You are invited to these important events in the life of MDPC:

informational Meeting Tomorrow, February 2 | 6:30 PM | Sanctuary

The Denominational Task Force (DTF) invites you to this meeting to learn more about the current denominational issues and our possible courses of action. DTF members and MDPC Elders will present information regarding the possibility of MDPC entering the Discernment Process. After the presentations, you will have an opportunity to ask questions of the panel.

Tomorrow evening, these reports will be presented live; however, samples of the presentations were previously recorded and may be viewed on our website at denom-issues.mdpc.org.

Childcare is available. Please make a reservation, if possible, by emailing [email protected].

40-Hour Prayer VigilThe decisions MDPC faces regarding discernment must be entered into prayerfully. Join us in seeking God’s guidance through a community 40-hour prayer vigil leading up to the February 22 meeting. The vigil will take place in the MDPC Prayer Chapel, located off the Blalock circular drive.

Visit denom-issues.mdpc.org to sign up for a time that fits your schedule.

Congregational MeetingSunday, February 22 | 9:45 AM | Sanctuary

This meeting will be held during the 9:45 AM Worship slot, with the purpose of voting on whether or not to enter the Discernment Process.

We ask those who normally worship at 8:30 and 9:45 to attend the 8:30 Service (moved to the Sanctuary), then stay for the 9:45 Congregational Meeting. The 11:15 worshippers are invited to come early for the Congregational Meeting, then stay for their regular 11:15 Worship Service.

At 9:45, we will devote the full hour to the Congregational Meeting. Prior to the main motion, we will have a brief time of worship, prayer, and a devotional. We will then move through the business of the meeting and then conduct a vote of the MDPC membership* by paper ballot.

*Only members are eligible to vote. If you have not been confirmed or attended a New Member Class at MDPC, then you are not a member and will not be eligible to vote at the Congregational Meeting. If you are uncertain of your membership status, contact Cinnamon McDade at 713-953-2556.

Digging Deeper

Today we continue our sermon series, A Day in the Life of Jesus. In the three years of Jesus’ public ministry, He touched the lives of many people. He healed,

He comforted, He confronted, and He did the miraculous. Each individual story is fascinating and rich with truth. But when put together, these stories paint an incredible portrait of Jesus as God’s Son, our Savior, the Messiah, and the One through whom God initiated reconciliation and forgiveness.Last week, we looked at Jesus bringing a dead man back to life in Luke 7:11-17. This was a profound and public display of His divine power, which had great impact on those around Him. Today we move to Mark 4:35-41, the account of Jesus calming a sudden and violent storm on the Sea of Galilee. This miracle further affirmed that Jesus is not only Lord of the Christian Church, but also Lord of all Creation!

• JesusandHisdiscipleswereontheshoreoftheSeaofGalilee.Hehadjustcompleteda lengthy session of teaching, in which He shared several parables. Our passage begins with evening coming and Jesus retreating with His disciples into a boat to cross the sea. Periodically, Jesus would retreat from the crowds. We all have periods of intensity and busyness. Where do you go to retreat? What do you do? What effect does it have?

• TheSeaofGalileeispronetohavingsuddenstorms.Windgustscanquicklyturnthe normally peaceful lake into a tumultuous sea. As Jesus was in the boat with His disciples, such a storm blew up and the waves were breaking over and flooding the small vessel. If we think of this storm as a metaphor, what kind of storm can suddenly appear in your life? How do you respond? What lessons have you learned?

• Whilethestormwasraging,Jesuswasasleeponacushioninthebackoftheboat. The disciples awakened Him and said, “Teacher, don’t You care if we drown?” What might this tell us about Jesus? What do you think the disciples were expecting of Jesus?

• Jesusgotup, rebukedthewind, andtoldthewaves,“Quiet! Be still!” And the storm ceased. If you had been in the boat and witnessed this, how do you think you would have responded? What would you have thought? Have you ever witnessed something miraculous?

• ThenJesusrebukedthedisciplesbysaying,“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Why do you tend to be afraid? What are the obstacles to having complete faith in Jesus?

• Intheirterror, thedisciplesaskedeachother,“Whoisthis?Eventhewindandwavesobey Him?” To be fair, this was still early in Jesus’ ministry and the fullness of His mission had not been revealed. We have the benefit of the full Bible and more than 2,000 years of Church history. Yet some people are still terrified and puzzled by Jesus. How have you become convinced about who Jesus is and what He has accomplished?

Digging Deeper is written by Executive Pastor, Dave Steane. It explores Dr. Edington’s weekly Scripture passage selection, but not necessarily his sermon message.
