incentive program. Students read books, take a computer-based comprehension quiz, and the reader is able to be awarded points for their correct answers. Points are redeemable for prizes. The program hit a slump in January 2012 and Mr. Eddie stepped forward with an idea to increase student participation in this program.

The program "I Got Paid 2Read2" was Mr. Powell's new incentive for Maplewood students. Students who met their goals for the year would be rewarded with certificates and brand new $2.00 bills. He personally promoted the new incentive to students in their classrooms, in the hallway, in the cafeteria, and through our closed circuit TV broadcast every morning.

Additionally, he reached out to the community for businesses and individuals who would donate money for the $2.00 bills. Because of his tireless efforts, enough money was raised to award 354 students their $2.00 prize and certificate!

Mr. Powell set a goal for our school, as well as for himself, and made it happen. His determination and enthusiasm is remarkable!"

Sincerely yours,

Mrs. Judy Slade Reading Resource SpecialistMaplewood Elementary School
