About Us The Chinese Language Center (CLC) at National Chiao Tung
University (NCTU) was established in 2005 in compliance with
the university’s policy of globalization. Our students include
international students, exchange students as well as
extension program students, who are foreign professionals at
the Hsinchu Science Park, non‐Chinese teachers in private
language schools, overseas ethnic Chinese and others.
Courses at multiple levels from beginning to advanced are
currently offered. These help learners develop accurate
pronunciation and communication skills in Mandarin Chinese
in order to cope with daily situations, while offering learners
a close‐up view of Chinese culture, as well as providing
updated information about Taiwan and the Greater China.
Features Take an integrated approach to help students develop the four skills in Chinese.
Help students develop listening and speaking abilities by creating simulated situations with
audio‐visual aids and using speaking cues for effective communication.
Provide training in thematic reading and writing, stimulating students to actively use
vocabulary and sentence patterns.
Use Hanyu pinyin and meaning‐rich traditional Chinese characters for instruction.
Teach basic Chinese typing and handwriting via computer‐aided technology.
Offer theme‐based courses in business, culture, or news stories for advanced learners.
Supplement language instruction with an e‐learning platform, enabling classes to be extended
without the constraints of time and space.
Use a combination of assessment strategies: interactive activities with local students,
simulation games, audio‐visual recordings of daily communication tasks, and written tests.
Offer credits for the students who satisfactorily accomplish the requirements of our credit
courses, and award completion certificates to students of non‐credit programs.
Promotional Material for Students of CSUCA Member Universities v201101
Credit Courses For the Fall and Spring semesters, integrated courses at Basic
Level, Intermediate Level and High‐intermediate Level are
offered to improve students’ abilities in listening, speaking,
reading and writing. Theme‐based courses on Taiwan Today,
Reading Chinese News, Business Chinese are also offered.
The Spring semester starts in mid‐February and the Fall
semester in mid‐September. Each semester lasts 18 weeks.
There are three or four class‐hours per week for different
courses.
For the Summer session, both language courses and cultural activities are offered. Language courses
include beginner and intermediate levels, while cultural activities include information about Chinese
society, history, festival, art, medicine, martial art, etc. The first Summer session starts in early July
and the second in early August. The duration of each Summer session is five to six weeks. There are
a total of 54 class‐hours for each Summer session, plus four culture activities of two hours each,
which are held once a week.
Special One‐On‐One courses are available to meet individual needs or requirements.
Faculty and Facilities All the instructors are professionally qualified for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) and
have more than three years of teaching experience. Volunteer teachers with abundant teaching
experience, some with the Certificate of Proficiency for TCSL awarded by the Ministry of Education,
are ready to provide additional tutorials, helping students improve their pronunciation in particular.
In addition, we provide an audio‐visual self‐study center and a library with an enormous number of
books.
