Written by Stephen Brown, The Steam Oil Production Company

The development of heavy oil in the UK goes back further than most people realise. All the way back to 1787, in fact. That was when miners struck a spring of natural bitumen while digging a tunnel for the Coalport Canal; indeed, with a little imagination the ‘Tar Tunnel’ might be described as the UK’s first horizontal production well.

The largely brick-lined tunnel was intended to be used for a canal to transport coal from the mines. However, after about 300 yards the workmen had a very minor blowout on their hands as black natural bitumen began to flow into the tunnel. William Reynolds, the local iron master started production straight away, at first around 4,500 gallons of bitumen a week (15 bbls/day) were collected, and for several years over 1,000 gallons a week were being extracted, however this reduced to only 10 barrels a year by the 1820’s until finally in the 1840’s it virtually dried up. The tunnel is open to visitors, as it is part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, and if you go you will see that some oil still oozes into the tunnel today.

Of course, most of the UK’s heavy oil is offshore and while some of that oil was developed in the nineties, it has taken until very recently for the next tranche of the resource base to attract the development capital it needs. Most of the fields that were developed back then, Harding, Alba, Gryphon et al, were quite deep reservoirs, between 5,500’ and 6,500’ feet; that means the reservoirs were warm which in turn meant that oil viscosities were in general quite low, around about 10 centipoise, even though the oil was indeed quite heavy, 18º to 21º API. The outlier in the group, was the Captain field, operated by Chevron, which has a reservoir depth of just less than 3,000’ and an oil viscosity of about 90 centipoise. Production from these fields hit about 250,000 bbls/day in 1998 before starting a slow decline that continues today.

Historical production data from DECC; projection for producing fields based on a simple decline; development & discovery profiles extracted from operator presentations or publicly released documents; Pilot profile - The Steam Oil Production Company Ltd. Timings for Bentley, Bressay and Pilot are all estimates.

All these fields depended upon the new technology of the day – horizontal wells. By drilling horizontally the operators could drill a very long bore through the reservoir and keep the producing section well away from the oil water contact.

The difference horizontal wells made to development economics was dramatic, and most, if not all, of the projects which came on stream in the nineties have been great successes. In all about 2.5 billion bbls of oil in place were developed, about 1.1 billion bbls have been produced so far and the operators expect to produce a bit less than 200 million bbls or so before the fields are abandoned.

Area of bubble is proportional to oil in place. Data from a variety of public sources. Not a complete inventory of all UKCS heavy oilfields

Despite the great success of those projects, it has taken until very recently for a new tranche of fields to be approved for development; but the Kraken project, operated by Enquest, and the Mariner project, operated by Statoil, are now both underway at last. The viscosity in most of these undeveloped fields is well over 100 centipoise, and that high viscosity makes producing the oil that much harder. Just compare the difference in drinking a milk shake through a straw with drinking a coke to understand why.

Bentley is waiting on the blocks, Xcite has invested a lot of money in validating the reservoir performance they expect, and it will be very important for the industry that they succeed in bringing Bentley into production. Bressay nearly made it too, but perhaps we will have to wait for a recovery in the oil price for Statoil and Shell to have the confidence to sanction that project. Adding those two fields and The Steam Oil Production Company’s Pilot field in the mix would mean that the second tranche of North Sea heavy oil projects should deliver over a billion bbls of reserves, and that heavy oil would contribute 200,000 bbls/day to the UK’s oil supply for most of the 2020’s.

Given that UKCS production fell below 800,000 bbls/day in 2013, ensuring that this next tranche of development projects are all implemented will be critical to the future of the North Sea.

Oil & Gas veteran sees more opportunities in low oil price environment

ABIS Projects has won a clutch of contracts worth around £1million over the next 15 months. The oil and gas project services consultancy has secured frame agreements and call-off contracts with ADTI, Hunting, Talisman Sinopec and North Sea newcomer, MOL.

Aberdeen-based ABIS Projects is working with these new clients providing multi-discipline resources covering business strategy, acquisitions, risk, projects and management systems across the supply chain.

Francis Kiernan, who acquired an interest in ABIS Projects earlier this year, said: “With the considerable drop in oil price, the focus in the North Sea once again turns to innovative ways of working which will deliver cost-efficiencies and greater value. A one size fits all approach is no longer sustainable. The ability to take a commodity, whether it be intellectual property, material, goods or supply chain risk and turn it into a value proposition is now required.

The oil price has dropped by more than 25% in recent months and Mr Kiernan said that this is exacerbated by high production costs. “Unit operating costs have risen 62% since 2011. The industry has lost sight of achieving optimal value for minimal cost. We need a much better alignment of cost and value.”

Mr Kiernan, who has been involved in the oil and gas industry for over 30 years, has been through several downturns. He said: “The cyclical economics of oil and gas are nothing new and we are already dipping into a downturn. I reckon we will have three years of challenging times before we get back to the highs of this summer. And these challenges are going to be similar to the ones we faced in the early nineties when the UKCS contracting model changed dramatically, when there was fundamentally a balance sheet transfer from the oil company to the supplier.”

