About

The #13 Foundation (Fundacja #13) is a think tank founded by three individuals with expertise in the area of environment protection, climate change, air quality and its impact on health and financial mechanisms. The foundation was established in 2015, when the idea of using our intellectual capacity for broader activity emerged. Our key objectives include pursuing activities related to developing and promoting knowledge about sustainable development, climate protection, natural environment and resources through the initiation, support and management of studies and scientific research; raising awareness and educating the participants of socio-economic life in the area of sustainable development. Currently the Foundation is involved, as a  co-beneficiary, in the Project “Coal as a  toxic financial asset” (a  campaign targeting financial institutions in Poland engaged in and supporting new and existing lignite and coal capacities), demonstrating that there is a need (and it is in the financial institutions’ interest) to redirect this money into low-emission development financed by the KR fund coordinated by the foundation ‘Rozwój Tak Odkrywki Nie’ (“Development YES, open pits NO”). The Foundation has also a  grant from the European Climate Foundation that engages Ministry of Health to become a  stronger stakeholder for cleaner air by supporting them with technical expertise. The Foundation doesn’t employ permanent staff, as the Board decided to recruit task-related experts. This concept allows us to dedicate more funds to better performance while attaining project objectives.

About

BIOTREM technology – globally unique, innovative and patented, sustainable method of processing by-products of the milling industry. Using modified servo-presses, the technology allows moulding wheat bran into designated forms. After processing, the mouldings gain market value as biodegradable packaging. They are mainly used as disposable tableware or food service take-away containers. Biotrem packaging products are simultaneously bio-based, biodegradable within 30 days, use annually renewable agricultural by-products and are free of chemical additives. The above characteristics position the Biotrem product line as a premium offer, with environmental standards beyond its market counterparts. Biodegradable packaging, as market research shows, is the fastest-growing niche of the packaging industry – a business opportunity the project plans to exploit, as it provides products that meet the demand generated by both legislation (imposing the requirement to reduce packaging waste) and consumer trends (environmentally conscious attitude).

About

CANPACK is one of the leading international companies in the packaging industry. As a result of continuous investment for over 25 years and installation of equipment at the world-class technological level, CANPACK constantly strengthens its market position in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Our portfolio consists of aluminium, steel and glass packaging, the aluminium beverage can having the biggest share in our activities. We are a  responsible manufacturer aiming to protect the future of our planet by reducing aluminum waste footprint on the environment. We are taking care about our products during their whole life cycle, successively seeking to increase the recycling rate of aluminum cans. Used aluminum cans (Used Beverage Cans – UBC) collected at our collection plants are properly sorted, cleaned and prepared for recycling. Our experience and processes assure that the UBC delivered to the aluminum remelter is adequately cleaned, which facilitates the recycling process and saves energy and raw materials needed for packaging manufacturing, reducing the carbon footprint at the same time. We also support educational campaigns aimed to promote recycling of cans within local societies – e.g. Every Can Counts – a pan-European project of the aluminium industry, focused on out-of -home collection and education. Furthermore, CANPACK has launched trial programs for Voluntary Take Back Machines in Poland and Romania. The machines are designed for used aluminum beverage cans (UBC) collection. It works in a very simple way: the user inserts an empty can, and in exchange he/she receives a shopping voucher, which may be used at the same shop where it is installed (other forms of gratification, such as lotteries, donations, etc. are also possible). Machines are equipped with advanced sensors, which allows to accept used aluminum beverage cans of all sizes both crushed and intact. What is important, only aluminum cans are accepted, packaging made from other materials is being rejected, therefore the collected material is very easy to recycle. The aluminium can is a perfect example of circular economy, as it is a permanent material – it can be recycled endlessly. 75% of the aluminium ever produced is still in use.

Knowledge and teamwork – these are the corporate pillars on which KGHM has been building the position of a leader in copper and silver production for 55 years. As a modern and global organisation, it influences sustainable development worldwide. KGHM engages in the extracting and processing of valuable natural resources, with the largest European deposits of copper ore located in the south-western part of Poland, right in the heart of its catchment area. Owing to its vast experience, openness and constant improvement of competencies, the company has built a  unique culture of teamwork, ranking high on the international arena. Knowledge-based experience in technologies and processes, combined with employee competencies, constitute the most precious resource of KGHM and provide the foundation of the company’s value. All this contributes to the growth of the company as an environmentally friendly, socially sensitive and inclusive corporation. Knowledge-based experience is also instrumental in discovering new sustainable methods of extracting and processing natural resources. KGHM ranks among the world’s best producers of silver and copper. Apart from these metals, KGHM also produces molybdenum, nickel, gold, palladium and platinum. It is also the only company in Europe to produce rhenium and ammonium perrhenate from its own resources. KGHM plans to become one of the biggest multi-resource companies in the world. KGHM cultivates its reputation of a reliable producer, a trusted business partner and a company with a sustainable development policy. KGHM is also a responsible employer acknowledging and recognising the commitment and cultural identity of its employees around the world. The company employs a  total of 34 thousand people who believe that their work is important to the world. About

The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (Narodowy Fundusz Ochrony Środowiska i Gospodarki Wodnej – NFOŚiGW) has a unique character on a global scale and plays a key role in financing environmental protection in Poland. To show the scale of its activity: the National Fund allocates approximately 1.2-1.4 billion euros per year to finance environmental projects – half of it is European funds, and another half is its own funds. Since 1989 when it was established, the National Fund has co-financed investments worth a total of nearly 50 billion euros.

The National Fund supports the state ecological policy in many areas. It mainly contributes through grants and preferential loans. Among supported projects are investments in circular economy, waste management, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, as well as water and sewage management. It is worthwhile to mention the National Fund’s pilot project dedicated to five municipalities which want to develop circular economy solutions locally.
