success...“Success is reaching your

goals, knowing you have

done well working for

your goals, and feeling

good about what you have

accomplished. It’s then that

you know you’ve succeeded.

For me, if I work my hardest

and do as well as I can, I’ve

achieved personal success.

I reach success through

the little goals that I set for

myself, like staying healthy

and doing well academically.

Success is also about setting

priorities. A lot of times

I won’t have time to do

everything so I have to

set priorities for what will

matter the most. For me,

it’s just about trying to be

as friendly as possible and

working as hard as I can.”

Dear Friends,

Scholarship America® has been committed to helping students

through scholarship assistance since 1958, when our founder,

Dr. Irving Fradkin, awarded the first Dollars for Scholars®

scholarships in Fall River, Mass.

Since then, Scholarship America has mobilized tens of

thousands of communities, corporations and individuals, helping

nearly two million students receive more than two billion

dollars in scholarship assistance to begin their postsecondary

experiences.

In FY 2008 alone, 123,400 students received $219 million in

scholarships through the delivery of our programs.

Despite our efforts, over a million students drop out of high

school every year, and only one in five is prepared for college.

These figures are even more sobering when considering that less

than 55% of students entering four-year colleges have a degree

within six years.

Scholarship America realizes that access through scholarship

assistance is just part of a student’s journey through

postsecondary education. We know that it takes much more

than scholarship dollars for students to achieve their final

goal—success. Many students, particularly first-generation

college students and students from lower-income/under served

communities need mentoring, academic tutoring, financial

management training, and other support to complete their

postsecondary programs.

Therefore, we have developed a collaborative strategy that focuses on four phases:

Get Ready = Preparation for postsecondary program

Get In = Access to postsecondary institution of choice

Get Through = Successful completion of postsecondary program

Give Back = Scholarship America program “alumni” committed to helping

the next generation succeed

Scholarship America is uniquely positioned to help America’s students through these four phases;

we’ve been mobilizing communities in support of their students for 50 years. Today, more than 4,000

communities across our nation—42,000 volunteers strong—are committed to student success.

[our mission]

To mobilize America through scholarships and educational support to make postsecondary education possible for all students.

[our vision]

We envision a nation where Scholarship America’s leadership enables all students to obtain financial help to improve their lives through postsecondary education.

We must do more to reach students before it

is too late. But we can’t do it the same way we

always have, and we can’t do it alone.

In addition to tapping the potential of our

current networks, we will develop new programs

and service-delivery options that assure students

are prepared for postsecondary education.

We will leverage technology to connect with

students, deliver programs, and collect data

to guide our decisions. We will engage our

corporate clients and partners to embrace the

moral imperative of educating our citizenry.

Education is the number one economic

development issue for our nation—and critical

for its ongoing civic, moral and ethical health.

Scholarship America is committed to raising the

bar in support of student success and assuring a

stronger future for our nation.

We thank you for your continued support of

and commitment to our mission.

Warm regards,

[programs]

Since 1958, Scholarship America has been mobilizing

communities to make postsecondary education possible for

local students. We help communities serve their students

through a variety of program and service offerings—providing

a menu of options that can be combined as needed to meet

the community’s needs, including scholarship programs,

college-readiness programs, and emergency financial aid.

Dollars for Scholars® is Scholarship America’s original, grassroots, community-based scholarship program. More than 40,000 individuals across our nation

volunteer their time and resources to help make postsecondary education a reality for the students in

their communities through scholarship awards and academic support.

The AXA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AXA Equitable,

is the Contributing Sponsor for Dollars for Scholars.

Between 1958 and 2008, 513,668 students received $357,878,888 in scholarship assistance through Dollars for Scholars.

‘‘We really like having a place to go to for questions about scholarships and

legal issues. the dollars for scholars staff has helped me answer some really important

questions. for example, on our scholarship applications we requested students’ social

security numbers; the dollars for scholars staff told us this wasn’t necessary on an

application. We didn’t have to pay an attorney to find this out, because scholarship

america’s dollars for scholars staff has the experience to provide us with the

information we need.’’ Nancy Gifford, Education Together Foundation, Board Member(Junction City, Ore.)

‘‘ Jefferson dollars for scholars helps focus so many students on their ability to go

to college and their ability to plan to go to college. because many of our students are

first-generation college students, they are often expected to cover their own expenses.

a lot of the students tell us that they have to work two jobs to go to school. When they

get funding from us, it really relieves this burden.’’Lisa Conescu, Executive Director, Jefferson Dollars for Scholars

Collegiate Partners®

Collegiate Partners® are postsecondary institutions that support the ongoing work of Scholarship America and the Dollars for Scholars program. Any Scholarship America scholarships—

whether from a Dollars for Scholars chapter

or a corporate program—brought to these

campuses are used first to fill any unmet

student need. If there is no unmet need,

these institutions will use up to $2,500 of a

scholarship to reduce the self-help portion

(loan, work-study, etc.) of a student’s

financial aid package. Some Collegiate

Partners will also match Dollars for Scholars

scholarships up to a specific dollar amount.

42,427 Scholarship America scholarship recipients brought $72.2 million in scholarship funds to Collegiate Partner institutions in FY 2008

‘‘We’ve been a collegiate partner

for years and years. matching dollars

is a great advertising tool for us at

the local high schools and a huge

benefit to our students, because we’re

a private school and tuition is much

higher than state school tuition. every

dollar counts and every dollar we can

provide is a plus for students.’’Caren Richeson, Director of Financial Aid, Oakland City University

in grades 4-12 and their parents prepare for college financially, socially and academically.