News In Brief....

Harkand on course with new high-spec North Sea-based DSV International inspection, repair, maintenance and light construction company Harkand boasts some of the North Sea’s most impressive and in-demand dive support vessels.

In tune with market needs, the company is now well on track for a new ship to be added to their fleet which will incorporate some of the most innovative technologies available in the sector.

The new DP3 diving support vessel (DSV), which Harkand aims to have working in Europe in 2016 has been designed specifically with the region in mind and will be equipped for a role alongside the company’s two other North Sea fleet – the Harkand DaVinci and Harkand Atlantis.

The US $200 million newbuild from VARD was ordered at the end of 2013 and it holds an option for a second identical ship from the Norway based shipbuilder.

Flexlife announces increased revenue and profit Flexlife, specialist provider of flexible pipe integrity and engineering services for the oil and gas industry, has demonstrated enhanced business growth in its annual results for the year ending 31 March 2014.

This includes an increase in headline EBITDA to £1.034m and a 5% increase in like-for-like group turnover to £14.9m, marking the company’s highest revenue and profit to date.

Aberdeen-based Flexlife, which launched seven years ago, is widely recognised throughout the industry for its expertise and excellence in the integrity and engineering of flexible risers and flowlines. The company’s latest financial results have been driven by an increase in positive cash generation from global operating activities and a 50% increase in client numbers.

CAN Group solutions strike a chord with industry

New business wins and increasing demand for comprehensive asset integrity management solutions within the oil and gas industry contributed to growth in turnover and profit for Aberdeen headquartered CAN Group last year.

Results for CAN Holdings Ltd for the year ending December 2013 show a £16 million increase in turnover and a £2.7 million increase in operating profit.

CAN Group, which supplies engineering, inspection and trades services to the oil and gas, petrochemical and energy industries on a global basis, achieved a global turnover of £89 million and operating profits of £17.4 million, against comparable turnover of £72.9 million and profits of £14.7 million in 2012.

This is largely due to a significant growth in the group’s technical service businesses, ENGTEQ and VENTEQ, as well as new business in international markets in 2013.

Formed in 1986, when it pioneered industrial rope access techniques offshore, CAN Group is now a diversified market leader with distinct business streams including ENGTEQ, VENTEQ and CAN.

These businesses, with a workforce of more than 700 people, provide a comprehensive asset integrity service, spanning integrity engineering, quality assurance and quality control services, inspection, maintenance and access solutions.

Industry priorities including ageing asset life extension and achieving economies of scale continue to contribute to CAN Group’s success despite challenging market conditions for the service sector.

One-off projects also contributed to the increase in turnover during the year.

The North Sea oil and gas industry is facing some challenging times ahead and businesses are wise to the need for work to be more efficient than ever. People are vital to resolving many of the issues the sector is facing, but only if the right personnel are in the right jobs.

Getting the best system to manage and track the competence of staff across an organisation is a simple and effective way to ensure individual employees are competent within their role.

Learning technology solutions provider Atlas Knowledge has developed the Competency Assurance Management System (CAMS) based on direct feedback from a cross-industry advisory group incorporating operators, industry bodies and representation from across the supply chain.

“We identified the barriers to effective competence management were outdated, inflexible and labour-intensive systems which put the focus on the HR function rather than the individual,” explained commercial director Kevin Short.

“We spent 18 months developing CAMS as the ultimate modern day management and tracking system for employee competency.”

Atlas Knowledge could see that the old fashioned paper-based records the industry had been reliant on were laborious to maintain and impossible to move around in the same way the international oil and gas workforce does.

The lines between compliance and competency were becoming blurred and having a detrimental effect on workplace productivity.

CAMS is an exclusively electronic system that has the capacity to manage and track the competence of employees in a simple and flexible way. Based on three key criteria: knowledge, skills and practice; it allows companies to build a background on each

employee’s level of competence and centralise all documentation to one secure place.

CAMS can be accessed remotely as a cloud hosted solution that will offer a heightened degree of flexibility to businesses that are based in several different locations across the world.

“The system not only has the capability to manage and tack the competence of individual employees, it also provides a forum for effective communication, motivation and support,” added Short.

“All data surrounding employees, from training requirement to monitoring staff performance, can be tracked and optimized while at the same time cutting down on administration, travel time, and the time and effort spent by candidate submitting evidence.”

At a time when the oil and gas industry needs to be running at its most efficient, it makes sense for businesses to ensure the very system they put in place to inform their decisions is straightforward and economical.

“A skilled and competent workforce is vital to the health of the North Sea oil and gas industry, in terms of sustaining domestic oil and gas production, ensuring safe operations and supporting the expertise that has developed in this region over decades.

“The days of sifting through paper are gone and assessors need real-time information to manage teams effectively. CAMS allows for greater flexibility and can be integrated with existing HR and Learning Management Systems.

“Significantly, it gives businesses a clear way to demonstrate competence in the workplace as well as help to reinforce the importance of training and consistently developing a highly competent staff within organisations.”

s 2014 was a truly staggering inaugural year for CGI Ltd, an Aberdeen based engineering, fabrication, project management and design business, providing services to the Oil, Gas, Nuclear, Utilities and Renewable sectors.

