Study in Taiwan Scholarships for CSUCA Students   

In 2008, the Ministry of Education (MOE), National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) and two 

other top universities in Taiwan jointly established a scholarship program for students of 

CSUCA  (Consejo Superior Universitario Centroamericano) member universities, offering 

opportunities to study a wide range of degree programs at the graduate level as well as 

to  learn  Mandarin  Chinese.  The  scholarship  aims  to  promote  understanding  and 

friendship between Taiwan and the members of CSUCA in Central America. 

 

Types & Amounts 

1. For graduate studies, a monthly stipend of NT$25, 000 (≒US$830). Students are 

exempted from tuition and credit fees during the award period: 

‐ PhD students: up to 3 years   

‐ Masters students: up to 2 years   

2. For Chinese language studies, a monthly stipend of NT$25,000 (≒US$830), with 

study periods ranging from 3 to 12 months (1 year intensive program).         

*Costs & Living Expenses is approx. NT$150K ~ 200K (≒US$5,000 ~ 6,600) per year.

  Applicants may apply to only ONE of the following programs:

Applicants may choose from ONE of the following universities:     

‐ National Chiao Tung University (www.nctu.edu.tw) 

‐ National Chung Hsing University (www.nchu.edu.tw) 

‐ National Yang‐Ming University (www.ym.edu.tw) 

2. Intensive Mandarin Chinese Language Program :   

Applicants may enroll in the 1‐year intensive Mandarin Chinese Language 

Program (Beginner Level) provided by the NCTU Chinese Language Center:

Eligibility Applicants for the scholarship must meet all of the following criteria:   

1.    Must be full‐time students or graduates of CSUCA member universities. 

2.    Must be qualified to apply as international students (see Application Instruction). 

3.    Are not currently students either at a Mandarin training center or at a 

university/college in Taiwan.   

4.    Are not currently recipients of a scholarship or subsidy offered by any 

governmental or educational institution in Taiwan.

The process proceeds as follows: 

Step 1: Announcement of the Study in Taiwan program to students at CSUCA 

member universities and call for applications. 

Step 2: Submission of Application 

(1)   Each applicant can choose up to three degree programs under the 

same college/school from ONE university only; alternatively, the 

applicant may apply to the intensive Mandarin Chinese Language 

Program at National Chiao Tung University (NCTU); 

(2)   The applicant fills out the application form; 

(3)   The applicant sends the application pack (application form and all 

  required documents) to the CSUCA office by the specified deadline. 

Step 3: Evaluation for Applications 

(1)    Basic requirements of the applicants: 

1. Proof of English proficiency     

2. Outstanding records 

3. Strong recommendation for academic and/or research excellence 

(2)    Applications are received at CSUCA by April 15. CSUCA selects and 

recommends up to 30 degree program applicants and 20 Mandarin 

Chinese language program applicants. Applications are forwarded to 

NCTU, and NCTU distributes the applications to the respective 

universities for review. 

Step 4: Notification of Acceptance 

Each university notifies applicants of the results of their application by 

June 10 by email and post. 

    

Suspension of the Scholarships Scholarships will be suspended if the conditions set out below are not met: 

1. Degree Program Scholarship Recipients 

Academic Performance: Beginning from the second study term/semester in 

Taiwan, if a recipient fails to achieve a specified minimum academic average of 

the registered university, the stipend for one month will be suspended in the 

following semester. Recipients must also meet the minimum credit regulation of 

the university or the stipend for one month will be suspended in the following 

semester.     

 

2. Chinese Language Program Scholarship Recipients: 

Attendance Records: With the exception of a serious illness or accident, if a 

recipient is frequently absent from the registered language courses for 12 or 

more hours in a single month, the stipend for the following month will be 

suspended. 

 

Regulations and Terms 1. Recipients may only receive the scholarship ONCE for each degree or for the 

Chinese language program. 

2. If a recipient fails to arrive in Taiwan by the specified registration date, the 

scholarship award status and admission will be cancelled. 

3. If the scholarship recipients drop‐out, are expelled from the institution at which 

they are registered, or have their scholarship revoked for any reason, the 

scholarship offer will be terminated.

