The following is a reference to the basic principles used in communication regarding the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. If you have any questions pertaining to the application of these guidelines, please contact the Chicago Marathon office at 312.904.9800.

Please note that all communication/marketing pieces using the Bank of America Chicago Marathon name and/or logo must be approved by the Chicago Marathon Office prior to its publication.

STYLE & LANGUAGE GUIDE

EVENT NAMEBank of America Chicago Marathon

First reference to the event should always be Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Subsequent references in a single paragraph or section can be Chicago Marathon.

• Example: The 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 7. The Chicago Marathon is held each year on Columbus Day Weekend.

“Marathon” should be used only if or when using Chicago Marathon appears/sounds redundant, such as when two or more references are made in the same paragraph.

• Example: The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is an annual tradition. Runers from around the world run the Chicago Marathon, making Marathon weeked one of the city’s busiest travel weekends.

Note: Marathon should be capitalized if referring specifically to the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and should not be capitalized if referring to marathons in general. “The” should not be capitalized when referring to the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

OTHER EVENT PROPERTIES Bank of America Chicago Marathon Health & Fitness Expo Bank of America Chicago Marathon 27th Mile Post-Race Party

First reference to other event properties should always include Bank of America Chicago Marathon (i.e. Bank of America Chicago Marathon Health & Fitness Expo). Subsequent references in a single paragraph or section can be shortened to Health & Fitness Expo and 27th Mile Post-Race Party. • Example: The Bank of America Chicago Marathon Health & Fitness Expo will be held on Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6. The

Health & Fitness Expo is free and open to the public. Referring to these properties as “Expo” and “Post-Race Party” should only occur if or when using the full name appears/sounds overly redundant, such as when two or more references are made in the same paragraph.

• Example: The Bank of America Chicago Marahton 27th Mile Post-Race Party will be held in Grant Park’s Butler Field. The 27th Mile Post-Race Party is open to the public and all Post-Race Party attendees can enjoy live music, food and drinks.

LOGO GUIDE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON LOGOThe Bank of America Chicago Marathon logo is composed of two graphicelements: the event symbol and the wordmark “Bank of America Chicago Marathon.” These two elements exist as a single unit.• Preferred usage is on a white background

PREFERRED COLOR APPLICATIONSIt is important that the Bank of America Chicago Marathon logo is always clear and legible. Whenever possible, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon logo should be reproduced in the full-color positive version. Refer to the illustrations below for other official color applications.

LOGO MINIMUM SIZEThe minimum reproducible size for the horizontal logo artwork is 1.5 inches. Reproducing the artwork smaller than the minimum size may create problems with production as well as legibility.*

IMPROPER LOGO USAGERefer to the illustrations below for commonly made errors with the application of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon logo.

CLEAR SPACEWhen placing the Bank of America Chicago Marathon logo keep other text and images away to ensure visibility. The example below illustrates the proportions of clear space.

Do not use the color logo on a color background.

When applying the logo over an image make sure the logo is legible.

When applying the logo over color make sure the logo is legible. Refer to page 2 for correct logo application over a color.

Do not use a text version of the logo.

Clear Space

The example at left illustrates the proportions of the clear space.

Backgrounds

It is important that our logo is always clear and legible. The goal is visibility. Use the positive version of the logo against white or light-colored backgrounds. The reverse logo should be used against dark-colored backgrounds or darker, uncluttered photographic backgrounds. Do not usethe color logo on a background.

Logo Minimum Size

The minimum reproducible size for the horizontal logo artwork is 1.5 inches. Reproducing the art smaller than the minimum size may create problems with production as well as legibility. 1.5”
