DA

LE

hough I possess many amazing talents,

foretelling the future isn’t one of them. But I’m

pretty confident that by the end of the season

Dale will be in a respectable position, somewhere in mid-

table, and not hanging on by their fingertips above the abyss

of relegation. It’s just a prediction because at the time of

writing there are still 14 matches to go – and football’s a

funny old game, as they say.

My biggest fear at the start of the campaign

back in August was of a yawning gulf in skill

and tactical savvy between us brash newcomers

and our more illustrious League 1 opposition. I

certainly didn’t want to see us humiliated –

outplayed and outclassed by teams with a better

pedigree and more money to spend.

But I needn’t have worried. There hasn’t been a

visiting team at Spotland (bar one, which I’ll

come to later) that has made Dale look as if

they didn’t belong at this higher level.

Our early run of form was pretty good, capped

by a superb display in front of a crowd of

18,000 at Southampton, with skipper Gary

Jones sealing a 2-0 win with a fantastic 25-yard

strike. Then the see-saw started to tilt the other

way. October and November were bleak in

every sense of the word, with wins hard to find.

During December there wasn’t a single game

played at Spotland due to bad weather and the

state of the pitch – which brings me to a very

sore subject for Dale fans. Over recent seasons

we hoped and prayed the poor drainage

problems had been solved by the work

undertaken. Apparently not. Two massive

games – Charlton and Southampton – were

postponed because of a waterlogged pitch,

which means a substantial loss of revenue for

the club. Charlton were set to bring over a

thousand supporters, but we’ll be lucky to see a

tenth of that number for the mid-week fixture

at the end of March.

There’s also the frustration felt by players and

fans alike that while other games in the region

go ahead, we can’t seem to get our act together

at Spotland I don’t wish to be harsh, but

something needs to be done – and soon. We

urgently need a proper plan of action and a

concerted effort by everyone involved to sort

this out once and for all. The fans deserve it,

and it’s only fair to the players to give them a

decent surface to play on.

After the disappointing end to the year, the see-

saw tilted once again – this time in our favour.

Starting on New Year’s Day with a victory over

Tranmere, Dale were unbeaten for eleven

games on the trot! The first defeat of 2011 came

at home on 5th March.

I said earlier that one team in particular was the

exception, and it was MK Dons who showed us

what clinical finishing is all about. Despite Dale

being much the better team in the first half,

with at least six decent chances, we failed to put

the ball in the net. And of course paid the price

– from only four attempts on goal, the Dons

scored three times. Final score 4-1 to the

visitors.

With tough games coming up against Brighton,

Southampton, Bournemouth and

Peterborough – all riding high in the league

and battling for promotion – this is a real worry

for Dale. It tells a sorry tale when your leading

goal-scorer is a mid-fielder – Jones on fourteen

– and your strikers aren’t producing the goods.

Even Chris O’Grady, by far our best player, has

only notched up eight so far.

As Nick Smith in the Rover used to say – “It’s

Goals that Count!”n

Popular Salford-born actor, Jason Done, has many credits to

his name, but is probably best known for playing English

teacher Tom Clarkson in Rochdale-based BBC series

Waterloo Road.

I recently caught up with Jason to discuss his character’s

complicated love life, winning a National Television Award

and fatherhood both on and off screen!

www.rochdalestyle.com6

How did you first get into

acting?

I took part in Oklahoma at my school

and really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed

drama at school, as I had a very

eccentric drama teacher! It just seemed a

brilliant way to be creative, as well as

being able to mess around and burn off

energy. It was great for meeting girls

too! And for showing off! I hasten to

add my passion for acting has since

evolved from those very basic reasons!

What did your own

school reports used

to say?

‘More than capable but plays

to the gallery!’

How would you

describe your

character, Tom?

We’ve certainly seen him

grow up over the last few

series. Tom was always a bit

wreckless and a bit irresponsible really. I

think he started to mature after Izzie was

killed and he had the girls to look after.

And I think now he’s become quite a

selfless and morally sound person. In

reality, I think he would be an excellent

and inspiring teacher.

He’s had quite a complicated

and sometimes tragic love life.

Will there finally be a happy

ending?

Oh his love life is a disaster! It’s a

running joke that he’s always been the

kiss of death, quite literally in some

cases. Whenever he got together with

another girl you knew the end was nigh!

