What is Citation Style?

In the academic and scientific world, citation style sets a standard for documenting the scholarly resources, both print and online, that are used in published research

There are many different styles that are used in the humanities, social sciences, and science

The APA, MLA, University of Chicago, and Turabian are examples of different styles

The two most used styles are the APA and MLA styles

APA Citation Style

APA style is a product of the American Psychological Association

It is used in the social sciences and sciences to standardized the formatting of published research papers and for documenting references.

The latest APA style requirements can be found in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition

APA Citation Style

APA Citation Style is based on an author/date in-text parenthetical reference system

First, a reference to another research article is embedding into your text (usually an author and date)

A recent study (Smith, 2010) determined that chocolate has high levels of....

Smith (2010) determined that chocolate has high levels of...

APA Citation Style

Next the full citation to the reference is placed in your references list at the end of your paper

Smith, S. (2010). A study on the nutritional value of chocolate. Journal of Cocoa Studies, 45, 123-134.

MLA Style

MLA style is a product of the Modern Language Association

It is used primarily in the humanities to standardize the formatting of published papers and for documenting references.

The latest MLA style requirements can be found in the The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition

MLA Style

MLA style also uses an in-text parenthetical reference system

However the difference is that MLA mostly uses author name and page number to create a reference

In the 19th century, the wives of sea captains often accompanied their husbands on long sea voyages, challenging the Victorian ideals of domesticity prevalent at the time (Duneer 224).

MLA Style

Example with author in text

Duneer studied the sea voyage diaries of sea captains’ wives and found that they challenged the ideals of domesticity in the 19th century (224).

Which Style Should I Use?

Check your class syllabus to see if a particular style is required

If no style requirement is listed, ask your professor which one he/she prefers

If the choice is yours use the one you are most familiar with

If you are not sure, ask a librarian for help
