What is substance abuse?

Any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for nonmedical purposes.

It includes overuse or multiple uses of a drug, use of an illegal drug, and use of a drug in combination with alcohol or other drugs.

Drug Use refers to taking a drug correctly for a legitimate medical reason.

Drug Misuse refers to taking a legal drug inappropriately.

Drug Abuse refers to taking a legal or illegal drug in a way that damages some aspect of the user’s life

Illegal Drugs or Street Drugs Chemical substances that people may

not lawfully manufacture, possess, buy, or sell.

People who use illegal drugs are guilty of a crime called illicit drug use which is the use or sale of any substance that is illegal or otherwise not permitted. This includes the selling of prescriptions on the street.

physical - once it enters the bloodstream it can harm a user’s brain, lungs and other vital organs

overdose – strong and sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug

injection threats (hepatitis B and HIV) mental/emotional consequences (clouds

reasoning and behavior) you lose your values social consequences (negative effect on

relationships)