Fortunately, I think the series has now

focussed more on his abilities as a

teacher, than as a partner. And recently

he’s concentrated on being a better dad

to Josh, so he hasn’t really had time to

focus on a relationship.

What has been your favourite

storyline since Waterloo Road

began?

I loved the very first few episodes,

where he was in complete turmoil

because he was marrying the wrong

woman. He was marrying Lorna, but

was actually in love with their mutual

best friend Izzie. So he ended up

marrying Lorna and snogging Izzie on

the wedding night!! It was this great

first storyline which initially drew me to

the project.

JasonStyle Exclusive

Waterloo Road actor

Done

Page 9: STYLE-SPRING-2011

What is your favourite storyline

coming up?

We’re filming so far in advance, that I

honestly lose track of what’s happening

in the current series! But it’s safe to say

that the series will always have a

healthy balance of comedy and pathos.

Regarding Tom, it’s not all doom and

gloom thankfully. I don’t want to spoil

things for the viewers, but there will be

a lot of ups and downs in Tom’s life and

never any shortage of drama!

The series won most popular

drama at the National Television

Awards in January, beating

Doctor Who, Shameless &

Sherlock! What was it like to

collect the award?

We were all dumbfounded and pretty

speechless! It was voted for by the

public, so we’re just so appreciative of

everybody’s support. We all had a

brilliant evening and feel immensely

proud. And I even got to meet one of

the Chilean miners in the process, which

was great.

Why do you think series has

become so popular?

I think it has found its feet really. When

it first started, the content was arguably

a little grittier and darker. But I think it

is now something that the whole family

can sit down together and watch. I think

it has storylines that all generations can

relate to and appreciate.

Are you planning to stay at

Waterloo Road?

I think it would be foolish of me to

leave the series, whilst I am still

enjoying it and getting great storylines. I

feel very proud to be a part of it and I

think the programme is going from

strength to strength and seems to be

increasing in popularity.

Do you watch yourself on

television?

I hate watching myself on tv, it’s very

odd! I do sometimes watch it though

because it’s important to see how scenes

have turned out, so that you can improve

on them. But I cringe watching

myself… I’ve put a few pounds on shall

we say… too much catering food on set!

So i’m concentrating on trying to look a

bit sharper for the next series!

What are you up to at the

moment?

I start filming Waterloo Road again at

the end of May, so i’m doing a few other

things at the moment. I’ve been

narrating some documentaries and doing

a few radio plays. I’m also making a

documentary about Belle Vue Aces

Speedway team in Manchester, who are

the oldest and most famous Speedway

club in the world; i’m documenting their

attempt to relocate to a purpose-built

stadium.

So you don’t really give yourself

a break in between filming?!

Well I try not to relax too much. Make

hay whilst the sun shines! But we’ll

have a little holiday too.

Congratulations on recently

becoming a dad! How are you

finding fatherhood?

It’s sensational and without question the

best thing that has ever happened to me!

It’s life-changing in the most

magnificent way.

INTRODUCING VALLEYACUPUNCTURE

Valley acupuncture was set up by Louise Crewe in 2010 after

she gained a BSc honours degree in Acupuncture following 4

years study of western and Chinese medicine. Louise has a

background in nursing and is a fully insured member of the

British Acupuncture Council which is the UK`s largest

regulatory body for traditional acupuncture and whose

members adhere to high standards of education, ethics, safe

practice and professional conduct. More details can be found

at www.acupuncture.org.uk

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into

specific points on the body. Some people turn to acupuncture

for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose

to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a

preventive measure or to improve their general sense of

wellbeing. Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the

whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it

can be effective for a range of conditions.

Once part of the Akrington Hall

estate, Alkrington Nature Reserve is

an area of mature woodland,

providing an ideal habitat for a wide

range of flora and fauna. Informal

paths take the visitor through

woodland along the banks of the River

Irk and around the fishing lodges at

Rhodes.

The town also boasts some award

winning parks and picnic spots.

Heywood’s Queen’s Park received the

People’s Choice Award last year, for

becoming the nation’s favourite Green

Flag park. It’s packed full of things to

do, with a lake, activity centre, visitor’s

centre, café, tennis courts and plenty

of bird life. Hollingworth Lake

Country Park is another popular

location and a great day out for all the

family. Last year, it was voted the

North West’s favourite picnic spot as

part of a national search, conducted by

breadmaker Warburtons.