Early in 2014, Directors Scott Cormack (formerly of Subsea 7) and James Mowat (founder of MTDS Ltd) decided to pull together their considerable energy expertise to establish Caledonia Green Innovation (CGI) as a major force in the industry. The business quickly grew to gain a range of international clients, with 70% of its services going to the Oil and Gas sectors and the remainder to Nuclear, Utilities & Renewables. Further to substantial early contract wins, it quickly became imperative for the business to open a larger production facility with laydown in Caithness to enable them to both bring production & fabrication in-house and grow the scale of their capabilities. CGI were able to secure a significant financial facility with the support of RBS, and the new site was acquired late in 2014, allowing the team

to quickly commence production & fabrication services. With a much larger scope of capabilities and their superb track record CGI won, and have recently completed, several projects with major Tier one Operator and Drilling contractors.

Scott Cormack commented “The added financial facilities have given us the confidence to take advantage of the growth opportunities that are presenting themselves to us. In addition, the funding will also enable us to open a second manufacturing facility in Aberdeen in 2015, near our headquarters this will allow us to respond and react to quick turnaround, fabrication & engineering projects pretty much round the clock.”

Caledonia Green Innovation set to recruit 40+ to their team and expand into new premises in 2015

Scott went on to say “2015 is going to be a huge and exciting year for us, we are expanding the team in all areas of our business from skilled metal workers to operations and management. We know the key to delivering the highest quality and safest service to our clients is the quality of our team, plus a sharp team always works efficiently and clients reap the benefits through a ‘cost effective solutions’ service. As the company enters it’s second major year, CGI as a business is understandably very positive about what the future holds.”

compensated crane for subsea use to 3,000 meter water depth and 1300 square meter of clear back deck space.

Ahead of arrival in Galveston, the Olympic Ares was recently installed with two SMD Quantum MkIII 250hp 3,000 meter rated Work Class ROVs. Each of these high specification Quantum Work Class ROV systems includes SMD’s Extended

Tophat Tether Management System (TMS), telescopic A-Frame, umbilical winch, deck pack and fully integrated control cabin.

Andrew Duncan, President and Managing Director of Bibby Subsea, said: “Taking delivery of the Olympic Ares further expands our capacity for our oil and gas clients in the Gulf of Mexico, and allows us to continue to deliver comprehensive CSV support in this region.

“Welcoming the Olympic Ares follows recent investment in new operations facilities and key appointments into the business, with further asset based announcements to follow. The Olympic Ares will be primarily focused on the US Gulf of Mexico market but will also be available to support project commitments in Mexico, Trinidad and Canada as required and is a strategic step into the deepwater construction market. The vessel deployment further demonstrates Bibby Subsea’s commitment to offer clients in the region a cost effective and efficient alternative to other options currently available.”

The gauge uses multiple echo and single crystal probes in accordance with class society regulations. The excellent performance means that one probe type can be used for all applications, including extremely corroded metal, with no probe zeroing.

The Multigauge 3000 is extremely rugged and built to withstand the harsh conditions of the underwater industry. It has an integral battery with 55 hours runtime on a single 2 hour fast charge. In addition, the gauge can be easily upgraded to a topside repeater by simply exchanging the end cap and all probes have protective membranes fitted to prevent damage from rough surfaces. The gauge is supplied completely ready to use in a Peli case with all the necessary spare parts. As with all Tritex NDT products it also comes with a 3 year warranty and free annual calibration for the life of the gauge.

Seabed Supplies have recently introduced their new range of “Cast Iron” seabed clumpweights. These weights are available in weights of 50 Kg up to 20,000 Kg but the most popular weights are expected to be in the range of 100 Kg up to 5000 Kg.

The idea of casting came from watching a programme on recovering one of our ancient sailing ships and the only things still in pristine condition were the “cast” canon balls which had lain on the seabed for about 400 years.

The advantage of casting instead of fabrication is the ease, cost and consistent quality of manufacturing the units in numbers.

All the weights are cast in the UK at one of England’s most modern Foundries.

The 100 Kg units are already being made in volume and are currently being shipped all over the world.

Sonardyne’s Ranger 2 commissioned for use on world’s largest offshore construction vesselThe Swiss-based Allseas Group, a global leader in offshore pipeline installation and subsea construction, has selected Sonardyne’s Ranger 2 Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) acoustic positioning system for the world’s largest pipelay and platform installation/decommissioning vessel, Pieter Schelte.

Built by Daewoo Heavy Industries in South Korea, at 382 metres long and 124 metres wide, Pieter Schelte is almost as long as the Empire State Building and as wide as London’s Big Ben is tall. When complete early next year, the vessel will be able to lift loads of 48,000 tonnes and has sufficient deck space to deliver or remove a complete topside module and jacket in one trip.

