July and four of those clubs updated that earlier filing with another MMR before the end of themonth. Excellent work. Here is another good one for secretaries filing the District Achievement:Mention the word “Barrett” in your e-mail with the August report and your club will receive twenty-five bonus points. Just checking to see how many of you read my message. August 30 to September 5 is the week of the Children’s Dignity Week. It would be great if allof the cubs in the District could dedicate a project to our children during that week. See the flyerlater in the KV for more information.

Please join me in welcoming 14 new Lions to the District; one future Lion, Barrett Alan Shef-field, born in July to Lions Brandie and Steve of the Northampton Lions Club, but keep in yourprayers the families of five Lions that passed away in July.

Tucker Casanova1st Vice District Governor

Hello Lions!

Are you looking forward to the Fall Conference? The Casanovas are. The first Fall Confer-ence I attended was at the Holiday Inn off of Newtown Road in Virginia Beach . . . This is goingback five years or more. It was the first time I met many of you and really started to learn aboutLionism. Not just from the classes, but by spending time with you, the Lions of 24-D. As youthink about it, remember your attendance is what makes these conferences work. The more at-tendees, the better the event, always. Consider spending the night, even if you’re local … hotelrates are reasonable, especially if we are able to prove that we, as an organization, can guaran-tee that when we show up for an event, we will fill up a large chunk of rooms. You would be sur-prised how far that gets you.

In fact, now would be a great time to invite a family member or friend. I’m not saying takethem to a class … that would be a huge mistake. Look into hospitality rooms, take them to thebarbeque. Introduce them to Lions, to other Lions, to me! Too many times I see guests, pro-spective members or otherwise, set off in a corner either by themselves or with the one personthey know with virtually no interaction with the club other than an introduction. Give them achance, get to know them. We’re all adults, it’s not hard, when you meet someone new, just askthem where they work and let conversation happen. (Pro Tip: the hardest part is just listening)I’m a lucky guy, in a lot of ways conversation comes easy to me. Also, working for the EyeBank? Well, that’s a heck of an ice breaker.

Feel free to put me to work, bring your friends, just tell them, “You see that guy? Just wait un-til you find out where he works!”

I’m looking forward to meeting them.

Yours in Lionism,

Lion Tucker C

Accept the Challenge

It’s an exciting time to be a Lion! For nearly 100 years, Lions have served their communities andimpacted millions of people around the world. It will take many hands to meet our CentennialService Challenge. So let’s gear up and meet the Centennial Membership Challenge too! TheCentennial Membership Awards recognize Lions and Lions Clubs that contribute to membershipgrowth during our Centennial Celebration. These Lions and Lions Clubs can earn special recogni-tion based on their efforts in two categories:

1. sponsoring new members

2. chartering new clubs

The Awards program began on April 1, 2015 and will end on June 30, 2018. Any new memberssponsored or clubs chartered during this time will count toward Centennial Celebration Member-ship Awards recognition. However, the new members must remain active for a consecutive year.Once a member drops for any reason, the sponsor cannot receive credit for that new member.Lions who sponsor a new member receive a “limited edition” Centennial Sponsor Pin and Centen-nial Sponsor Certificate. Items will be distributed in Lions Clubs International’s New Member Kits.Lions who help organize a new club receive a “limited edition” Centennial Club Organizer Pin andCentennial Club Organizer Certificate. Items will be mailed to the District Governor. There are alsoProgressive Centennial Lions Awards for Centennial Sponsors and Centennial Club Organizersand will be based on the amount of time the new member or new club remains active. After a Lioncompletes the actions listed below, they automatically qualify to earn progressive levels of Centen-nial Lion Awards: Silver Centennial Lion – Earned once the new member/club remains in goodstanding for a consecutive year and a day. Silver Centennial Lions will be recognized for theirachievements receiving a “limited edition” silver pin and recognition on the LCI Centennial website.Gold Centennial Lion – Earned once the new member/club remains in good standing for twoconsecutive years and a day. Gold Centennial Lions will be recognized for their achievementsreceiving a “limited edition” gold pin, recognition on the LCI Centennial website and recognition atarea forums, MD and district conventions.

Diamond Centennial Lions will be recognized for their achievements re-ceiving a special “limited edition” pin and certificate, a photo featured on LCI Centennial website, rec-ognition at area forums, MD and district conventions, recognition at international convention, andfeatured with fellow achievers in LION Magazine.Centennial Sponsors and Centennial Club Organizers will receive one award of the same type. Forexample, a Lion who sponsors multiple new Lions will receive one Silver Centennial Lion Award whenthe first new Lion they sponsor stays for a year and a day. However, a Lion who sponsors a newmember and helps charter a new club can earn a progressive level award for both. Once the newmember and new club stays a year and a day, the Lion is eligible to receive the Silver Centennial LionAward for both.