A host of countryside fun and action

packed events are lined up to celebrate the

International Year of Forests – so why not

check out what’s on offer! For local event

listings turn to THE PREVIEW SECTION.

Councillor Terry Linden, Cabinet Member

for Environmental Services said: “One of

the borough’s true assets is its wealth of

spectacular countryside and woodland…

Our countryside rangers and friends

groups have been very dedicated in putting

a programme of countryside events

together…These events are a great way for

people to interact with their local

countryside so they can truly appreciate the

wonderful environment that surrounds

them.”

Ruth Meredith

The Rochdale borough has a wealth of spectacular

countryside to explore, with beauty spots such as Healey

Dell and Alkrington Woods. Healey Dell Nature Reserve

sits in a picturesque part of the Spodden Valley, rich in

wildlife, with delightful scenery, spectacular waterfalls and

a fascinating archaeological history. A disused railway line

is now a nature trail, with magnificent views from a 100-foot high viaduct.

If you love the fresh air and the great outdoors then

make a date with the borough’s beautiful countryside

and woodland this spring! There has never been a

better time to start exploring, with 2011 being the

International Year of Forests; a United Nations

campaign to celebrate people’s action to sustainably

manage the world’s forests.

Since 4th January 2011, the lower half of Drake Street has been

one-way for traffic, whilst work is carried out in preparation for

the Metrolink coming to Rochdale town centre.

Traffic is able to travel up Drake Street from the town centre,

but for traffic coming down Drake Street a diversion operates,

with traffic being redirected along Molesworth Street.

The diversion and one-way system is in place for

approximately four months, whilst utility companies re-route

their services away from the route of the tram lines. During

this period Drake Street businesses are very much open for

business as usual.

With this in mind there has never been a better time to

shop local and help these well established businesses.

Drake Street is home to many speciality shops, including the

town’s only photographic & binocular retailer, Pennine

established gift shop, offering the customer a wide array of

high quality gift choices. Opposite, you will find Denis

I had never been on one before, but had

seen groups walking in York and London. We

met our guide, a Victorian undertaker, in the

warmth of the Baum pub on Toad lane and he

then took us to the side of the graveyard at St

Mary’s in the Baum, for our first chilling tale

of the evening. The Half Moon Horror was

just that, a true horror story about the murder

of a bride on her wedding night, in Rochdale

in the 1850's.

We then took an interesting journey

through the back streets and passageways of

old Rochdale, where we were taken on a

journey back in time. Not only were we

entertained by stories of murder and

suspicious events, but also educated on

Rochdale’s fine buildings and the history

behind them. The walk took about 75 minutes

and the ghost walk brought us back to our

starting point at the Baum.

After the final story, of the ghostly market

boy, whose spirit has been seen drifting from

the nearby graveyard, we finished the evening

off with a stiff drink in the cosy surroundings

of the Baum pub, one of Rochdale’s finest

Real Ale pubs.

Overall, a spine tingling, but thoroughly

enjoyable night, in the company of one of

Rochdale’s finest tellers of tales! n

Ever wondered how to stop your

bathroom mirror from fogging up after

your shower?

Try cleaning it with shaving cream. Simply

spread shaving cream over the mirror,

before wiping away with a soft cloth.

Magically, it prevents the mirror from

fogging up again.

Want to know how to clean soap scum

and mildew off shower curtains?

Shower curtains are notoriously difficult to

clean – a simple solution is to place several

large bath towels in a washing machine

along with your shower curtain. Add 1/2

cup of white vinegar. Remove curtain

before the spin cycle and hang

immediately. Soaking shower curtains in

salt water also prevents mildew.

Problem with a stained toilet bowl?

Pour a can of Coca Cola into the toilet

bowl and let it stand for a while; the

phosphoric acid in the Coca Cola will

work on any stains.

Wondering what to use to clean the

entire bathroom?

Use straight or diluted white vinegar in a

spray. A great cleaner for taps, tiles, the

toilet bowl and shower heads. Add a drop

of lemon juice to make things smell

fresher. Diluted white vinegar with a drop

of lemon juice also works great on mould.

Spray solution onto the affected area and

leave on for a few hours. Then wipe off

with a damp cloth.

