When in doubt, you can phonetically write your answer BUT the answer must

adhere to the Irish spelling system. Make sure you follow the rules below:

The Vowels are incredibly important in Irish for Spelling AND Pronunciation

5 Vowels (A E I O U)

Broken down into two groups

Leathan (A O U also called Broad) and Caol (I E also called Slender)

These Broad or Slender vowels impact your spelling and pronunciation. Irish is a very

regulated language. When connecting sounds in Irish always try match leathan le leathan

(Broad with Broad) and Caol le Caol (Slender with Slender).

e.g -Suim iúil -Áis iúil -Múin teoir -Bia lann -Pictiúr lann

There are two types of -S in Irish (again depending on broad or slender)

S + (i, e) = -sé -sí -sibh -siad -Seán -Sinéad

S + (a, o, u) = sa, san, staidéarach

Ever wondered why we say -Leabhar with a -w but Bhris with a -v ? It comes down again to

our Broad (A O U) or our Slender (I E).

dh (slender) = y (mí Dheireadh Fómhair)

B. Léamhthuiscint

To date, there seem to be four types of questions from the State Exams in this section.

It is imperative that you try avoid the wording the Reading Comprehension at all costs. Have

a vocabulary journal and when you come across another word for dáinsear (such as contuirt

or baol) you write these in.

In this section you want to show the examiner you have a) understood the comprehension

and b) have enough vocabulary to write your own sentences.

They nearly always require two points of information. Use your highlighter so you don’t forget

or miss any points/ marks.

If you see ‘dar leat’ or ‘do thuairim uait faoi sin’ the make sure you use ‘dar liom’, ‘ceapaim’,

‘sílim’ or ‘measaim’ in your answer.

1) Treithe/ Cas an duine (or: eagraiocht/ comhlacht)

This is the trait or characteristic of a person/ company. Look at the exam example:

Bunaithe ar an eolas sa sliocht thuas, luaigh dha threith a bhain le (NAME of PERSON), dar

leat. Aimsigh sampla amhain de gach ceann den da threith sin sa sliocht (Bíodh an freagra, i

d’fhocail fein. Is leor 60 focal).

You must state Trait 1 followed with evidence from the text. Then, Trait 2 followed by

evidence from the text. The marking scheme is as follows:

T1 will be used for Treith 1 (2 marks) & S1 used for Sampla 1 (marked out of 4) T2 will be

used for Treith 2 (2 marks) & S2 used for Sampla 2 (marked out of 4)

Here is a sample layout:

• I mo bharuil phearsanta, ba bhean mhisniuil chroga í Niamh Ní Dhomhnaill (T1 = 2 marks).

Bhí creideamh ollmhor ag Niamh in Eirí amach na hEireann. Throid sí go buan ar son na tíre.

Ceapaim go raibh sí croga mar bhí sí reidh chun troda agus chun dul chuig a bás fein. Gearradh

bPáras nuair a bhí sí og. Fiu, nuair a phos sí, chaith sí a lán ama ag peinteáil. Chuir sí na pictiuir

2 Cen fath ar scriobh an t-udar an sliocht / aidhm an udair

This is asking us why we think the author wrote the article or what was their reasoning

behind the article. A simple question, really. Here is our exam example:

Bunaithe ar an eolas sa sliocht thuas, dean ple, i d’fhocail fein, ar dha chuis ar scríobh an t-

udar an sliocht seo. (Is leor 60 focal)

(Based on the text, give two reasons why the wrote it)

C1 will be used for Cuis 1 (2 marks) & T1 used for Tagairt 1 (marked out of 4) C2 will be used

for Cuis 2 (2 marks) & T2 used for Tagairt 2 (marked out of 4)

Here is a sample layout:

Spreagadh an t-udar seo chun an t-alt seo a scriobh mar ba mhaith leis comoradh a

dheanamh ar an gcead duine a bhí ar an ngealach (C1 = 2 marks). Deanann an t-udar

cur síos air agus ar an chead lá a shiuil se ar an ngealach. Insíonn se duinn go raibh se

croga chun cos a chur ar an talamh agus go raibh se rud beag imníoch chomh maith.

Eachtraíonn an t-udar faoin gcead chos a leag se ar an talamh. Cuireann an t-udar an

ráiteas in iul chomh maith (T1 = 4 marks).

Anuas air sin, theastaigh on udar a leiriu duinn go raibh eacht mor deanta aige (C2 =

4 marks). Ní raibh se furasta taisteal a dheanamh i dtreo na gealaí. Bhí constaic le sáru

ag an gcine daonna. Bhí orthu an bealach a oibriu amach go dtí an ghealach. A luaithe

is a rinne siad sin, bhí orthu eadaí a chur in ord. Bhí cuid mhor oibre i gceist ag an tus

(T2 = 4 marks).

Use these Acceptable Phrases

Dar liom scríobh an t-udar an sliocht seo chun níos mo eolais a scaipeadh faoi ... (I think the

author wrote the passage to spread more information about)

Sílim gur scríobh an t-udar an sliocht chun ______ a thaispeaint duinn (I think the author

wrote the passage in order to show us _________)

Measaim gur chum an t-udar an sliocht chun _________ a chur in iul duinn.

(I think that the author composed the passage in order to present us with ______)

that information was being shared by the author about.....)