‘‘ in 2008, 91 percent of george Washington

Scholarship Management Services® designs and administers scholarship and other education assistance programs for companies, organizations and individuals. Their customized approach to client needs has earned them exceptional loyalty in

the market. SMS currently manages more than 100 programs for Fortune 500 clients.

USA Funds is the premier sponsor of advanced technology for

Scholarship Management Services.

Between 1976 and 2008, 993,352 students received $1,647,597,892 in scholarship assistance through Scholarship Management Services.

‘‘ it’s so wonderful knowing that scholarship management services is getting those

applications in, they’re keeping track of them, and they’re reading them. the volume

that they do—well, there’s no way we could handle that internally. and the quality of

service is outstanding. anything we’ve asked of scholarship management services,

they’ve turned somersaults to do. i’ve never had to wait even twenty-four hours to get

a response from them. it’s very rare when someone says, “We don’t know.”’’Jeanne Mock, Senior Specialist, Community RelationsTarget Corporation

‘‘as a result of our work with scholarship management services, we are now

able to understand in a clear way who our applicants are, through the data that

scholarship management services provides. each year the clarity is even greater

because of the capability of scholarship management services. We also understand

how difficult it is to manage a scholarship program on our own. With scholarship

america managing our program, we don’t have to worry about issues of equity,

accountability and effectiveness.’’ Kyle Malone, Manger of Access and OutreachUSA Funds

Sometimes unexpected personal expenses get in the way of students completing their education.

The Dreamkeepers Emergency Financial Assistance program is designed to help students over these hurdles and assure that they don’t have to choose between their financial emergency and staying in school.

Originally funded by Lumina Foundation for Education as a pilot program and expanded in

FY 2008 with a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation, the colleges implementing this program have

seen retention rates rise, from an average of 51% to 72%.

Between 2004 and 2008, 2,347 students received $1,007,033 in financial assistance through the Dreamkeepers program, with an average grant of $567.

‘‘scholarship america’s dreamkeepers emergency financial assistance program

has meant so much to our students. had it not been for the dreamkeepers program,

we would have lost a lot of students, and they would have lost the opportunity to

continue their education. it has been a blessing to be able to serve our students and

meet their needs with the help of dreamkeepers and scholarship america.’’Mary Cauley, Coordinator for Achieving the Dream, Martin Community College (Williamston, N.C.)

The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund® provides

postsecondary education funding to financially needy

dependents of those killed or disabled in the 9/11 attacks

and rescue efforts.

To date, this fund has distributed more than $32 million to 1,150 students and will continue distributing funds through 2030.

‘‘ if i could talk to the donors who contributed to the families of freedom

scholarship fund, i would tell them that whatever they gave in any amount or in any

form will never be forgotten. it will always be appreciated, because it really did help this

family. it was one of the more important needs that had to be addressed in our family,

and scholarship america was the only organization that had the foresight to think this

far ahead.’’ Eileen Cirri, Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund Recipient

Learning Communities InitiativeThe Learning Communities Initiative is a pilot program in five low-income communities across the United States, with the goal of creating a local culture of learning

in which youth are challenged, inspired and assisted to achieve educational success and access to

postsecondary education.

Through the first four years of this pilot, Scholarship America and USA Funds (grantor) have

learned that:

•School-basedprogramsprovidebestaccesstostudentsandcontinuityofprogramming

•Communityengagementiscriticaltosuccessoftheprogram—suchasanengagedlocalboard

or council to coordinate the program and involvement of local businesses

•Strongprogramandinstitutionalleadershiparevitaltoprogramsuccess

In FY 2009, Scholarship America will provide training and support to help the Learning Communities become self-sustaining, and will establish best practices with the goal of replicating the program.

USA Funds has provided grants for the initiative since 2004 and will continue through 2012.

‘‘one of the greatest things about being a part of the learning communities

initiative is the increased ability to collaborate in our community with the local schools.

this has allowed us to take our partnership to a whole new level of reach and equip

children for postsecondary education. the greatest benefit is to the students who

would not ordinarily consider postsecondary education—now they’re able to get there.

We’re going from an environment of underachievement, to one of achievement.’’Arto Woodley, Jr., President of Frontline OutreachOrlando Learning Community (Orlando, Fla.)

‘‘When we got married on

June 22, 2008, we wanted to give

back to those who lost so much the

day we met. being strong believers

in education and self-development,

we were looking for organizations

that supported families who

were victims of 9/11. When we

discovered the families of freedom

scholarship fund, we knew it was

a perfect fit. supporting this fund

allowed us not only to celebrate

our love for one another but

also to honor and remember the

9/11 victims. We are so proud to

support this fund.’’Lori Mihalich-Levin & Jason Levin Scholarship America Donors

On September 11, 2001, Lori

Mihalich, Rotary Ambassadorial

Scholar, and Jason Levin,

President of the French Rotary

Scholar Alumni Association,

met in Tours, France, in the

Loire Valley at a welcome event

for incoming Rotary Scholars. Lori had just arrived in France days before.

success...“Success is overcoming obstacles that you have in your life. Not

saying to yourself that you can’t achieve something because of certain

things that have happened to you, but taking the extra step or going

the extra mile to achieve your goals and knowing that the outcome

is greater than anything that has come before you, because you have

the determination to make your dreams happen.”