How to clean mirrors

and glass in your home…

Make up a spray with 50% vinegar and

50% cold water, then add half a teaspoon

of liquid dish detergent and shake well.

Use a microfibre cloth to polish. This is

important as it won’t attract dust.

Want to make your home sparkle?

Use baking soda with a damp sponge.

Baking soda is great for stove tops,

removing water rings around baths,

cleaning cups, taps, counters and

cupboards. You can even use it to wash

dishes if you run out of detergent – simply

add a handful to a bowl of warm water.

How to eliminate unwanted odours…

Among its many talents, baking soda is a

natural odour-eliminator. Just sprinkle on a

little onto your carpet, leave 10 minutes,

then vacuum up to leave your home

smelling refreshed.

It can even keep your feet smelling sweet.

Fill the toe of an old sock with some

bicarbonate of soda and tie it. Place the

bag in the shoe overnight to absorb any

unwanted odours.

Did you know that your kitchen sink

hosts more germs than your toilet seat?

Keep your kitchen sink germ and odour

free by using baking soda and lemon on a

toothbrush to scrub the grooves and

crevices around the drain, taps and faucet.

Home-made cleaning products work just

as well as store-bought products and help

you to keep things clean, green and save

money!

John Bright was always a controversial

figure. As a Quaker-inspired pacifist, an

outspoken opponent of slavery, a

campaigner for Free Trade and a supporter

of the extension of voting rights, Bright had

many enemies on the right of

the political spectrum. He

also had his critics on the

left. And the animosity

lingered for decades.

An attempt on the centenary

of his death in 1989 to move

Bright’s statue in Rochdale

from its site at the foot of

Broadfield Park back to its

original setting in Town Hall

Square met with furious

opposition. ‘Why is Rochdale

honouring a wealthy factory

owner opposed to the reform

of child employment laws?!’

The storm raged in the local press for weeks.

Eventually Bright’s statue stayed put and an

educational resource aimed at contrasting

themes from Bright’s life and work with

contemporary events was pulped.

Bright’s personal journey from Lancashire

cotton manufacturer to internationally

renowned politician was no less

controversial. For all the comparative

advantages Bright enjoyed as a millowner’s

son, this blunt northerner, brash and self-

opinionated, yet somehow fragile and

plagued with self-doubt, was an outsider in

the closed world of Westminster politics.

That he got there at all was in itself

remarkable.

Bright cut his political teeth in a local

controversy revolving around a compulsory

payment to maintain Rochdale parish

church, whether or not you worshipped

there. The young Bright was one of the

leaders of a rowdy opposition, who battled

(sometimes literally) to victory over a

horrified political and religious

establishment.

He went on to lead the

national opposition to a

series of laws (the Corn

Laws) which restricted the

import of corn, benefitting

British farmers but keeping

the price of bread in the

country high.

Bright became an

outspoken MP for Durham,

then Manchester and by the

mid 1850’s gained a

reputation as a skilled

politician and a great

speaker. Then, amidst a

frenzy of popular and media

hysteria, Britain and France

declared war on Russia and the Crimean

War began. Bright was appalled and

campaigned vigorously against the war but

his pacifist stance eventually lost him his

Manchester parliamentary seat .Angry mobs

burned dummies of Bright on Oldham

Street, Manchester.

Johnalive and kicking

John Bright was born in Rochdale on November 16 1811. From a textile

background, he became one of Britain’s foremost politicians, a great statesman

renowned nationally and internationally. At one time he was ‘the most popular

Briton in America’. There are statues of Bright in Rochdale, Manchester,

Birmingham and the House of Commons. Yet, in this the bicentenary of his birth,

few remember him. Via a series of events and activities around the country, a group

of historians, media and heritage professionals and educationalists will attempt to

reverse the process and remind people of Bright’s complex legacy.

“There are statues of

Bright in Rochdale,

Manchester, Birmingham

and the House of Commons.”

Nevertheless it was then that Bright made

some of his greatest speeches. His declaration

that the ‘Angel of Death has been abroad

throughout the land’ had political opponents

in tears and earned him a place in the Oxford

Dictionary of Quotations. As details of the

ghastly campaign seeped out, public opinion

swung in Bright’s favour.

For many years Bright, known sarcastically as

the MP for the United States, had been an

enthusiastic supporter of all things American.

