It’s like a punch to the face...but in a good way.

Jan. 4, 2014 saw three influential local Tejano legends get inducted into the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame.

Husband and wife group Conjunto la Suerte de Sam y Martina and Luz G. Garza attended the ceremony in Alice to receive their dis-tinguished awards for decades of entertaining the tejano community around the world.

SAM Y MARTINAThe group recorded

their first record with Hacienda Records back in 1993 and have since become exclusive artists to the label.

“My husband and I have both been recording and singing and enter-taining for over 20 years,” Martina explained.

“It’s been a good, long

life together. I’ve really enjoyed working with my husband.”

Upon receiving the call, lead singer Martina recalled, “I was shocked. We had even been consid-ering just taking it easy because we really work so hard.”

The couple were visit-ing the U-Drop Inn on Route 66 in Shamrock when they got the call. Since the duo travel up and down Route 66 all the time, traveling from gig to gig all year long, it was slightly ironic.

“We travel Route 66 like it’s nobody’s busi-ness,” Martina said with a laugh.

“That’s been our life. We do a lot of traveling, especially in the country; we play a lot of North Texas.

With another album in the works and surely more touring in the near future, Martina seems as confident as any young conjunto singer about her success and continuing to do her thing on stage.

There’s a lot of con-juntos better than me,” she said as she grinned widely.

“They just haven’t been doing it as long as me.”

Conjunto la Suerte de Sam y Martina’s music can be found on iTunes and at www.hacienda-records.myshopify.com.

Luz G. GarzaLuz G. Garza has had

the opportunity the share his musical talents, which include playing drums, accordion, keyboard, gui-tar and bass, with many musicians over his very long, celebrated career.

He had the opportu-nity to tour with Flaco Jimenez and took his con-junto music to the other side of the globe, playing in Switzerland, Scotland, Brussels and England amongst other countries.

While on tour, he had the opportunity to meet members of The Rolling Stones, all the while play-ing sold out shows and recording a few albums on the road.

Garza also had the opportunity to teach a class at Berkeley University, introducing students to the bajo sexto sound.

Upon his induction notification, Garza also received a letter from for-mer state representative

Robert Early commending him on his career as well as a letter from former Bee County Judge Jimmy Martinez, who played drums with Garza’s con-junto in the 60s, citing him as a “World Renown Musical Legend.”

Former Bee County Commissioners Toribio Ortiz and Adan Gonzalez awarded Garza with a plaque and special award for being a “World Renowned Musician and Entertainer.”

Garza has played around the world, yet

he is still a member of many local bands such as the mariachi group Los Caballeros, Chano Cadena Conjunto and, of course, his own group, Luz Garza y Su Conjunto.

So, after all these years performing and touring, the R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame award still proves that Garza has what it takes to continue the proud bajo sexto tradition and inspire future musi-cians and that he is a true pioneer in the music landscape.

Tejano legends enter R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame

What is theTejano

R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame?

Gov. Rick Perry declared the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame as the official hall of fame for Tejano Music in 2001.

The hall of fame honors and recognizes Tejano artists, musi-cians, composers, and any other persons who have contributed to the awareness and enter-tainment of the Tejano culture.

It also serves as a museum which pre-serves historical arti-facts, documents and culture of the Tejano Music Industry. It’s located at 213 N. Wright St. in Alice, TX and is open to the pub-lic.

The 2013 film “Drinking Buddies” is an oddly charming piece of cinema more akin to the early 2000’s mumblecore film scene, which director Joe Swanberg helped to cre-ate back in the day.

The film is about two friends; Luke, played with nonchalant swag-ger by Jake Johnson, and Kate, Olivia Wilde who’s nearly unrecognizable playing a homely young every-woman.

They’re best friends

and co-workers at a local Chicago craft brewery who endlessly flirt and seem to be perfect for one another; except they both have significant others.

The story weaves in and out of both their lives as they try to discover what it means to truly love someone and the dif-ficulties of finding happi-ness in the modern world.

The cast also features Anna Kendrick as Jill, Luke’s fiancé, and Ron Livingston as Chris, Kate’s other half.

The chemistry between the actors is solid, espe-

cially between Johnson and Wilde who, if we didn’t know any better, actually seemed like best friends.

There is no definitive beginning or end in this film. It’s just a small sliver of these characters’ lives which may turn some people off, but it’s the journey and not the destination that’s fasci-nating about the film.

Sure, it plays and looks like a hipster’s fantasy complete with a bearded, carefree guy who random-ly goes barefoot and has a cool job and drinks all day. Not to mention his

down-to-earth best friend who just happens to be one of the most beauti-ful women in the world, but the two main actors elevate it to such great heights you just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Everything in the film not only looks real but feels like it’s taking place down the street or at any local brewery around the United States.

The dialogue between all the characters seems effortless and genuine, as does the film.

It was a film festival darling through late 2012 and all of 2013, creating great buzz throughout the film community.

Director Joe Swanberg, mostly known for helm-ing “Hannah Takes the Stairs,” makes the best use of his cast and unique setting, and in turn cre-ates a very heartbreak-ing but ultimately trium-phant film about ordinary people living ordinary lives.

“Drinking Buddies” is available on DVD, Blu-Ray and is now streaming on Netflix.

“Drinking Buddies” actor Jake Johnson has been popping up in film and TV a lot more in recent years. So much so, that most people recognize his face or know him as the guy from the hit TV show “The New Girl” where he plays Zooey Deschanel’s roommate, Nick Miller.

After a string of indie hits, he’s finally moving up to mainstream films with a starring role in 2015’s “Jurassic World,” the latest “Jurassic Park” sequel, as well as 2014’s “Neighbors,” staring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron.

