Total Hours Required 39 Total Hours Required 39

Total number of hours required for degree 39-60 Total number of hours required for degree 39-57 *Applicants who enter the program with all 500-level foundation coursework or equivalent courses completed (18 credit hours for the M.B.A./Business Analytics specialization) will be given “advanced standing” and will only need to complete the 39 credit hours of advanced course work. An applicant who has not completed any business coursework will have a 57-credit hour program of study (M.B.A./Business analytics). Applicants who have completed some of the foundations coursework, either at USD or as part of their undergraduate program, will have an individualized program of study outlining their requirements for program completion. Challenge exams are available.

7. Explanation of the Change:

Reduction in total hours of required foundation courses from 0-21 to 0-18: We propose removing one foundation course. The rationale is as follows. The MBA Business Analytics specialization does not require BADM 523 – Foundations of Information Systems as a foundation course. Students are not required to have the baseline knowledge that BADM 523 offers as the information is covered early on in BADM 723 Data Management and Warehousing. The Instructor of Record and the Chair of the Department support removing BADM 523 as a required foundation course for the MBA with a specialization in Business Analytics. The excision reduces the maximum foundations course count from 7 to 6 and maximal credits from 21 to 18. The credit-hour totals range from as few as 39 to as many as 57, depending on how many foundation credit hours the student needs.

7. Explanation of the Change:

The Department of Computer Science proposes the addition of a specialization in Artificial Intelligence (submitted with this request). The M.S. specialization will utilize new and existing coursework within the current Computer Science graduate curriculum. Artificial Intelligence is one of the most vital and fast-growing fields within Computer Science, with impact in every stratum of society. As such, providing expanded programs in Artificial Intelligence will help prepare current and future USD students to meet workforce needs in the state, region, and beyond.

The admission requirement for teaching experience and licensure is being removed (2020-2021) as the Division of Curriculum and Instruction wants to open up their graduate level programs to a wider audience. There are settings that don’t require licensure or traditional K12 teaching experience for teachers and the School of Education wants to meet those needs. For example there are organizations looking for people with pedagogy and curriculum development experience to assist in developing training tools. The graduate level programs in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction can meet those needs. 7. Explanation of the Change:

The addition of an accelerated option will allow advanced students who have been admitted to the Master’s program to begin the M.A. in Elementary Education with a specialization in either Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach or Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Learners during their final year of undergraduate study. Undergraduate students who qualify for and are admitted to the accelerated program may register for graduate level classes (500, 600, and 700) and these credit hours may apply to both undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. The intent is to create a 30-credit degree with an accelerated track that allows seamless integration into a graduate degree program. The proposed rotation is to offer on-line coursework in a 12-15 month rotation that would lead to completion of the degree. IAM statements have been removed due to the termination of the IAM program in 2019.

An accelerated graduate program for the purposes of this guideline is a graduate program at a Regental institution that allows a student to count courses for undergraduate and graduate credit simultaneously. Board Policy 2:8 – Level and Numbering of and Enrollment in Courses governs the transfer of courses between the undergraduate and graduate program. Board of Regents Policy 2:5 – Transfer of Credit requires the Board of Regents to approve accelerated programs involving the transfer of thirteen (13) or more credits up to a total of twenty-five (25) total transfer credit hours at the accepting institution. In other words, an institution may create an accelerated program of one (1) to twelve (12) hours without Board approval. However, an accelerated program requires the creation of coding by the Enrollment Services Center (ESC) regardless of whether or not the accelerated program is accepting more than twelve (12) credit hours.

1. Maximum number of credits allowed to transfer between undergraduate and graduate program: 12

2. Is the response to Question 1 more than thirteen (13) credit hours? Yes ☐ (requires BOR approval)

No ☒ (does not require BOR approval)

Special Education; B.S. Ed. Elementary Education & Kindergarten Education; or B.S. Ed.

Elementary Education & Early Childhood Education) to apply a portion of those credits to the M.A. Elementary with the Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach specialization program. Undergraduate students can enroll in the graduate sections of the courses once they have completed the minimum 90 undergraduate credits required by the BOR. Electives will be considered on a case-by-case basis for eligibility as long as the number of credits transferred is no greater than 12. The following restrictions apply: a. Dual-listed courses taken at the 500-level can be applied to both the B.A./B.S. and M.S. degrees. Dual-listed courses must be taken at the 500-level. b. 7. Explanation of the Change:

The University of South Dakota is proposing 4 new Specializations. Specializations are offered in the areas of Pediatrics, Neuroscience and Rehabilitation, Mental Health, and Rural/Underserved practice. Development of focus areas or Specializations allows the USD Occupational Therapy program to distinguish itself from regional competitors and to provide students with the opportunity to develop additional knowledge and performance skills within an identified area of practice. The specializations are optional. Students who choose not to complete a specialization will adhere to the original core curriculum coursework of 114 credits.