About Us The  Chinese  Language  Center  (CLC)  at National  Chiao  Tung 

University (NCTU) was established in 2005 in compliance with 

the university’s policy of  globalization. Our  students  include 

international  students,  exchange  students  as  well  as 

extension program students, who are foreign professionals at 

the  Hsinchu  Science  Park,  non‐Chinese  teachers  in  private 

language  schools,  overseas  ethnic  Chinese  and  others. 

Courses  at multiple  levels  from  beginning  to  advanced  are 

currently  offered.  These  help  learners  develop  accurate 

pronunciation and communication skills in Mandarin Chinese 

in order to cope with daily situations, while offering  learners 

a  close‐up  view  of  Chinese  culture,  as  well  as  providing 

updated information about Taiwan and the Greater China. 

 

Features  Take an integrated approach to help students develop the four skills in Chinese. 

Help students develop listening and speaking abilities by creating simulated situations with 

audio‐visual aids and using speaking cues for effective communication. 

Provide training in thematic reading and writing, stimulating students to actively use 

vocabulary and sentence patterns. 

Use Hanyu pinyin and meaning‐rich traditional Chinese characters for instruction. 

Teach basic Chinese typing and handwriting via computer‐aided technology. 

Offer theme‐based courses in business, culture, or news stories for advanced learners. 

Supplement language instruction with an e‐learning platform, enabling classes to be extended 

without the constraints of time and space. 

Use a combination of assessment strategies: interactive activities with local students, 

simulation games, audio‐visual recordings of daily communication tasks, and written tests. 

Offer credits for the students who satisfactorily accomplish the requirements of our credit 

courses, and award completion certificates to students of non‐credit programs.

Credit Courses For the Fall and Spring semesters, integrated courses at Basic 

Level,  Intermediate  Level  and  High‐intermediate  Level  are 

offered  to  improve  students’ abilities  in  listening,  speaking, 

reading and writing. Theme‐based courses on Taiwan Today, 

Reading  Chinese  News,  Business  Chinese  are  also  offered. 

The  Spring  semester  starts  in  mid‐February  and  the  Fall 

semester  in mid‐September. Each  semester  lasts 18 weeks. 

There  are  three  or  four  class‐hours  per week  for  different 

courses. 

For the Summer session, both language courses and cultural activities are offered. Language courses 

include beginner and intermediate levels, while cultural activities include information about Chinese 

society, history, festival, art, medicine, martial art, etc. The first Summer session starts in early July 

and the second in early August. The duration of each Summer session is five to six weeks. There are 

a  total of 54 class‐hours  for each Summer  session, plus  four culture activities of  two hours each, 

which are held once a week.   

Special One‐On‐One courses are available to meet individual needs or requirements. 

 

Faculty and Facilities All the instructors are professionally qualified for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) and 

have more  than  three  years  of  teaching  experience. Volunteer  teachers with  abundant  teaching 

experience, some with the Certificate of Proficiency for TCSL awarded by the Ministry of Education, 

are ready to provide additional tutorials, helping students improve their pronunciation in particular. 

In addition, we provide an audio‐visual self‐study center and a library with an enormous number of 

books.

Application Procedures

Make sure you are qualified to apply as an international student (see next section)

Note that this application is for FULL-TIME STUDY ONLY.

Check whether the department/institute for which you intend to apply accepts international students.

Type or hand print the application form clearly and carefully.

Prepare all required documents accordingly and confirm all required signatures.

Plan your schedule to allow enough time for your package to arrive at the CSUCA Office by the deadline,

which is April 15, 2011. Late or incomplete application packages will not be processed.

NOTE:

No application documents will be returned, whether the applicant is admitted or not.

It is the applicants’ responsibility should the admission result be affected by not submitting the required

documents as specified.

Admission offer does not guarantee the issuance of a VISA for Taiwan, Republic of China (ROC).

Qualification of International Student

Applicants seeking admissions must meet the legal qualification standard as stated in the “Regulations Regarding

International Students Undertaking Studies in Taiwan” released by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on February 1,

Failure to meet the above regulation may result in serious consequences, including cancelation/revocation of

General Requirements

Graduate Degree Program

(1) A copy of the bachelor’s degree diploma is required for application to the master’s program;

a copy of the master’s degree diploma is required for application to the Ph.D. program.