Hey, that guy looks familiar...

So what is a Microbrewery?A Microbrewery or a craft brewery is a brewery that produces a limited amount of beer and is typi-cally applied to breweries that are much smaller than large-scale corporate breweries, and are indepen-dently owned. Such breweries are generally char-acterized by their emphasis on flavor and brewing technique.

Beer by the NumbersThe number of operating US breweries has grown from 1,970 in 2011 to 2,483 in 2013. That includes Brewpubs, Microbreweries and Regional Craft Breweries.

Craft Brewing Facts• Craft brewers currently provide an estimated 108,440 jobs in the U.S., including serving staff in brewpubs.

• Growth of the craft brewing industry in 2012 was 15% by volume and 17% by dollars compared to growth in 2011 of 13% by volume and 15% by dollars.

• Craft brewers sold an estimated 13,235,917 barrels* of beer in 2012, up from 11,467,337 in 2011.

• The craft brewing sales share in 2012 was 6.5% by volume and 10.2% by dollars.

• Craft brewer retail dollar value in 2012 was an esti-mated $11.9 billion.

• As of March 18, 2013, the Brewers Association is aware of 409 brewery openings in 2012 (310 micro-breweries and 99 brewpubs) and 43 brewery closings (18 microbreweries and 25 brewpubs).

• 2,347 craft breweries operated for some or all of 2012, comprised of 1,132 brewpubs, 1,118 microbrew-eries and 97 regional craft breweries.

• 2,403 total breweries operated for some or all of 2012, the highest total since the 1880s.

here’s very few places you can go in South Texas and hang

out with Klingons, shoot the bull with Superman’s family or kick back and have a slice of pizza with a min-iature Ninja Turtle, but one more place has just been added to the list.

The First Victoria Comic Con took place Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Victoria Community Center. By the droves of fans dressed as their favorite pop culture icons from past and present, it was clearly a smashing success.

The line to get in reached to the entrance to the parking lot, which was packed bumper to bumper.

Inside, the center reached near capacity as it brimmed with cos-tumed fanatics dressed as their favorite anime, comic book and film heroes and villains, including a roaming, beeping and booping life-sized replica of film fans’

favorite droid, R2-D2.McLain McGuire,

head honcho of comic book company CCP Comics, took his fellow artists and set up shop to meet and greet old and new fans alike, as well as to review the portfolios of future would-be comic art-ists.

Special guest and cosplay cutie Maridoll was also on hand to sign headshots and pose for photos with fans. The other special guest was WWE superstar and actor Kevin Nash, who towered over the enthusi-astic crowd as they clam-ored for a chance to meet and take photos of the famed 6’ 9” athlete.

The cosplay contest was clearly the most popular event of the day. There were two categories in the event — one for chil-dren and one for adults. The event was judged on both originality and cre-ativity.

It was a close call in the children’s category,

between a young girl dressed as ’80s cartoon icon Rainbow Brite and a young boy dressed as ’90s cult film favorite Edward Scissorhands.

Eddie ended up with the first place trophy with his homemade cos-tume, which was a close replica of the original.

The adult category got a little more complicated as Nacho Libre made a grand appearance, mock-ing actor Jack Black’s notoriously outrageous performance as the char-acter.

DC comic superhero Green Arrow, Mortal Kombat’s Mileena and Adventure Time’s Flame Princess stood out

amongst the other participants.

The crowd surged to the stage and con-tinuously cheered and jeered at all the cosplayers, which nearly blew the roof off the community center.

The event coordina-tors are already hard at work on the 2015 Comic Con, which might tie into next year’s Victoria Film Festival, merging the two popular events that are well within driving distance from anywhere in South Texas.

Just don’t forget your tights.

The first annual Victoria Comic Con brings out the weird and

not-so-weird alike.

uring the day, Maria Ramos is a mild-mannered young Mexican-

American woman mak-ing her way through Houston like any aver-age citizen.

But it’s in her bed-room, amongst all the fabric and strange arti-facts laying about, that she becomes Mariedoll; one of America’s reigning queens of cosplay.

She travels across the country to attend and host numerous conven-tions and events, excit-edly meeting fans and fel-low cosplayers.

STXscene got the chance to chat with her when she attended the

first Victoria Comic Con.

What is it about cosplay that got you hooked?

I was inspired by some Japanese cosplayers back

in 2006 when I saw pho-tos of my favorite anime characters come to life as real humans. It made my heart jump, and I wanted

to try and do it myself because it looked like so much fun!

What is it about cosplay that makes it c ont iguous ly grow in popular-ity?

The fact that you can liter-ally cosplay whatever you want as long as it’s fictional, and it gives you a chance to escape to a wonderful world of fan-tasy

You are well known in the Cosplay community, so do you have to constantly keep up with other cosplay-ers and keep p u s h i n g y o u r -self to g e t

more creative and keep pushing the envelope?

No, I don’t com-pete with others—that creates unhappiness. What I do, I do it for myself and because I love it. If I get more creative in the process and grow more, then great! I never

compare myself to others though.

What is the best com-pliment you get when you attend events?

It makes me so happy when fans tell me they go to a convention just to see me! It’s really amazing.

What do you do for a living outside of cosplay?

I’m cur-rently working on my

music career, so that’s what I do.

So, you’re a sing-er, too?

Well, I like to cre-ate dance/pop style music and hope to come out with a full album soon!

What are some of the magazines/publica-tions that have featured you.

There are a lot! I really don’t have the memory to write them all down though, lol.

Why do you do it all?

Because I can. I think everyone should live life to the fullest. It’s the only one you have, and everyone should fol-low their dreams, no mat-ter what. It’s what we are all meant to do.

I love the world and everyone in it. <3
