Subordinating Phrases

Before you begin subordinating it is helpful to do a few things:

1. Make sure you have read the passage several times through. You should have done this even

before splitting the passage into propositions

2. Try to identify all the main subjects and verbs. This will help during the subordinating process

3. Ask questions to discover which word(s) each subordinate phrase/clause is modifying. Asking the

5Wh questions (who, what, where, when, why, how) will usually tell you what is being modified

4. TAKE YOUR TIME! We are studying Scripture and need to slow down. It’s okay for it to be a long

process

following the prince of the power of the air,

the spirit that is now at work

in the sons of disobedience

3 among whom we all once lived

in the passions of our flesh,

like the rest of mankind