(2) Applicants are expected to have a high level of English proficiency. The minimum requirement (or

equivalent) is as follows (some departments/institutes may specify higher scores):

TOEFL PBT 500 / CBT 173 / iBT 73 or IELTS 5.5

(3) For applying to the College of Management, a valid GMAT score is required. Applicants from countries

where the GMAT test is not offered may submit a valid TOEFL score instead.

(4) For the Global MBA (GMBA) program, a minimum of two years of work experience is required.

Mandarin Chinese Language Program

This intensive language program is designed for beginner level learners, especially for those who have never

learned Mandarin Chinese before. Admitted students will be required to take a further placement test when

register at the Chinese Language Center. If the students’ knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is found to be higher

than the designated program level, the scholarship offer will be canceled immediately.

For faster and more accurate processing of your application, download the application form and type

the information; otherwise, print the form CAREFULLY and CLEARLY as illegible handwriting may lead to

misunderstanding of key information.

Degree program applicants may apply up to 3 program. A complete set of application documents should be

prepared for each program applied. All documents submitted should be prepared in either English or

Chinese. Provide valid translation when necessary.

3. One study plan

A study plan in English or Chinese clearly stating your motivation, objectives, detailed plan of study,

research interests, potential contribution and other relevant information. The suggested length is 2 pages,

12 pt, single spaced.

4. One photocopy of official diploma*

The official diploma must bear the seal of the issuing institution.

Graduating student should submit a certificate issued by the school/university for the forth-coming

graduation. For such applicants, the official diploma should be notarized by the Taiwan Embassy or

Taiwan Representative Office nearby and submitted upon registration.

4a. Translation of official diploma (if applicable)*

The official diploma must be translated into either English or Chinese when the original one is not

issued in either language.

5. One copy of official transcript*

The official transcript must bear the seal of the issuing institution. If you have attended more than one

institution, separate official transcripts should be submitted by each institution.

It should be sealed and sent by the issuing institution to the International Admissions Office of OIA directly.

5a. Translation of official transcript (if applicable)*

Representative Office in or near the country where the documents are issued.

6. Two letters of recommendation

The letters of recommendation must be written by the applicant’s teachers/advisors/employers in either

English or Chinese and submitted in sealed and signed envelopes.

7. One photocopy of passport

One photocopy of the passport photo page is required. Alternatively, submit a copy of national

identification.

8. Confidential Financial Statement

Please provide proofing document clearly states that you have enough funds/resource to cover your

traveling and living expenses to undertake studies Taiwan. It could be either you or your sponsor’s bank

deposit statement. An official bank statement issued in English/Chinese (dated after January 1st, 2011)

in the amount of US$3,000 (NT$100,000) or above. In the case the bank statement is not issued in the

name of the applicant, a signed declaration must be provided from the sponsor. In the declaration it

should clearly states the sponsor’s relationship with the applicant and commitment to cover the

applicant’s all expenses in Taiwan.

9. Medical report (includes HIV/AIDS screening result)

The medical report must be issued in either English or Chinese within the last 6 months, and should be

signed by a practicing physician and stamped by the hospital/clinic.

10. One photocopy of the proof of English proficiency

One photocopy of the test score is required. The minimum requirements (or equivalent) are TOEFL PBT

500 / CBT 173 / iBT 73 or IELTS 5.5 unless specified otherwise by some department/institutes.

11. Proof of Chinese proficiency (required for specific graduate programs)

Chinese proficiency may be evaluated by submitting test certificates or letters written by Chinese

instructors.

12. Proof of work experiences (if applicable)

It is required for application to the GMBA program.

13. Proof of renouncement of nationality of the Republic of China (if applicable)

The document should be issued by the Ministry of Interior for more than 8 years to the date of

registration.

14. Other documents

Documents such as GMAT/GRE scores or proof of work experience may be required by specific

department/institute. For specific requirements, please visit the website of individual department/institute.