The Ranger 2 USBL system will be used as a high precision independent acoustic reference for the vessel’s Kongsberg dynamic positioning (DP) system during structure installation or pipelay operations when maintaining a steady position is a critical requirement. The Sonardyne system measures the range and bearing from a vessel-mounted acoustic transceiver to a transponder deployed on the seabed or attached to a pipe as it is lowered from the surface. The vessel’s relative position to the transponder is continuously reported to the DP system in order that the vessel can be manoeuvred to remain in the required location.

A key factor in Allseas’ decision to select Sonardyne acoustics for their new record breaking vessel was Ranger 2’s ability to deliver fast, accurate and repeatable position updates in all water depths and operating conditions. This performance comes as a

result of the digital wideband signal technology and Sonardyne 6G hardware platform on which the system is built. As many field developments projects around the world now specify 6G-equipped vessels, Pieter Schelte will be able to arrive at a location and begin working alongside other vessels without any delay or interruption to ongoing subsea operations.

Alan MacDonald, Sales Manager for Sonardyne in Aberdeen commented, “Allseas are a major user of Sonardyne technology and we are delighted that our Ranger 2 system has been chosen for their flagship vessel, Pieter Schelte. This investment reaffirms the robustness, versatility and ease of use that 6G products such as Ranger 2 brings to Allseas’ offshore operations.”

Ennsub has completed the design and manufacture of two innovative workclass remotely operated vehicle (WROV) deployment systems which have been designed and manufactured for ROVOP and are due to be installed into a new build, tier one pipelay vessel early in 2015.

A number of senior figures from the oil and gas industry were given an insight into Ennsub’s DEEP 4000 system recently before visiting its new Teesside premises.

The demonstration showed the equipment’s capabilities, which includes a unique cable handling solution designed to maximise umbilical lifespan, particularly in ultra-deepwater and other high-fatigue applications such as active heave compensation. The system also has a high-speed electric winch with full active-heave compensation, semi-dipping extendable A-frame and transfer skidding system for large tool packages. A new control system and human machine interface (HMI) provides the client with a fully integrated and centralised operating station.

Ennsub’s integrated ROV launch and recovery solutions offer a next generation approach to ROV deployment, particularly in supporting top-tier subsea construction assets where reliability and performance are required.

Ennsub delivers DEEP 4000 deepwater deployment systems

Scott Macknocher, Managing Director said: “We believe this technology highlights our ambition to become a leader in the field deepwater deployment solutions worldwide. The equipment presently under delivery offers a number of novel solutions to many of the current problems experienced by the ROV operating community.

“These include industry-leading umbilical handling, compact deck footprint, reduced hydraulic hosing and many enhanced control features which will have been designed in co-operation with experienced ROV operators and which will reflect the need for safety and reliable operation.”

The company offers a range of deep and ultra-deepwater deployment solutions for ROVs, subsea modules and bespoke subsea packages in addition to a suite of pipeline installation-related products and pipeline repair solutions. It also boasts an operations-led approach to design to suit the specific requirements of its customers.

Earlier this month, Ennsub was awarded a contract worth £2 million by Benthic to build a newly enhanced and portable Launch and Recovery System to complement the latest addition to its seabed drilling and geotechnical drill fleet.

Biggest attendance expected at Subsea Expo, despite drop in oil priceSubsea Expo is now well and truly on the global oil and gas annual calendar. With over 6,000 delegates and 200 exhibitors, it is Europe’s largest annual event wholly focused on subsea and now second only to Offshore Europe in terms of major conferences and exhibitions in Aberdeen.

The conference kicks-off with a plenary session featuring industry leaders from Apache, EnQuest, Proserv and Subsea7 in a debate on current and future challenges. This will be followed by three afternoon sessions on global opportunities, projects and renewables.

Subsea UK chief executive, Neil Gordon said: “With intensified scrutiny on cost and value, standardisation and production optimisation become big ticket agenda items and we will be looking at how our companies are approaching these areas and how they can capitalise on global opportunities.”

The exhibition features companies from across the supply chain showcasing a high concentration of innovation, technology, expertise, skills and knowledge.

The winners of the Subsea Business Awards will be unveiled at the gala dinner on Wednesday evening. The dinner, with its sought-after tickets, has this year attracted over 850 people.

Day two of the conference will begin with a technology R&D panel session alongside other sessions on standardisation and optimisation, pipelines, ROV and inspection and markets and regions. UKTI will also be running their one-to-one IBX (International Business Exchange) facilitating meetings with delegates and experts from key international markets including West Africa, Asia and South America.

Companies can connect with those looking to get into a career in subsea on day three when students and job seekers will get their chance to view the exhibition and attend a special conference session.

For the first time, there will be a spotlight on technology on day three, chaired by NSRI’s project director, Gordon Drummond. During this session, a number of companies will have 10 minutes each to outline new technological developments.

Mr Gordon added: “In the current climate of declining oil price, it was necessary to evolve the theme of Subsea Expo and it will come as no surprise that we quickly opted for driving efficiencies through innovation and technology. The subsea industry is no stranger to overcoming challenges through innovation and I am confident this resilient, dynamic sector will weather the coming storm and emerge stronger than before.”

Despite the drop in oil price, Subsea UK still anticipates one of the biggest attendance ever at Subsea Expo.