The American Civil War divided opinion in

Britain. Many supported the slave owning

southern Confederate states, particularly in the

north of England which depended on the

import of cotton from the slave areas. Bright

hated the concept of slavery and helped turn

British public and parliamentary opinion in

favour of the northern Unionists led by

Abraham Lincoln. Bright became a hero in

America, earning the lifelong gratitude of

Lincoln and the close friendship of Charles

Sumner the Chairman of the Senate Foreign

Relations Committee.

Bright had become MP for Birmingham in 1858

and, struck by the inequalities he discovered

there, immediately launched a campaign to

extend the vote to all men over 21. His efforts

were rewarded in 1867 with the passing of the

second Parliamentary Reform Act.

John Bright did eventually achieve government

office. He was the first non-conformist to be

appointed to the Cabinet, becoming President

of the Board of Trade in 1868. He was,

however, far more comfortable battling the

Establishment as a backbench MP and he

resigned in 1871. He continued to campaign on

a variety of issues, opposing the Death Penalty

and the practise of flogging in the army.

So, given his radical agenda and considerable

achievements, why was Bright’s death in 1889

greeted with near apathy in Rochdale and why

did so many of his contemporaries consider

him a reactionary and an ‘enemy of the people?’

This paradox informs the series of events

planned for 2011. These already include John

Bright Alive and Kicking sessions in Rochdale,

Pontefract, Manchester and the Imperial War

Museum in London. The events consist of

films of Bright’s speeches fabulously re-enacted

by TV and theatrical star John Stride (The

Main Chance) and a (partisan) discussion led by

Bright supporters and detractors.

A full list of these events will be circulated soon.

So why not come along and participate in what

will be fun, stimulating and (who knows?)

educational sessions?

True Serenity ~ Centre for Holistic Excellence has now

relocated to fantastic new premises in Castleton. The

move was brought about by more demand for larger

space for workshops and specialist evenings such as An Evening

of Clairvoyance which is a 'sell out' on a regular basis.

The new premises are on the 2nd Floor of the beautifully

refurbished Blue Pit Mill, Queensway, Rochdale, OL11 2PG and

are now able to accommodate more people during talks,

workshops and specialist evenings. They are also offering more

private treatment/consultation rooms.

The focus at True Serenity is health and wellbeing, with all

activities designed to enlighten and empower individuals to bring

about positive change in their lives. They will eventually be

opening an additional facility that focuses on children with

additional needs, incorporating complementary health treatments

and creative education.

Geshe Lama Ahbay Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist Monk who is

3rd in line to the Dalai Lama opened the new premises in early

March. Proprieter Jo Potts commented "The move coincided with

a visit from our buddhist friend so we thought it would be nice for

him to do the honours. He provided Puja ceremonies and taught

Buddhist philosophy to our visitors."

Whether challenged by change in your

professional world, major life events, poor

health or just generally wanting to increase

your fitness and energy levels, you are more

likely to succeed by making some conscious

choices about the new habits you want to

create.

Goal?

Increased energy, greater flexibility, weight

loss, time for yourself, reduced unhelpful

stress, new challenges; be really clear about

what you want to achieve and why?

create the Space?

Carve out pockets of space and time in your

life to pay attention to what you want. An

hour every day may be unrealistic for you,

but a few carefully chosen minutes in your

day may work.

Approach?

Breaking things down into manageable and

realistic chunks will help you sustain new habits.

Balance – Do and Renew!

When we set ourselves a goal, we spring into

action. If this action is layered on top of an

already hectic or challenged lifestyle, it is

unlikely on its own to create the change you

desire – it may even in itself become a

source of pressure.

So be very clear about:

What most matters to you;

keep this as your focus

Things currently getting in the way;

limit their impact

Creating space and time to rest and recover

as well as work hard on your goals.

SpringSpring has arrived, with longer days and the

anticipation of warmer weather; what better

time to consider whether you have the

physical, mental and emotional energy you

need for your wellbeing and health?

actioninto

five Minutes for you

In our busy worlds, we rush headlong

into action with scattered minds and

bodies. Next time you have a deadline,

invest 5-10 minutes in this; using your

mobile phone or kitchen timer to keep

track.

Sit comfortably, on your sitting bones -

not slumped, but with your back

supported.

