Multidimensional poverty methodologies can be used to targetaspects of poverty like education and sanitation

Professor James Foster recently traveled to Cape Town SouthAfrica to give a keynote address to leaders and academics workingon shaping policy reforms that better target poverty Sharing hiswork on multidimensional poverty measurements Professor Fosterexplained how looking through different lenses of poverty can helpleaders identify the social programs and policies most needed intheir economic development agendas Professor Foster spoke inJuly at this Poverty and Social Impact Analysis (PSIA) event inCape Town South Africa hosted by the World Bank that broughtpolicymakers academics civil society representatives anddevelopment partners together to find ways to bridge the gap FromEvidence to Policy with innovation The World Bank hosts frequentlearning events that provide a venue for local policymakers tointeract with economists find ways to better measure their countrysdevelopmental success and create new pathways to reform

Using traditional headcount ratios economists and governmentseffectively cherry pick the richest poor and often fail to look deeplyenough at 3 major dimensions of poverty education health andstandard of living Even if global monetary poverty were todisappear this would not signal an end to poverty Fosterexplained In actuality approximately 16 billion people aremultidimensionally poor - meeting 33 or more of theMultidimensional Poverty Indexs indicators Incorporating importantfactors like deprivations basic social services and human andsocial rights leaders like those participating in the Cape Townlearning event can better identify the areas in which governmentsmust target poverty and coordinate policy changes

As Foster outlined incorporating these new criteria into policyagendas will require the resolve and determination of developingcountries themselves His trip to Cape Town was just one in aseries of trips Professor Foster and Sabina Alkire his co-author increating the Alkire-Foster Method have taken to interact withnational governments regarding their poverty-fighting strategies

In the past months Professor Foster has several to meet withleaders and help them incorporate the Alkire-Foster Method intotheir development agenda Sabina Alkire Director of the OxfordPoverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and IIEP facultymember has taken similar trips to work with Latin and SouthAmerican nations regarding their understanding and adoption ofmultidimensional poverty measures In nations like Colombia theAlkire-Foster method has been used to reduce the MultidimensionalPoverty Index (MPI) and target aspects of poverty like healthcareeducation and other public services Between 2011 and 2015more than 4 million Colombians were lifted out of poverty

In September Foster and Alkires book on multidimensional povertyand analysis will launch in the United States The opportunities ourfaculty members have to reach out to development strategists andpolicymakers across the world are remarkable and their researchcontinues to make lasting impacts on the international fight againstpoverty and other areas of international economic policy

will discuss how public andprivate sector leaders canuse natural resources toboth impact the bottom lineand benefit society and howecosystem services andnatural infrastructure canenhance cities andneighborhoods The panelwill bring diverse policybackgrounds to the forumchallenging conventionalthinking about theimportance of environmentalresources and economics askey tools in creating asustainable world

In the past months Professor Foster has several to meet withleaders and help them incorporate the Alkire-Foster Method intotheir development agenda Sabina Alkire Director of the OxfordPoverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and IIEP facultymember has taken similar trips to work with Latin and SouthAmerican nations regarding their understanding and adoption ofmultidimensional poverty measures In nations like Colombia theAlkire-Foster method has been used to reduce the MultidimensionalPoverty Index (MPI) and target aspects of poverty like healthcareeducation and other public services Between 2011 and 2015more than 4 million Colombians were lifted out of poverty

In September Foster and Alkires book on multidimensional povertyand analysis will launch in the United States The opportunities ourfaculty members have to reach out to development strategists andpolicymakers across the world are remarkable and their researchcontinues to make lasting impacts on the international fight againstpoverty and other areas of international economic policy

will discuss how public andprivate sector leaders canuse natural resources toboth impact the bottom lineand benefit society and howecosystem services andnatural infrastructure canenhance cities andneighborhoods The panelwill bring diverse policybackgrounds to the forumchallenging conventionalthinking about theimportance of environmentalresources and economics askey tools in creating asustainable world