“There is much speculation on how much deeper and longer this dip in oil price will go. In recent years, we have seen the cost of production per barrel rise from 20% to 60%. The drop in commodity price coupled with these spiralling costs, is impacting on projects globally and we are in for challenging times with the supply

chain under growing pressure to reduce costs,” said Mr Gordon. “Recalibration of costs and a greater focus on efficiency, while potentially painful in the short-term, will present opportunities for subsea companies who can demonstrate long-term change and efficiency through innovation and technology.”

Two highlights of the exhibition will include the global launch of a new work-class ROV by Forum Energy Technologies and the launch of Ashtead Technology’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

At a press conference on the first day of the show, Subsea UK will outline its leadership role in helping companies through the challenges of a low oil price environment and the National Subsea Research Institute (NSRI) will unveil its technology themes and the industry leaders who will be driving these forward.

Eztek Eztek Limited have recently announced the development of a new software program (The TallyView) to assist in efficient analysis of testing data. The TallyView software allows clients to quickly and easily access the information they need and print out a professional final report without having to manually extrapolate data onto a readable report, which can be time-consuming. When opening a test file, TallyView presents the user with a complete chart, showing all recorded sensor readings with corresponding measurement parameters. With just a couple clicks of a mouse the client can change line details to show just the information they want. The software allows the client to scroll through the timeline as well as stretch or compress the chart. Scrolling over a curve displays the engineering value of that data point and comments can be added on the chart to denote events during testing.

Once the client is satisfied that the data has been arranged in the manner they need, they can then print out an API style report.

The TallyView software, along with the MultiLog workshop data logger, will be on display at Subsea Expo

English BraidsSK99, the higher grade of Dyneema is associated for the reduction in creep (the permanent elongation, under load, over time) within industries where precision matters. However, the long-term benefits of reduced creep, have started to be appreciated by many other industry professionals. In fact, it is the extended resistance to creep that is delivering cost savings through longer life cycles in use. Up until now this has been viewed as a beneficial bi-product rather than a key selling point.

English Braids are looking to work closely with the fibre manufacturer, DSM Dyneema, to help justify the business case for the change of fibre to SK99 to become a standard product. www.englishbraids.com

Charles Cleghorn Limited promote CaviDyne LLC’s CaviBlaster subsea cleaning product line in the UK and Ireland. The company has also undertaken CE accreditation work, thus opening sales into Europe for working actively within the EEU area.

CaviBlaster systems use a patented super cavitating nozzle to achieve outstanding underwater cleaning performance.

CaviBlaster subsea cleaning Water is pumped through the nozzle at precise volume and pressure, and a plume is formed.

When these cavitation voids impinge on the fouled surface they collapse, releasing powerful shock waves that remove all hard and soft marine growth. However no damage is caused to the surface being cleaned, or to any anti-foul or foul release coatings.

Typical pressure for the nozzles is 150 bar, and once the cavitation plume has formed the combination of low density and pressure in the plume effectively removes any hazard to a diver using the system, in stark contrast to conventional high pressure blasters.

Side by side testing of CaviBlaster systems with high pressure blasters have demonstrated that for equal prime mover input power a CaviBlaster will clean a given object in a quarter of the time taken by a high pressure blaster.

CaviBlasters are available for use by both divers and ROVs. The diver guns are provided with a 40% retro jet to ease operability. ROV nozzles can be supplied with up to 50% retro to enable use with the smallest of ROVs. Hydraulic powered units are available for mounting on work class ROVs. The latest developments include the CaviDome, using rotating nozzles to produce an area cleaning capability.

Sealless thermoplastic immersible pumps for open tanks and sumpsTransferring liquids from sumps and open tanks is often regarded as a challenging pumping application due to the presence of solids, the possibility of aeration or foaming occurring, or simply due to the aggressive nature of the liquids being pumped. The new range of ARBO sealless thermoplastic immersible centrifugal pumps are ideal for these situations where metal pumps could suffer from the effects of corrosion.

Available in the UK through Michael Smith Engineers, ARBO single stage immersible pumps can handle capacities up to 300 m3/hr at differential heads up to 80 metres and liquids

with viscosities up to 100 cP. These tough, durable pumps are machined from a single block and as their manufacture involves no injection moulding or welding, they are not susceptible to stress cracking.

The pumps can be supplied in Polypropylene as standard as well as the options of HMPE, PVDF and PTFE for applications where more corrosive liquids, higher temperatures, or higher solid concentrations are involved.

ARBO pumps use a liquid seal with no mechanical parts in the process fluid and this seal design feature, together with the fact that the shaft bearings are outside the pumped liquid and the shaft is self-centring, means they can be safely dry run. The innovative ‘half-open’ impeller design enables liquids with solids up to 4mm in diameter to be handled without damage. This feature also minimises the risk of aeration and foaming occurring, even when circulating in low level tanks.

ARBO immersible pumps are a compact, close-coupled design with the motor mounted directly to the pump flange

The pump shaft is an extended motor shaft which ensures perfect alignment and stability. Most importantly, they require minimal maintenance by virtue of reduced moving parts, compared to traditional ‘cantilever’ type pumps

Typical applications include water sump duties in gas scrubbing systems, acid transfer in galvanising lines and chemical sump emptying in effluent treatment plants.

