UBI Global has over the course of five (5) years established a unique member network of university-linked business incubation programs from all over the world. Our mission is to help business incubators, accelerators and direct stakeholders become more competitive and efficient.

We believe that it is imperative to provide a platform for recognition and offer a positive message to the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem of the many great accomplishments that derives from the business incubation community. As part of that, we aim through this publication, to highlight a few of our members’ most successful achievements; the startup companies that made it thanks to the support they received through their incubation programs.

The startups that you’ll be reading about has been provided by the business incubation managers from the UBI Global network. They have been chosen as excellent examples of how success can look like when the startups have a great team, a product market fit, and get the right help from an active incubator.

Throughout the report, we’ve highlighted in total 132 startups from more than 50 incubators representing 21 countries. We’ve also zoomed in to feature nine (9) extraordinary startups that define the word success! As an example, Magnet Forensics - an amazing security company incubated at the Accelerator Centre (University of Waterloo) in Ontario, Canada. Magnet Forensics has been helping examiners and investigators fight crime, protect assets and guard national security since 2009. The startup has grown from a company of 8 employees to one that employs about 100. They won Computer Forensic Software of the Year from the Forensic 4:cast Awards for a record-breaking four years in a row.

The Acongua River in Chile serves the agricultural industry in the Valparaiso region, distributing water through hundreds of acres of land growing high quality food products. The sensors and technological elements that make up the Xplora telemetry system are all controlled via a mobile web platform, allowing real-time management of irrigation channels and gates. On the Acongua River alone, there are 24 gates that were previously manually opened and closed. The Xplora technology has enabled much more flexibility with the irrigation system as well as control of water quality and weather responsiveness. The Xplora technology also includes a flow measurement system as well as PH quality determination, temperature and oxygen content of the water.

Chrysalis, the incubator program of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso (PUCV) was there to lend a helping hand to Xplora during the very early days. The Latam Accelerator Report recognized Chrysalis the 10th best program in Latin America. Chrysalis promotes IT innovational businesses with high productive impact. Chrysalis has a clear social interest to encourage and support those startups that will increase the quality of life in the region.

Chrysalis recognized the promise of an automated system that impacted the local agricultural resources and Xplora was able to demonstrate a high success with this type of technology, which forged a great partnership.

Cell therapy is the next frontier in modern medicine, with its huge potential for curing and treating diseases. Cell therapy uses living cells as treatment. Moreover, the more recently developed genome editing technologies allow for genetically modified stem cells thereby pushing even further the limits of cells as therapeutic treatment. Together cell therapy and gene-modified cell therapy have the potential to drastically change the standards of care and redefine quality of life.

However, the technologies needed to translate genome modifications and transcription factors into medical applications are still limited and currently only rely on the use of viruses and electroporation. While effective in certain cell types, these techniques have proven to affect cell viability, to decrease cell potency and to pose safety and regulatory issues. In the late 1990s nanoparticles of nanoparticles began to develop, Nanoprom developed Polysil, which is one of the product innovations in the field of surface protection, consisting of polymeric (gelcoat and paint), metal, alloy and glass structures.

The first idea to join Nanotechnology, for this newborn company that inaugurates an avant-garde industry, was born in 1997 with the sole marketing of products for the industry. But it’s only since 2006 that Nanoprom, in close contact with multinational companies around the world, decides to create a solid structure and spread across different areas.

The NOMADD is not a cleaning solution developed in mild conditions, naively transported to the MENA region. It is a system designed, developed and tested in Saudi Arabia for the harshest desert conditions. These conditions cannot be properly prepared for without direct exposure throughout the development process. This is where our advantage lies.

The NOMADD captures the spirit of the toughness and re-silience of the desert nomadic peoples, who are perfectly adapted to the conditions, carrying exactly what they need and moving across the desert effectively over vast periods of time. NOMADD is a local solution, designed to suit local conditions, to solve a local problem. NOMADD is the an-swer for the MENA Desert Solar Challenge.

Designed, developed and tested in Saudi Arabia, the Nomadd solution offers a waterless, laborless cleaning solution for harsh desert conditions to maintain solar power efficiency. Without a clean surface, solar panels installed in the MENA region become thick with dust, reducing energy yield by 60% over the course of only one day. Manual labor to free the panels from dust is impossible in 50º Celsius during the day and howling dust storms of the evening. At the same time, water is an expensive, rare and valuable commodity that is not always available for cleaning purposes. Nomadd has developed, at the source, a complete solution no matter the solar panel array size, promising maximum energy output, automated operation with no water or scratching and the removal of an impressive 99.6 percent of dust on the solar array.