(The aim of the author was to show to the reader that there were changes in....)

Weaker Answers to try avoid

Tá suim ag an udar sna huimhreacha (The author is interested in ....) Is maith leis an udar

uimhreacha / dátaí / fíricí (The author likes...)

3. Conas a chuaigh an sliocht i bhfeidhm ort

This is important as it is asking ‘how the passage affected you”. Be very careful with your

answer and remember to change the ‘ort’ to orm in your answer or else you will not get any

marks. Take a look at the exam example:

Conas a chuaigh an sliocht seo i bhfeidhm ort? Tabhair dha phointe eolais i d’fhocail fein, as

an sliocht, mar thacaíocht le do fhreagra (Is leor 60 focal)

Be careful with this type of question. First and foremost, the influenced part must be

addressed clearly. This is then followed up by TWO points of information in bullet point form

or clearly numbered. It will be marked as follows:

T will be used for Tuairim (2 marks). P1 (marked out of 5) & P2 (marked out of 5) will be used

for Points of Information. Lay it out as follows:

Chuaigh an sliocht go mor i bhfeidhm orm. (T = 2 marks)

Acceptable ways to Start:

Chuir an sliocht me ag machnamh ar an oidhreacht agus ar thábhacht na hoidhreachta

culturtha ... (The passage got me thinking about heritage and the importance of heritage)

Mhuscail an sliocht mo speis in ábhar na hoidhreachta ...

(The passage awakened my interest in the subject of heritage....)

Thug an sliocht leargas dom ar an mbaol atá (a bhí: for past tense) ann maidir le ... (The

passage gave me an insight into the dangers of....)

Chuir an sliocht ar mo shuile dom ce chomh dainsearach is atá.... (a bhí: for past tense) ...

(The passage informed me about how dangerous ....)

4) Stil Scribhneoireachta

This one can be a little confusing, but it is just asking us what genre we think the passage is.

Have a look at the exam example and again, always be mindful of that ‘dhá threith’ or ‘two

characteristics’:

Cen cineál (genre) scríbhneoireachta lena mbaineann an sliocht seo? Luaigh dha threith a

bhaineann leis an gcineál seo scríbhneoireachta. Aimsigh sampla amhain de gach ceann den

da threith sin sa sliocht. (Bíodh an freagra i d’fhocail fein. Is leor 60 focal).

C will be used for Cineál genre (2marks) or the type of genre

T1 (2 marks) for treith plus S1 (3 marks) for samples from the text T2 (2 marks) for treith

plus S2 (3 marks) for sample from the text

If there is no ‘Cineal Scribhneoireachta’ mentioned, then everything else in your answer

will be marked as zero.

I will accept the following as genre of writing and give 2 marks.

Pick the relevant genre and lay out this information as following

Now that you have told me this is a ‘tuairisc’ or a ‘piosa iriseoireachta’ or a ‘sliocht

faisneiseach’. I want two traits (T1 & T2) of what ‘jounralistic’ writing is (this is easier than it

sounds) and two samples of it from the passage (S1 + S2). Here is a sample answer:

Is píosa iriseoireachta e an sliocht seo (C = 2 marks)

Tugtar cur síos duinn ar shaol an udair (T1 = 2 marks). Insíonn an t-udar duinn gur

rugadh Seán i mBaile Atha Cliath ar an gcead lá de Mhí Eanáir. Chaith se bunus a

shaoil i ndeisceart Bhaile Atha Cliath i ndeas don Aerfort, áit ar fhoghlaim se a cheird

(S1 = 3 marks)

Tugtar cuntas duinn ar na blianta munlaitheach an duine (T2 = 2 marks). Eachtraíonn

an t-udar duinn go bhfuair Seán a chuid scolaíochta i scoil Phríobháideach i

Acceptable Traits

There must be a continuous link between the title that is chosen and the subject that is written.

This was not adhered to and pre-learned material was clearly chosen that had no link with the

title. This happened especially in the case of Aiste A (b) Scannail sa Spórt and Aiste A (d)

Ceannairí Polaitiúl sa lá ata inniu ann. A lot of essays were written about sport in general

without any references to scandals. The same was for (d). A lot of material was brought in

concerning the state of the country and the world without mentioning any world leaders. It

was very clear that students did not link the title with their subject. It was very clear in some

cases that there were weakness’ regarding appropriate vocabulary, misuse of the copail (Is/

Ba and students used ‘Ta’), Bearlachas (Duirt se slan), a lack of understanding with the tenses,

with réamhfhocail (le, ag, leis) and with the aidaicht shealbhach (mo, do, a, a). There were

also cases of spelling not adhering to the structure of Irish (leathan le leathan Caol le Caol)

I would highly advise my students to make sure their input is going to maximize their gain. What I

mean by this is, are you putting hours into studying poetry which will only ever yield you 6% (no

matter how perfect, how well developped)?

If you have 1 hour and 45 minutes on a Monday night, then this should be dedicate to the oral worth

40% to you. If you have 1 hour on Wednesday night, then dedicate the Essay to this slot. If you have

45 minutes on Friday, then this should go on your 4F (An Triail) and if you have 30 minutes Saturday

and 30 minutes Sunday, these slots should be dedicated to your Poetry and Prose. Work Smarter!