Hazardous area thread adaptors remove thread conversion issuesHazardous area electrical equipment specialist, Hawke International, has produced a comprehensive range of thread adaptors and fittings to allow their cable glands to be easily fitted to enclosures with dissimilar threaded connections. The factory produced and approved adaptors ensure the integrity of installations is not compromised and remains compliant to international safety standards and approvals.

A typical problem is the incompatibility of threads due to size or pitch when mating up equipment to build critical systems. The new range of thread adaptors will convert to two sizes above the original diameter and an unlimited range of sizes below. Many size and thread conversions are possible. These include elbows for 90 degree connections, male-to-female or female-to-male thread conversions, as

well as in-line unions, earth lead adaptors, breather drains, stopping plugs and other accessories.

Hawke connectors and cable glands are used in offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration and production facilities, in chemical and process industries and in marine applications. These are typically environments that are classed as Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Energy industry infrastructure is produced worldwide, so installers and contractors must frequently adapt equipment to meet local engineering practice or national standards and codes.

Manufactured to the same exacting standards as Hawke International cable glands and connectors, the adaptors use the same high specification materials and ISO 9001 certified production processes.

Tested to the latest IEC/EN60079 standard the equipment is also dual certified ATEX and IECEx.

Hawke International is part of the Harsh and Hazardous Equipment Group within the world-wide Hubbell Corporation. Their products are therefore available from branches and distributors in every major industrial market.

Innovation funding for offshore wind, cable and mooring connectorsConnector specialist First Subsea announced a revolutionary cable connector for offshore wind turbines in 2014. The Hang Off Connector reduces the time, cost and risk associated with offshore cable installation. Unlike traditional hang off devices, the First Subsea Connector provides an instant airtight structural connection to the lower deck, significantly reducing cable installation and termination times.

With the offshore wind industry under pressure to reduce the CAPEX investment needed to deploy offshore wind, the cost of installing foundations, turbines, and subsea cables is under scrutiny. First Subsea has developed a cable connector that enables a leaner installation of array cables, either when installed through a J-tubeless monopile entry point, or a traditional J Tube. It provides a quick and instantaneous structural connection to the monopile’s internal hang-off deck.

Significant Time and Cost Savings

By the industry’s own estimates pre-termination of power cables will cut installation times by 36 hours per cable, with an equivalent cost saving of just under 100,000 Euro per turbine. Pre-stripped cables will contribute significantly to this figure by reducing the time needed to install the cable to just a couple of hours.

First Subsea Wind Turbine cable installation

First Subsea’s hang off connector is assembled onto a factory pre-stripped cable; this can be done either onshore or offshore. The cores are cut to length, protected, and prepared for installation and connection to the distribution board,

effectively removing this element of cable preparation from the offshore critical path. Fewer people are now needed to work on the monopile, stripping the cable and assembling the traditional connector. It also significantly reduces the number of crew transferred from one vessel to another and from vessel to monopile. In turn, eliminating a number of offshore operations and the health and safety risk associated with them.

In the event of damage to the cable, or perhaps a cable failure, First Subsea connector can be readily disengaged and the cable recovered, whilst leaving the cable protection system in place.

Step-change in ease and speed of connection

“The Hang-Off connector marks a step-change in the ease, speed and safety with which cable is connected to the monopile,” says Greg Campbell-Smith, sales and business development manager, First Subsea Ltd. “Shorter installation times reduce the weather window needed for cable installation allowing greater optimisation of expensive offshore vessels and resources.”

“Passive” insulation monitoring devices were considered state-of-the-art until well into the 20th century. These devices, however, only were used for “checking the insulation” of unearthed power supply systems which until the seventies were called “protective conductor systems”. For a long time it was common practice to use these devices in the mining sector.

The breakthrough to “active” insulation monitoring came in 1939 with the publication of a patent for “Insulation monitoring and earth fault display devices for three-phase installations” by Dipl.-Ing Walther Bender. Since then, Walther Bender has been seen as the “father of active insulation monitoring”.

The technology of insulation monitoring devices also developed quickly. Until the 1960s, the technology used was almost exclusively superimposed measuring voltage. But it was not only the measurement technology for insulation monitoring devices which has changed, the nature of the IT systems and applications had also been subject to huge changes. Many new applications have been added. The inverter technology brought attention to possible three-phase faults, i.e. insulation faults behind rectifier elements. A device technology was then developed which was also able to detect device faults behind rectifiers. This was followed by pulse overlay technology, which was eventually superseded by the “pulse superimposition technology”. The EMC wiring frequently required necessitates new measurement technologies for insulation monitoring devices with high system leakage capacitances. PV systems also need to be able to cope with leakage capacitances into the μF range.

Bender celebrates 75 years of ISOMETER® The development of Bender insulation monitoring device always followed these new requirements, and continues to do so. In the future, too, the company will face new challenges with innovation and know-how and continue to lead the field in terms of insulation monitoring.