Feet flat on the ground (box files or

books as a footrest!)

Hands relaxed on you lap or wherever

most comfortable

Worries or niggles may try to interrupt –

imagine them passing on by! They can

wait for 5 minutes!

Close your eyes

Keep your focus on your breathing –

belly expands as you inhale, contracts as

you exhale.

Inhale - through nose - to a count of 4

Exhale - through mouth - to a count of 6

After 5 minutes – gently open eyes and

scan for any changes you experience in

yourself.

Short nails are back and in my opinion, here to

stay. Shorter nails are perfect for showcasing vivid

brights, vintage eggshells, or MINX designs. Women

are no longer at the mercy of long, high maintenance

talons. The edgiest, most fashion conscious nails

respect the need to have an active life, staying short,

clean and pretty.

Matte nail polish has lately gained popularity,

offering a plastic alternative to the usual shiny finish.

Why not try Creative Nail Designs Colours and

Effects, which combine beautiful coloured crème

polishes with a range of over 18 different polish effects,

which can completely alter and enhance the look of

your polish.

Flawless nails…

Is this a familiar situation? You treat yourself to a

manicure at your local nail salon and as your technician

is putting the finishing touches to your perfectly

polished nails the little voice in your head is screaming,

“Don’t bother because as soon as I walk out the door

they’ll be scuffed or smudged!”.

Well, say goodbye to nails that are less than

perfect! Say hello to beautiful flawless nails that dry

immediately… welcome to the revolution! It’s not a

fantasy, it’s a miracle and it comes in the form of

Gelish. The world’s first hybrid nail colour that

combines the strength of a gel with the beauty of a

polish! Gelish takes minutes to apply and the removal

is fast, safe and gentle.

It glides on the nail with no filing of the natural

nail required, the application is fast and easy. You could

have it done in your lunch hour (and still have time to

eat lunch!) as Gelish only takes 20 minutes to apply.

This is great for women on the go, for women

who work hard and play harder. If you’re juggling,

shopping, work, cleaning, the children, the husband the

last thing you need is a nail disaster. Gelish gives you

the peace of mind you deserve with 14 days of flawless

colour. Polish that looks as great and super shiny on

day 14 as it did on day 1!

Switch to HD…

In addition to perfectly polished nails, this season

it’s all about perfect brows. Ever wondered how

celebrities manage to achieve that perfect brow? The

secret is High Definition brows (HD Brows). HD

brows treatment includes Tinting, Waxing, Tweezing,

stencilling and shading to create a fabulous defined

eyebrow shape, to lift the eye area and frame the face.

This eyebrow treatment defines your natural beauty

through a unique and revolutionary high definition

process.

Jodie Marsh - Model and TV Presenter said: "My

whole face appears to have changed shape and become

younger simply by the way my eyebrows have been

shaped. I've recommended this treatment to so many

people, I feel sexier, more beautiful and more confident

now with my lush, shaped eyebrows!

Babes in the WoodBudding young performers from Starstruck TheatreSchool recently took to the stage to show off theiracting talents. Over fifty pupils, aged between 4-18years old, took part in Babes in the Wood at TheRiverside, Whitworth.

Kathryn Witney gave an impressive performance as Robin Hood, working alongside Sophie Ansley, as the delightful Maid Marion.Talented siblings, Natalie and Lewis Greenwood, played comedy duoFreda and Fleshcreep and kept the audience entertained with theirhilarious sketches.

Max Hartle gave an exceptional performance as Nurse Nora, with hisflawless comic timing and Rebecca Hardman was perfectly suited tothe role of Dizzy Dora, brightening up the stage in her neon pink wig!

Edward Lang-Whiston was suitably wicked as the Sheriff and BethanyFoden and Amy Greaves worked well together as Fairy Nuff and FairyLiquid, guiding the audience through the pantomime…whilst always inrhyme!

Jody Turner and Megan Kirby gave strong performances as the youngbabes, Jack and Jill, as did Lauren Brockett as Little John andSavanna John as Big John.

Oliver Haigh and Daniel Rhodes, both seven years old, had theaudience in stitches during their rendition of Elvis classic, ‘TeddyBear’, complete with Teddy Bear costumes.

A special mention must also go to Helena Main who showed off hersuperb vocal ability, with Les Mis favourite ‘Castle on a Cloud’.

