Success Criteria:
1. I can incorporate appropriate body language for the message to be conveyed
TEK/Objective:
(1)(E): “Identify types of nonverbal communication and
their effects.”
Objective:
Demonstrate understanding of nonverbal communication and it’s components by participating in a nonverbal activity within a group.
Chapter 5: Understanding Nonverbal Communication:
“You cannot not communicate.”
What is nonverbal communication?
A system of symbolic behaviors that includes all forms of communication except words.
The 2 Main Functions of Nonverbal Communication:
A. Relates to verbal communication in 3 ways:
a. Reinforces a verbal message
b. Contradicts a verbal message
c. Substitutes a verbal message
B. Conveys feelings and relationship
Ex. Arms folded to show frustration. Smile to show you like someone
Four Characteristics of Nonverbal Communication:
1. Subconscious: We are not aware of the message we send nonverbally
2. Contextual: it depends on the situation in which it occurs
Ex. What if he was a doctor rushing to the aid of a heart attack victim
Four Characteristics of Nonverbal Communication:
3. Ambiguous (unclear): open to interpretation & often confusing (ex: talking w/ arms folded)
4. Cultural: nonverbal messages can mean something else in another culture (ex: handshake, kiss, eye contact, attire)
Nonverbal Communication to Create a Professional Image:
• Confidence: strong voice, positive attitude, believe in yourself.
• Poise: you can “read” a situation and know how to act appropriately.
• Assertiveness: strong sense of purpose and not afraid to take a stand when needed.
• Immediacy: interacting with others, friendly, approachable.
Kennedy vs. Nixon Debate:
• Observe and identify examples of poise, confidence, assertiveness, and immediacy.

4 Types of Nonverbal Communication
1. Voice:
1. Inflection: rising and falling of pitch that adds variety to speaking
2. Tone: specific vocal quality (rich, harsh)
3. Rate: how fast or slow an individual speaks
4. Tempo: rhythmic quality of a person’s speech (variations in speed)
5. Volume: to be clearly heard and understood by listener’s
2. Body Talk:“what your body says about you”
Your dress, posture, walk (gait), facial/eye communication
Kinesics: use of the body in communication
3. Space Communication:
Space/Distance/Territory : your use of space
a. intimate: touching – 18inches
b. personal: 18inches – 4feet
c. social: 4feet – 12feet
d. public: 12feet – 25feet

4. Time Communication:
• How you manage time is a form of nonverbal communication.
• Everybody has the same amount of time. 24 hours a day.
• How we manage our time reflects priorities and sends messages about your effectiveness as a student, employee, and a communicator
