Job’s Daughters Bethel 85 of Shakopee held its installation of officers at the Minnesota Ma- sonic Home on June 9. Bethel #85 is comprised of girls from Carver, Scott, Dakota and Hennepin counties. Kellie Seberson of Chaska was installed as Honored Queen, which is the presiding officer. The installation ceremony was conducted retiring Hon- ored Queen Polly Price in the Landmark Room. Honored Queen Seberson chose the Rose Festival narration for the instal- lation. Her colors are yellow and teal, her flowers are yellow roses and daisies & her mascot is the Rubber Duck. The following girls were in- stalled: Honored Queen Kellie Se- berson; Sr. Princess Alicia Vitali, Jr.; Princess BriAnna Magnuson; Guide Toni Holdshoe; Marshal Katie Holdshoe; Recorder Ash- ley Bican; 4th Messenger Cassi Magnuson; 5th Messenger Polly Price; and Inner Guard Alyssa Walstrom. STEPS (Science, Technology and Engineering Preview Sum- mer camp for girls) is underway for the eighth year at St. Thomas. About 160 girls participate in the free camp each summer, according to a St. Thomas press release. The girls attending the St. Thomas program this summer live on campus and take classes in plastics, electricity, machining, computer-aided design, assembly, Web design, chemistry, physics, engineering and robotics. They create their airplanes from start to finish: using a hot- wire saw, they cut wings from sturdy Styrofoam; assemble the fuselage; cut, bend and install aluminum parts for the rudder and elevators; thermoform the canopy; and finally decorate and cover the plane’s exterior. They also log computer time with a flight simulator to become familiar with the remote-control devices they’ll use to fly their planes, the release stated. Sullivan wins in ad design Brandon Sullivan, a graduate student from the Carver-Scott Ed- ucational Cooperative’s Graphic Communications Program, was awarded the first place medallion in the Advertising Design Com- petition at the annual National Leadership and Skills Confer- ence and SkillsUSA Champion- ships, held in Kansas City, Mo., on June 28. All contests are run by and judged by industry using in- dustry standards for employ- ment. Over 500 industry judges participated this year. The advertising design competition was sponsored by Hallmark Co., and Brandon received a $20,000 scholarship to The Art Institutes International, according to a co- op press release. All winners receive medal- lions and frequently receive tools of their trade and/or schol- arships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA Champion- ships is for high school and college-level students who are members of SkillsUSA. More than 5,000 students from every state and three territories com- peted in 87 contests in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations this year. In order to qualify for the national competition, the students competed in local and state contests. The state gold winners advanced to the national SkillsUSA Championships. The Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative sent six students to compete at the national competi- tions in the areas of advertising design, photography (7th place finish), cosmetology (finalist), prepared speech and nail care. Career and Technical Educa- tion at District 930 is designed to provide in-depth career explora- tion, competencies that may be transferred to post-secondary vocational schools, entry-level job skills and lifelong learning skills.