Other young performers kept everyone entertained in a schoolroomscene packed full of gags, plus a very messy kitchen scene, includingcream cakes and doughball cricket! A zombie performance of Thrilleralso proved a big hit with the audience.

It was great to see the young cast thoroughlyenjoying themselves, as they pulled together to puton a fantastic show. Anyone wishing to join theTheatre School can ring Colin on 07774152620 orvisit www.starstruckagency.com n

Mark Andrews Productions recently presented a magical and entertaining production of Beauty & The Beast, at the Middleton Arena.

The storyline was held together effectively by Fortune Teller and Narrator,Lorraine Graham, who introduced us to the characters, both good and evil. There was an impressive flying witch, Malice-ia, played with great guileby Lydia Griffiths, her wickedness complemented by Michael Garland asLord Chamberlain.

Christopher Berry played a charismatic Prince Phillippe, well matchedwith Rebecca Wicking as Belle; an intelligent heroine whose goodnessshines through.

Providing lots of laughter throughout the production, Madame Lotty wasthe traditional overdressed pantomime dame, played with great energy byDavid Rumelle, who was never short of quickfire responses to theaudience. Jonathan Ryley played a young, fresh-faced Silly Billy, whoengaged the children from his very first appearance.

Dudley Rogers, as the somewhat potty professor, helped keep the pace ofthis production and wowed the audience with his high-kicks and splitsduring a dance routine. The pantomime had plenty of familiar numbersand traditional audience participation, as well as crowd-pleasingappearances, from ‘Wagner’ and ‘Harry Hill’.

The Mark Andrews Dancers and Anita Tymcyshyn dancers excelledthroughout their energetic and well-choreographed routines. MarkAndrews pulled out all the stops in this spectacular production, withstunning scenery and lighting, together with colourful and imaginativecostumes. Colin Meredith

Sweeney ToddROCHDALE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETYThe Gracie Fields Theatre, Rochdale 22nd-26th February 2011

Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society had theaudience on the edge of their seats, withtheir recent spine-tingling production of‘Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber ofFleet Street’, directed by Michael Jones-McCaw, with Musical Direction by JohnStevens.

John Wood gave an exceptionalperformance as Sweeney Todd and wasperfectly paired with the outstanding JoanneGill, as Mrs Lovett, whose comic timing wasspot-on.

Claire Morris was suitably angelic asJohanna and showed off her strong vocaltalents. Her knight in shining armour,Anthony, was played by the talented GaryJones-McCaw, who also choreographed theproduction.

Superb young actor Tom Shiels stole theshow as Tobias, with a beautiful rendition of‘Not While I’m Around’, whilst David Gillwas suitably creepy as Judge Turpin.

Sarah Thewlis impressed with her fantasticacting skills and provided the laughs as‘The Beggar Woman’, who of course, turnedout to be Sweeney’s beloved wife.

Other notable performances came fromRichard Sanderson as Pirelli, PeterWakefield as Beadle Bamford and IanWharmby as Fogg.

By the end of the production, few of the casthad escaped the barber’s vengeful blade.Sweeney’s unlucky clients went straightdown the trap door and into Mrs Lovett’sbakery… with the audience jumping out oftheir seats every single time! But Sweeneyhimself also met a gruesome end, thanks toyoung Tobias who had witnessed his evildeeds.

The chorus never failed to impress, withfantastic numbers such as ‘The Ballad ofSweeney Todd’, ‘God That’s Good’ and ‘CityOn Fire’.

With an exciting, yet chilling score, a highlytalented cast, strong chorus, spectacularscenery and a live orchestra, RochdaleAmateur’s production was certainly athrilling night at the theatre.

Rochdale Amateur’s next production will beThe Sound of Music in February 2012.

CJ Partnership are Award winning architects,

interior designers and energy consultants

based in the renovated Blue Pit Mill in

Castleton, specialising in sustainable design,

and energy conservation.

We enjoy working with our clients on a friendly day-to-daybasis, to make the construction process both an enjoyable andexciting experience.

A good design should be bespoke, tailored to the individual’srequirements, an expression of their own personality if –you-like.Rochdale has a substantial architectural heritage, just look at theTown Hall for example, and the buildings of Edgar Wood, andwe feel that the town should have modern day contributions fromthe current generation-something to have pride in.