Jee Ltd to share pipeline integrity expertise at Subsea Expo Jee Limited’s Paul Otway, winner of Subsea UK Young Emerging Talent award 2013, discusses best practice for the management of pipeline integrity by pigging at Subsea Expo 2015.

Mr Otway, a senior engineer at independent subsea engineering and training company Jee Ltd, will draw on his extensive pigging experience to present to an audience of industry professionals at the conference at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 12 February.

Throughout his career, Mr Otway has worked on subsea pipeline design and integrity projects for a range of global operators, with a strong focus on the management of pipeline in-line inspection (ILI) campaigns, having won the Subsea UK Young Emerging Talent award specifically for his ILI work.

Discussing the industry topic, Mr Otway said: “Pipeline integrity is extremely important in offshore projects, particularly as assets age. Corrosion of oil and gas pipelines can result in serious

environmental, health and safety hazards if the integrity of a pipeline or riser system is compromised, making it essential that offshore operators constantly monitor corrosion to determine the condition of pipelines.

ILI pigging is a key tool in identifying the effectiveness of pipeline management. In mature oil and gas regions, such as the North Sea, ILI is becoming increasingly important in verifying the status of ageing pipelines and allowing operational lives to be extended, while in newer regions with more corrosive fluids, it allows operators to assess the efficacy of their pipeline management systems.”

Mr Otway’s presentation will highlight the many purposes of pipeline pigging with particular focus on pipeline in-line inspection during operation, outlining the different threats to pipelines that can be mitigated by the use of pigging. He will also discuss the technologies behind ILI tools, their advantages and limitations, and the principles of operation and defect detection of both magnetic flux leakage

and ultrasonic ILI tools and guidance on how to select the appropriate technology.

Jee Ltd is an independent multi-discipline subsea engineering and training firm. Jee engineers have defined and managed pigging operations across the globe in complex scenarios including deep water, multi-diameter lines and challenging offshore environments, including FPSO vessels.

Royal Navy is an XTRACTA fan! SpanSet’s innovative confined space kit proves a hit with clientsWith many years’ experience working with the shipping industry under its belt, the SpanSet Group has recently launched an innovative new range of confined space kit ideally suited to environments where equipment has to be easy to use, move and store.

SpanSet’s Product Manager James Bradshaw reveals more: “SpanSet has been working with the shipping industry for many years, supplying lifting equipment and height safety equipment to clients such as Shell, BP and the Royal Navy. We have also worked closely with dockyards including Barrow, Rosyth, Portsmouth and Plymouth, offering solutions to on-site safety issues, and so it felt a natural progression to develop the new XTRACTA range particularly suited to this industry.

We used all of our experience and know-how to develop this new lightweight, robust modular system for work sites where access can be difficult and storage space is at a premium. The system allows users to tailor the equipment to the specific issue they are encountering while at the same time reducing the amount of equipment needed on site. Let’s face it, space is always at a premium in these situations and so, of course, is a critical issue. Our system ensured that only a small amount of kit was required to cover all the issues arising.

While the development of a range like XTRACTA is something we have considered for a while, it was our work with the Ministry of Defence – a relationship that stretches back more than 25 years – that was the real catalyst. We were asked to help solve an ongoing problem accessing the deep tanks on

board the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, and the main issues were the difficulties moving the equipment around the ship and the variations of the tank openings. We surveyed each of the vessels individually, identified all of the potential hazards and then suggested a solution.

It quickly became apparent to us that although the ships, tanks and access ladders varied from ship to ship, the solutions always remained the same. We realised we could offer a common solution to the diverse problems found across the fleet.

To prove the effectiveness of our solution we carried out a demonstration on board RFA Orangeleaf, during which we highlighted how the equipment could be used in a number of configurations extremely quickly. Using a compact kit, our team working in the tanks moved the equipment around and easily built it up to suit each task and only had to use a minimum number of items to cover a whole variety of jobs. The lightweight robust alloy construction proved ideal for quick and easy movement around the site, which is what makes it such a viable alternative to traditional confined space equipment or scaffold constructions.

While the demonstration proved to be a big success generally, one of the specific positive comments received from the client was about the guard rail anchor system. This innovative idea – currently

the only patented system on the market that allows you to install a davit arm on a manhole guard for rescue purposes – uses the guardrail that provides protection from the fall hazard as the anchor point for the davit arm itself, effectively solving the two main issues associated with confined space access with just one piece of equipment. It’s an innovation we are very proud of and demonstrates the approach we always take when developing our products: a focus on safety, quality and reliability combined with fresh ideas that continually bring added value to our clients’ work.”

The SpanSet Group is a global specialist in height safety, lifting and securing loads, with 15 operating plants across the world and an international network of dealers. SpanSet UK has been established for over 40 years, and designs, manufactures and supplies height safety, lifting and load control systems.

All SpanSet products are developed to work as part of an overall safety solution – including products, installations, training, implementation, testing and servicing – allowing SpanSet to meet customers’ needs and develop the safest solutions for working at height, lifting and load restraint.

