Imagine discovering a
way to improve genetic
understanding of autism and
having a profound impact on
thousands of lives. Imagine
being given the opportunity to
design a theoretical architectural
project at the Ground Zero site
in New York City, then traveling
there to present it in person.
Imagine proposing a concept for a
sustainable living apartment that
tests new ideas of lowering energy
consumption and then winning a
$70,000 grant to actually build it.
You dont have to just imagine those
things when youre a student at the
University of Utahyou can nd
yourself doing them every day. At
the U, when youre not collaborating
with peers and being mentored by
world-class faculty in the classroom,
you can choose to meet with
community leaders and business
professionals outside the classroom
to develop and test your ideas.
Thats what makes an education at
the University of Utah so unique.
If you can imagine it, you can do it.
At Imagine U.
The boundaries of our campus and
our students opportunities now
extend across the globe. Recently,
Business Scholars in the David Eccles
School of Business traveled to Seattle,
Washington where they networked
with alumni and met with leaders
at JP Morgan Chase Foundation,
Madrona Ventures, Harken Capital
and Thermo-King International,
and alumni at Costco and Microsoft.
Networks like this are what await
you at the University of Utah, and
they can help turn your vision of the
future into a reality.
My City as Textclass that I took as part
of my Honors College Core Experience
was really fun and interesting! We
were able to travel around Salt Lake
City in small groups researching
assigned locations before presenting
our findings with photos and other
materials later in class. I discovered
a lot of new and fascinating things
about the city even though I have
lived here my whole life.

LEARNING ABROAD
Imagine studying art history in
Florence, environmental conict
in Ecuador, or disaster and crisis
management in Japan. Having an
international experience with an
emphasis on global collaboration
will help prepare todays students
for their future careers and provide
a unique perspective of how
cultures interact and aect us all. At
the University of Utah, we believe
that these exciting and rewarding
experiences are an integral part
of each students undergraduate
experience and encourage eachstudent to spend at least one
semester abroad.
The Center for Learning Abroad can
help you choose a program that
complements your studies, provide
information about nancing your
trip, and walk you through the
application process. And once you
return, theyll be there to help you
take the skills and experiences you
gained while away and integrate
them into your studies. They can
even provide the resources for
international jobs, internships, and
volunteer opportunities.

PROGRAM UROP
Inquisitive minds are always
searching to improve the way we do
thingscreating tools and machines
that simplify tasks and lives, and
discovering new ways to treat diseases
or provide care for healthier and
longer lives. Providing opportunities
for our brightest young minds to
engage in these practices means
that students at the U are currently
working on new discoveries today
that will shape our lives tomorrow.
As a tier-one research institution,
the University of Utah is uniquely
positioned to provide research
opportunities to undergraduate
students not available at other
institutions. The Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program atthe U provides entering freshmen
the chance to partner with faculty
members to collaborate on research
or creative projects something
usually only available to graduate
students.
Whether you partner with a leading
professor on a current project or
propose your own ideas and work
with a mentor, youll learn what
its like to sponsor, research, and
plan your project. Just imagine the
invaluable experience of bringing an
idea from just a spark to reality!

MUSE MY UTAHSIGNATURE
EXPERIENCE
How do you connect students withgreat learning experiences across
campus? What is an innovative
instructors magic formula for
inspiring a class or student to make
a discovery in a way they never
anticipated? These are questions
that the MUSE Project (My Utah
Signature Experience) tackles in order
to help provide every student at the
University of Utah the opportunity to
have a truly unique experience.
Through community engagement,
global learning, innovation,
leadership, internships, research,
and learning communities, the
MUSE Project has built a network of
programs, leaders, and outreach so
each student has the opportunity to
have a signature experience while at
the U.
Like the nine muses of Greek
mythology that inspired mankind
in the arts and sciences, the MUSE
Project seeks for every student
to have a profound educational
experience that will shape their
studies and have a positive eect
during their time on campus and
throughout their lives.

Creating an interface between the human brain and technology was once
the stuffof science fiction. Florian Solbacher, a University of Utah engineering
professor, is making connections that transmit brain activity to a computer
a reality today. The research and work hes doing to develop new neural
interface technology could have limitless applications, including developments
for prosthetic limbs, nervous system disorders (epilepsy, Parkinsons, deafness,
blindness, etc.) and countless other fields.
STEP ONE. IMAGINE.STEP TWO. DO.
Being a part of the Business
Scholars and the Student
Alumni Board has opened up my
entire college and professional
experience. I have been
able to travel nationally andinternationally, network with
teachers and businesses, and be
a part of an experience I would
have never dreamed of.

PRESIDENTIALCOMMITTEE ON WOMEN
At the University of Utah we believe
that providing leadership and expertise
in promoting women in their roles

I have felt just as included as every
other student during my time at
the U. There is a strong support
system for women on campus and
I have never once felt excluded.
There are several pre-medicalinstitutions dedicated to women
here, and hundreds of inspirational
female staffto mentor and guide
women students.

The real-world experience and connections you can make in an internship during
college are invaluable. At the U, students in the College of Mine & Earth Sciences are
experiencing graduate-level internship and research opportunities as undergrads at
Shell Oil, Exxon, and SM Energy Company. Research opportunities like mapping the
Salt Lake segment of the Wasatch fault, studying carbonate nodules at a Utah national
monument, or studying the chemical composition of ludwigite, are core to the Us
revamped curriculum because its never too early to start making things happen.

DEFERRING YOURADMISSION TO A
LATER TERM
We know that school sometimes
takes a temporary back seat to other
things in your life, and there may be
a need for newly accepted freshman,
transfer, or readmitted undergraduate
students to defer their start date to
a later semester. The University of
Utah has a newly revised admissions
procedure allowing students to apply
for an admission deferment once
theyve been admitted.
Deferment requests will be reviewed
on a case-by-case basis and may be
granted for reasons including illness,
military service, and humanitarian
or religious service. Supporting
documentation must be provided
with the application for deferment,
and you can defer up to a maximum
of seven consecutive semesters
(including summers).
For more details and information about
deadlines and other requirements, visit
the deferment policy website.
