Their Excellencies Baron Christopher &Baroness Miana

by L. Fionnghuala Feuterer

Greetings all! Wow, for a quiet month Aprilsure was busy! First We went to the Waste-land Wars in Windale where our Baronyshowed such an impressive presence, thescheduled peasant’s revolt never even start-ed! Bane Gunnar rustled a sizable herd ofcattle for Her Excellency, and the Ered Sulintelligence network ferreted out some hei-nous crimes. A very productive day for ourBarony!

We had our first Officer’s Workshop wherewe all worked on job duties and goals andbrainstormed on many ideas which We andOur officers will be putting into practice inthe coming months. We hope to do anotherin June to work with those officers whocould not make it to the first one. Everyonewill be glad to know (and none more gladthan Bane Gunnar and Banthegn Saeunn)that all the Baronial Stuff is now inventoried, organized and stored in strategic depotsthroughout our lands. We found many sur-prises we’ll be unveiling throughout the year(we own one of these? Really?).

On the artistic front, we held our first BardicWorkshop night. We all learned some thingsto improve our performances while still hav-

ing a great time. M’Lady Thorasa evenwrote a piece on the spot and performed it!We hope she’ll have it perfected for all of usto hear at Yule. Also, Lady Grainne taught ascribal workshop. It was extremely educa-tional and entertaining. It’ll be awhile beforeany of us can start cranking out scrolls (otherthan crayon), but at least we can start practic-ing.

We are looking forward to the 3 (count ‘em3!) Northern events in May so we can see allthose friends we’ve been missing sinceAurora’s Feast. That means you! See yousoon!

In Service,Baron ChristopherBaroness Miana

To the populace of Ered Sul,

This month we have another wonderful‘Getting to Know You’ article by GryThordis. Also, we have significantly reducedthe number of chronicles being printed byrequiring a ‘re-subscription’ form. I will beincluding a copy of this at the end of eachchronicle so that new people may sign upagain for the printed version of this publica-tion. Perhaps someone might see a friendwho remarks ‘Hey, where did my HigherWord go? I didn’t receive one again thismonth!’ In this case I would ask that thosewho are receiving the printed version tearout the form and hand it to your friend sothey can re-subscribe. Always I will take sub-missions of articles, art and musings.Your missives, event advertisements, sto-ries, articles, lower words, and song lyricsare due to me by the 20th day ofthe month. Please be mindful that the publicationgoes to press the first weekend after the20th. Delays in submissions may cause atmost a 7 day delay in publication soplease be courteous and submit EARLY!

As you read this issue please take note of anyerrors. I greatly appreciate any correctionsthat come my way. The best way to contactme is by email [email protected]. My

cell phone is another good way to leave amessage, 928-607-8653. I promise that I re-turn calls.Yours in service,

If you've ever been interested in the art ofhistoric sword play, now is the time to findout more! There are several opportunities tolearn to fence here in Ered Sul. And Now for SomethingCompletely Pontifical…And Now for Something Completely Pontif-ical…

The SCA is sometimes referred to as a game,a hobby, a martial art, a family, or even a wayof life. While those ARE the things thatmake it so wonderful, we must also remem-ber that underneath it all, the SCA is in veryreal fact, a Non-Profit Corporation. It isOur job, and Our officers’ jobs, to supportand enforce the corporate rules while stillproviding some insulation so that most folkscan just have fun. That said, We feel that byunderstanding the corporate side, it is easierto understand why some things must bedone certain ways. This month we’re goingto focus on the downside of being a compa-ny - what are the problems we’re trying toavoid.

One huge fear for any company in today’ssociety is the threat of lawsuits. Anythingwhich significantly increases those chances istherefore frowned upon, such as fire arts orgunpowder. This goal also drives a zero tol-erance policy for any activities that aredeemed illegal by modern law. Anothermechanism used by every company thatsponsors interactive entertainment (go karts, skydiving, fighting) is waivers. This is whywaivers must be collected for any event andany fighter practice and then kept on record(7 years for adults, 20 years for minors). This is also why we must be absolutely mili-tant about the policies regarding youth activi-ties.

Another goal for any company is good PR(public relations). By controlling its publicimage a company can increase goodwill to-wards it, increase customers and limit legalexposure. Bad PR can get a company no-ticed by lawyers and watchdog groups thatsee it as a good target. Because PR is by def-inition free publicity (a blog, newspaper arti-cle, news feature, you tube movie), thecompany does not have direct control overwhat is written or shown. Therefore, theonly way a company can “control” PR is to

Page 7: submission deadline is the 20th each month - Barony of Ered Sul · 2008-11-13 · May 10th 2008 Bushmaster Park 3150 Alta Vista (Alta Vista & Lockett Road) Flagstaff Az 86004 Greetings

7

try to make sure the company is always on itsbest behavior. This is why we now have spe-cific media policies, certain language must beused in any publication (including Yahooposts), and flagrantly bad behavior is not tol-erated. This is also why it is imperative foranyone in a position of authority within theSociety to be constantly aware that whatthey say and do is immediately public record.

Right next to legal risk and bad press is thethreat of audit or losing non-profit status. Inall corporations, being able to accuratelytrack your cash and assets is actually moreimportant than making money in the firstplace. All corporations are required to filesignificant financial records to many govern-ment agencies. All corporations must filetaxes, including tracking depreciation of as-sets. And non-profit corporations are putunder more scrutiny than for-profit becauseof their special status. Now, imagine the in-credible difficulty when the SCA, Inc. goesto file its taxes and has to reconcile the fi-nances (including receipts for cash advancesand reimbursements). Every shire, cantonand Barony has to be accurate and perfect, rolled up to the kingdoms and the kingdomsrolled up to the corporate level. Suddenly, itmakes sense why we all must use the sameforms and follow the exact same proceduresevery time.

So, the next time you consider the waivers, event forms, warrants, handbooks, policiesand financial forms please take a moment torealize that these are not “busy work” putthere to get in the way of having fun. With-out these things the SCA would not exist.

Baron Christopher