The system uses a unique pivoting brush endpoint system and only two direct drive motors with zero exposed components. The solar panels themselves bear no load from the cleaning system, which can be retrofitted or integrated. Operation of the Nomadd system can be monitored electronically to ensure cleaning progress at all times. Nomadd is honored to have been the recipient of the MENA Solar Technology of the Year Award in 2014 as well as the 2016 Association of University Research Parks Innovation Award. In 2017, Nomadd won the SunRISE TechBridge Challenge II, recognizing innovative solutions that contribute efficiency to solar energy. Additionally, Forbes Middle East recognized Nomadd, along with other KAUST start-ups, as #16 on their list of 50 Most Promising Saudi Startups. Co-founder and CTO Georg Eitelhuber is a mechanical engineer native to Australia, who moved to Saudi Arabia in 2009 and became a physics teacher at KAUST, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Georg collected data, got his students involved and created a model to present to Tech Transfer at KAUST, who awarded it a seed fund of $200,000. From there, backing from the Solar Research Center at KAUST refined Nomadd and led it to a $1 million series A funding round. MAA Briquette was inspired by the need to provide an alternative source of energy to reduce deforestation in the area. The initiative involves collection of charcoal dust, maize cobs/stalks and waste vegetable matter from Narok market and the use of these wastes as raw materials. The business uses a locally fabricated kiln that carbonates materials at source.

The raw materials include charcoal dust, maize cobs and waste vegetable matter which are used to make smokeless briquettes which are dried and then sold as fuel. In Narok County, most people earn less than two dollars per day. MAA Briquette therefore seeks to provide an affordable and environmental friendly energy solution. The briquettes burn three times longer than conventional charcoal and are smoke free thus reducing air pollution. With this alternative source of fuel, people are able to reduce on time spent in collecting firewood, resources in buying charcoal and are able to enjoy a clean environment.

The advantages of briquettes as compared to charcoal is that they last longer and are smokeless. Briquettes have helped to reduce deforestation significantly, initially 10 trees would be cut daily for fuel. Currently only 1 or 2 are cut per week. MAA Briquettes joined the NETFUND Incubation program in 2015 through the NETFUND Green Innovations Award.

Kitui Development Centre (KDC) is a capacity-building or-ganization involved in rural development activities geared towards poverty reduction in eastern Kenya.

It plays a significant role in the socio-economic develop-ment since its services target and benefit the poor in vul-nerable communities.

Established in 2001, Kitui Development Centre (KDC) is a small social services organization located in Kitui, Kenya that employs 17 full time personnel. Headed by Janet Mumo, CEO, KDC targets the socio-economic development of over 20,000 poor communities in eastern Kenya. KDC focuses on five development strategies; food security, capacity building, health care, natural resources and job training. In food security, KDC promotes production and marketing among the population to ensure that food will be available and safe. The best example of KDC’s food security strategy is a 2013 project geared toward local poultry production and marketing. This project continues to impact 16,000 people in 3,000 households. Capacity Building involves training of local leaders to build stronger community projects. The implementation of “table banking” – also known as micro-financing, in which groups of community members contribute to a fund that is then loaned to one of their neighbors, to help start a beneficial

enterprise, has proven successful for both investors and recipients as well as the community in general. Health Care needs are assessed for each community by KDC and addressed appropriately including child wellness, sanitation, drinking water safety, reproductive health requirements, HIV and AIDS care, to name but a few. Natural Resource and climate change targets by KDC go hand-in-hand with the other areas of focus, in that climate change can affect food security, health and so on. For this reason, Natural Resource projects by KDC include soil conservation, composting, run-off water harvesting and more. Finally, Job Training focuses on enterprise evaluation, enrichment, introduction in appropriate communities and continuing workshops along with separate, detailed job instruction. KDC’s creation in 2012 of the for profit Kitui Enterprise Promotion Company (KEP), incorporated under the Companies Act (cap.486), specifically founded to process mango juice, concentrate and powder to increase income of local farmers, provides employment to local citizens and perpetuate the self-sufficient community strategy that has long been the goal of KDC. As the incubator, NETFUND has implemented the investment of more than KES 30 Million for the mango processing plant in Kitui among many other environment and agricultural focused projects. In June of 2017, as part of a consortium on climate change, KDC was instrumental in the Kitui County government winning a national award for improved environmental conservation and increased forest cover. Because of this initiative, forest cover has increased to 7 percent, a growth of almost 3 percent overall.

The JRCC Furniture depot (FD) helps people with limited means settle and create a home by providing them with furniture free of charge under our furniture donation program . Those donating furniture can take pride in knowing their gently used furniture is going to those who need it.

The JRCC Furniture Depot is a not-for-profit organization, aiming to give free furniture to families and individuals in need. The warehouse is located in the heart of Thornhill, and its size is 13,000 sq/ft. The inventory includes many furniture items, such as tables, chairs, mattresses, desks, sofas, etc.

The FD accepts donations of gently used furniture. Since 2014, we have given over 12,000 items to families in need. In 2016 alone 6,700 furniture items were donated; while simultaneously diverting used furniture from landfills towards a second use.