7. Explanation of the Change:

The addition of an accelerated option will allow advanced students who have been admitted to the Master’s program to begin the M.A. in Secondary Education with a specialization in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Learners during their final year of undergraduate study. The changes listed above enhance the competitiveness and effectiveness of our program by better aligning us with research-based practices and the needs of educators in the region and the nation. Proposed program content will reflect CAEP accreditation requirements and provide an in-depth, high quality educational experience for our graduate students.

President of the University Date

3. What is the proposed date (day/month/year) the accelerated program would begin?

Fall 2020

4. Please provide a brief explanation of the accelerated program, including specific courses eligible for both the undergraduate and graduate program credit.

The accelerated program will allow students who have worked toward the minor in K-12 English as a New Language to apply a portion of those credits to the MA program with a specialization in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Learners. Undergraduate students can enroll in the

The proposed changes are to reduce options (combinations) from three to two – option one for students who are seeking an endorsement/certification and option two for students who are not. The changes should clarify the advising process and credentialing process; and make it easier for students to select the program that best fits their needs and career objectives.

7. Explanation of the Change:

The INTS curriculum has not undergone a serious review since the creation of the major in 2002. Since then available courses at USD and the focus of the major have evolved. Additional history-

based and culture-focused courses have been added. Business and economic courses have been eliminated because of significant prerequisites that make finishing the INTS major in four years very difficult, and that knowledge would be better acquired through an ECON minor or major. In order to make the graduates more competitive, the modern foreign language requirement has been strengthened. Students will have speaking and reading/writing capabilities in the first foreign language and an introduction to a second language that can be built on in the future; this is especially important if working for an international non-governmental organization, attending graduate school in international studies, political science, history, or anthropology, and certain types of work in the American government. Finally, the INTS 400 Senior Seminar/Capstone was no longer achieving what was originally intended. It is not an appropriate vehicle of synthesizing the major nor focusing on the skills that would be most helpful to students. Additionally, cross-listing required adaptation of the coursework and requirements that failed to appropriately serve INTS, POLS, or CJUS majors., it is proposed that INTS 400 be modified to a one-credit course, consistent with its current description, which allows for a focus on research and writing a single significant piece of work. Second, it does not take a faculty member away from a course that may have a higher enrollment.

7. Explanation of the Change: The proposed addition of KSM 482 to the Kinesiology & Sport Management curriculum will provide students with a more in-depth look at the theory behind Strength and Conditioning, along with more hands-on experience. By providing this class, which focuses on theory and application, we are filling a void within the program. This will make the Exercise Science specialization more complete and satisfy the interests of more students, especially those who are interested in the field of Strength and Conditioning, Sports Performance, and Personal Training.

7. Explanation of the Change:

POLS 101 Introduction to Political Science will be a new requirement for all Political Science majors. It will introduce students to the full discipline of Political Science by including foundational ideas from International Relations, Comparative Politics, American Government, Public Policy, and Public Administration. In the course of introducing those subfields, Methodology and Political Theory will also be incorporated. This will better prepare the majors for introductory courses in the subfields—POLS 100 American Government, POLS 141 Governments of the World (Comparative Politics), POLS 250 Introduction to International Relations, POLS 226 Public Policy, and POLS 320 Public Administration) and subsequently moving into upper-division electives. POLS 101 will serve as the gateway course to the major and students should take the course during their first year as a Political Science major. It is designed neither to become a General Education course nor as a replacement for POLS 100 American Politics; POLS 100 is limited to the study of the American experience and represents the introduction to one subfield of Political Science while POLS 101 introduces students to the discipline of Political Science. Additionally, in order to remain up to date within the field of political science, and utilize the expertise of the Department, students will now take either Public Administration or Public Policy as a required course. The study of public policy has gained more importance in the field and the subfield reflects the expertise of the Department. Moreover, to ensure that students have a broad representation of their major field, students will take at least one upper-division course in the following three areas: American Politics, Public Policy/Public Administration, and Comparative Politics/International Relations.
