Shaping the Crowd

Identity, openness and new ways of learning.

Pippa Buchanan (@pipstar)

education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated

knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education

Learning is acquiring new or modifying existing knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing

different types of information.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning

...creating, using, adapting and improving open educational resources; embracing educational

practices built around collaboration, discovery and the creation of knowledge...

The Cape Town Open Education Declaration, September 2007

The Open Education Movement:

Open Learning

Learning opportunities that are:● Participatory and collaborative● Learner driven● Free / accessible● Transferable and recognisable● Adaptable to learners' requirements● Low barriers to entry

Why is open learning important?

In knowledge-based economy, those who have the lowest levels of skill and the weakest capacity

for constant updating are less and less likely to find paid employment.

Access and Opportunity

What happens when our elders can't teach the knowledge, skills and values we need today?

Responsive to Future Changes

We live in a changing world.

The skills and knowledge we need can't be transferred by education.

We have to learn that ourselves.

What should I learn? How should I organise this study?

How can I track what I learn? Who and what do I learn from? How do I share my knowledge?

How do I afford this? How can I get this learning recognised?

When we learn we change.

Education is life: 'not merely preparation for an unknown kind of future living... The whole of life is

learning, therefore education can have no endings.'

Eduard Lindman, The Meaning of Adult Education, 1926