We have achieved notable success locally with our residentialprojects at Whitfield farm and the new village at Birtle Brook, both of which where winners at the Rochdale Borough DesignAwards.

Recently we have completed design work in an historic part ofShanghai, which was very well received, and we are due to startbuilding work on a very contemporary ‘green’ home atHollingworth Lake.

We had a very forward thinking client, who wanted acomfortable contemporary home, which made the most of thefantastic views. It’s great to work with people who are asenthusiastic about good design as we are, and it becomes anuplifting experience.

With the usual Japanese quality

assurance and European-inspired

driving dynamics, it’s easy to overlook if

you’re focusing on the major names. But

don’t let its middling profile fool you.

The all new Swift has been completely

refined to create a sleeker, more

sophisticated look. Compact and sporty, the

new design accentuates the unique wrap

around effect glass area which, coupled

with a wider body and restyled headlamps,

creating even more road presence.

From a comfort point of view drive has been

completely refined from the previous model

with a lighter engine that benefits from a

dual VVT engine that combine to increase

performance. It is better for the environment

too, with fuel economy of up to 64.2mpg

and low CO2 figures from just 116g/km.

Available in 3-door and 5-door variations,

prices for the New Suzuki Swift start at

£9,995. Financing starts from as little as

£149 per month and each new Suzuki

comes with a three-year or 60,000 mile

FIAT 500 MULTI-AIRThe Multi-Air concept takes the FIAT500 right back to its roots. Back in 1957the original cinquecento was poweredby a 479cc two cylinder engine, whichgenerated a whopping 13bhp. FIAT hasnow revisited the concept and given it a21st century twist, for while the Nuevo500 has the same number of cylinders,it has a slightly larger capacity at 875ccbut thanks to a huge turbo-charger, itcan produce 85bhp.

For our older readers, memories oftwin-cylinder engines are dubbed withthe soundtrack from holidays on canalbarges, but the 500 Multi-Air makesquite a nice noise, which is more of afizz than a growl.

FIAT quotes an official combined mpgfigure of 68.9mpg, although out in thereal world, which contains hills, you willstruggle to get near this. When I drovethe Multi-Air it did need a fair bit ofrevving when going up gradients, although an official emissions figure of92g/km CO2 means your road tax willbe gratis.

NISSAN LEAFAt one time, electric technology invehicles was confined to Milk Floatsand Dodgems, but although Tesla willclaim to be the first full scalemanufacturer of an electric car, it isNissan that will be the first to bring thetechnology to the mass market.

The Nissan Leaf, propelled by an 80kWmotor, is good for a top speed of nearly90mph but the main consideration isthe range. The lithium-ion batteries canlast around 100 miles between fullcharges, although the good news isthat a 75% charge can be done inaround 30 minutes at a quick chargepoint, the likes of which are likely to popup around the country in the next fewyears.

A price tag of £24,000 may seemexcessive for a car the size of a FordFocus, but you need to remember thatthis is a five-seater family car that canbe run from the plug in your garage andwill never see a filling station, while themotor only needs limited servicing asthere is just one moving part!

FOR EVERYONE ELSE…A new micro industry is popping uparound the industry at the momentproducing Bio-Diesel. What thesecompanies do is take the vegetable oilfrom chippies and refine it into a fuelsuitable for most diesel engines. I amtold that oil used to fry Onion Bhajismakes the most potent fuel!

Priced, as I write, at around £1.15 perlitre it represents a significant savingover the price at the conventional pumpand most engines will require noalterations. What you will need thoughwhen starting to use bio-diesel is a newfuel filter after around three tankfills as itactually benefits the engine byremoving carbon deposits, whichimproves lubrication, but blocks the fuelfilter. This shouldn’t cost more thanaround £50 at a local garage. n

Mark D’ApiceMotoring Expert

As the cost of living debate rumbleson, with various factions all blamingsomeone else for the increase of fuel, families across the country are feelingthe pinch. Of course, the advice wealways get is to use public transportmore or to walk or cycle but if youhave a full Friday night shop or wantto get somewhere after 6pm, the caris very often a necessity.

So the question is how can you maximise every drop ofextortionately-priced fuel. We are all familiar with thehybrid petrol-electric options available on cars like theToyota Prius and Honda Insight, but there are now somealternatives available.