Electric Heating Product Applications for Offshore PlatformsA brief overview of four electric heating applications on offshore platforms such as FPSO’s and Living Quarters. These applications relate to EXHEAT Industrial’s standard products with suitably rated voltages and capacities.

IP66/67 rated space heaters are mainly used in pump rooms, crane cabs, storage areas, personnel areas, wet rooms and living spaces. They operate by air circulating through the product and across the heating element and are fully moisture resistant.

Anti-condensation/enclosure heaters are primarily used in control panels and instrumentation cabinets for frost protection and anti-condensation purposes.

Flanged Immersion heaters consist of a single element or multi elements for Hazardous or Safe Areas. They are used in applications such as hot water tanks, heat transfer, boiler equipment and for pre-heating oil.

Line heaters can be utilised for hot water storage tanks, engine jacket pre-heating, fuel and lube oils, and heat transfer oils.

Crowcon certified to environmental standard ISO 14001 Crowcon - a world leader in portable and fixed gas detection instruments - has achieved certification to the ISO 14001 standard, which provides a framework for establishing, implementing and maintaining an Environmental Management System (EMS).

“Certification provides customers with the assurance that Crowcon’s environmental management system meets international, industry-specific environmental standards,” explains Barry Swift, Crowcon’s Supply Chain Director. “In addition to helping to ensure best practice in environmental management, ISO 14001 accreditation is another element of the Crowcon supply chain team’s journey

in helping deliver the highest levels of corporate social responsibility both within Crowcon and its supplier base.

The ISO 14001 standard encompasses a number of factors which have enabled Crowcon to minimise the environmental impact of its business. These factors include identifying areas where greater emphasis can be placed on reducing the use of resources and energy, as well as increasing the efficiency with which Crowcon manages waste. The standard also requires legislative awareness and compliance, in addition to on-going monitoring and control of the company’s environmental impact, now and into the future.

“Crowcon’s focus is on supporting a safer working environment for our customers’ employees, so it is only natural to extend that level of commitment and care to the wider environment,” Barry concludes.

SST delivers tool detection alarm for safer well interventionSevern Subsea Technologies (SST) has developed Zone 0 rated, tool detection sensor technology to reduce the risk of damage to the riser assembly during drilling and intervention operations, as the tool string is recovered to the surface.

The Tool Detection Alarm (TDA) offers a safer method of locating the tool string than relying on visual methods alone. It positively locates the position of the tool and sounds an alarm, alerting the winch operator to take action to prevent the tool string hitting the riser seal head. The portable, battery-powered TDA provides an extra layer of protection minimizing the risk of damage to completion equipment and potential loss of the tool string down the well.

The whole system, including the control

box and re-chargeable battery, is ATEX and IECEx certified intrinsically safe equipment for use in Zone 0 gas environments.

Brian Green, SST managing director, said: “The Tool Detection Alarm provides a safe method of monitoring a tool string during well intervention operations. Knowing when action needs to be taken will prevent damage to completion equipment, avoiding unnecessary disruption to production.”

Severn Subsea Technologies is the Subsea Valve R&D Centre for control valve engineering specialist, Severn Glocon Group. SST specialises in the research and development of subsea valves, DCVs and HIPPS; HPHT downhole tools, stab plates, smart intervention tools and

advanced camera systems for oil and gas exploration and production applications.

Kongsberg presents PulSARKongsberg Maritime has introduced a new tow fish side scan sonar for use in Search and Recovery (SAR) missions as well as underwater inspection, engineering and scientific surveys.

Developed by Kongsberg Geoacoustics, PulSAR is designed for intuitive operation and easy deployment by non-specialised personnel, enabling effective short-notice surveys using vessels of opportunity.

The PulSAR system acquires high resolution acoustic images of the seabed using a compact, rugged stainless steel tow fish that is operated with a water protected (IP66) deck unit and small cable hand reel. The system can be deployed on small vessels such as open RIBs.

Large areas can be surveyed efficiently revealing small objects and structures in great detail. PulSAR operates in a frequency range of 600 kHz to 1 MHz and both FM and CW source signals can be selected in order to optimise the range and resolution for the given survey task.

“With quick and easy deployment and high survey performance, PulSAR is an ideal tool for Search and Recovery, where the ability to act quickly is vital to a mission’s success,” comments Helge Uhlen, Product sales Manager Underwater

Mapping, Kongsberg Maritime. “It is a versatile solution that can also be used for underwater inspection and engineering surveys without large overheads for survey platforms and survey specialists. The high resolution achievable with the system results in seafloor maps with detail that may form the basis for scientific investigation in areas such as marine geology and geophysics as well as marine archaeology.”

PulSAR is battery or mains powered, using 24 VDC or 110/230 VAC. It has an integrated GPS system that provides positioning information with SBAS

differential corrections and an external positioning system can be connected via a serial port.

The system is delivered with a dedicated software package to be run on a laptop computer connected via Ethernet to the deck unit. It allows the user to plan and conduct the survey and acquire sonar data with embedded positioning information. The data can be processed, visualised and interpreted in the software package and exported in industry standard formats to third party packages for further use.