Centennial Lions Club Awards and RecognitionTo become a Premier Centennial Club, a club must 1) Induct at least three (3) new members dur-ing a fiscal year during the Centennial Celebration, and the new members remain active for two yearsand a day, OR 2) Sponsor a new Lions club during the Centennial Celebration and the new club re-mains active for two years and a day. Centennial Clubs with each club sponsoring at least three new members during the next three years.

Centennial Service Campaign2015-2016

Lions of 24D, the first quarter of the year is ENGAGING OUR YOUTH in the Centennial ServiceCampaign. This is when our District is involved with the Youth Camp, vision screenings, formingLEO Clubs and other youth activities.

Just do one of these this quarter to complete one of the four Challenges for this Lions year. AndREPORT it through MyLCI Service Activities Report [SAR].

What I ask each club to do is plan ahead to complete one service activity each quarter in each ofthe Challenges. Then, by June 2016, you will have completed the 2016 Challenge and earned aFour Diamond banner patch. It really is that easy.

As you all know, the goal of LCI is to complete 100 Million acts of Service by July 2018 – the endof our Centennial Celebration. The gift of the Lions of the World to the less fortunate of the world. We Lions of 24D are part of this gift.

If any of you have a problem filing the SAR and marking the activity as a Centennial ServiceChallenge, please let me know and I will guide you through it. I will be tracking the SAR reportsand each Quarter I will summarize our District’s progress.

Congratulations to the 36 clubs that completed all four Challenges last year and qualified for theFour Diamond Patch, and to all the clubs that participated in the Challenge! Our District had over80% of the clubs participating in 2 or more Challenges. We would like to see 100% of the clubsdocumenting their participation this Lions year.

Completing the Centennial Service Challenge in all 4 categories is easy if we plan ahead and reportwhat we do. I am confidant that every one of the clubs in 24D completed the challenge last year, but some just did not report in the SAR.

Lion Hauser Weiler, PID

LIONS CHARITY FOUNDATION of District 24D, Inc.2014-2015 YEAREND REPORT

The Lions charity Foundation of District 24D (LCF 24D) continues to provide financial support to Lionsclubs throughout Southeastern Virginia to meet community needs for charitable, scientific, literary oreducational endeavors. The Board of Directors consisting of at least one elected Zone Director fromeach of the nine zones and at least seven elected Directors at Large plus the ex-officio District Gover-nor guides operations on behalf of the Clubs in the district. The Foundation is funded through individualdonations, contributions from Lions Clubs, Good Samaritan Fellowships, interest on investments andcurrently our largest fund raising activity, the Bid ‘N Buy Auction.

Your Board of Directors and especially the Grants Committee has been extremely active this past LionsYear and I would like to name just a few of the areas in which your monies were allocated: the Founda-tion received twenty (20) Grant Requests, approved eleven (11), two withdrawn, two denied and fivegrants currently under review. These grant requests were presented by the Lions Clubs of Southeast-ern Virginia. A sample of the grants includes the following:

Eye Surgeries $8,400 Tornado Relief Eastern Shore $3,800Eye Exam/Glasses for Eastern Shore $5,000 Norfolk Homeless Connect $5,000Barrier Island Pre-School Program $10,000 Williamsburg Retina Camera $7,000Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Boy Scouts $1,900

In addition to the grant requests, 22 District 24-D Lions Clubs submitted 58 grant requests for 112 hear-ing aids. We have had twenty-one (21) Clubs participate in the hearing aid program and your CharityFoundation has purchased 38 hearing aids at a foundation cost of $18,705. Thanks to the negotiationskills of Lion Jerry Phelps, we now have 4 suppliers for hearing aids – one in Williamsburg, one on theEastern Shore, one in Norfolk and one in Virginia Beach.

Our Indigent Cataract and Prosthetic Eye Program headed up by Past Council Chair Lion Stan Furmanhave been coordinating various care centers throughout the area. This committee has referred patientsfor 6 Ocular Prosthesis for $4,500.  These services are valued at $18,000.00. The committee furtherreferred 9 Cataract Surgeries to Hampton Roads Eye Associates and 8 to EVMS Sentara Hospital for atotal of 17 surgeries at a cost to the foundation of $8,700.  These surgeries are valued at $85,000.

Your Lions Charity Foundation has provided financial assistance totaling over $77,000 this year. Theimpact of these expenditures is approximately $300,000 thanks to our partnerships with generous pro-fessionals and organizations who provide skills and services to our clients at greatly reduced rates.LCF 24D belongs to the Lions clubs throughout Southeastern Virginia. We should be very proud thatwe are the only district in Virginia to have a Charity Foundation support our community service. OurBoard of Directors sincerely appreciates the generous contributions and support of our Lions Clubs.

All Lions clubs can ensure our ongoing success in one of the following ways:· Honor an individual or organization who exemplifies our “we Serve” motto through the Good Sa-

maritan recognition program· Make a financial contribution on behalf of your Lions club
