Homeschool Daily Planner: Fill in your homework each week in class, check your schedule daily and check off your work as you complete them.
Geography: Bring all weekly maps to class; save your best copy of each region for your home school records.
Rhetoric: Try printing flashcards for the catechism questions (see pgs. 63-68 of “Rhetoric Study Guide” e-document).
Supplies: Consider bringing all your supplies to class in a collapsible, portable cart.
Flashcards How to make cards:
How to study using flashcards:
1. Arrange all of your flash cards in a grid. You should keep it to about five flash cards to a column.REMEMBER you will only start with a few the first week!
2. Remove the cards you already know. Be very honest about this, don't guess and see if you're right. Takethe ones you know and put them aside in a pile and fill in the gaps. These cards you may be put in the“review” pile to be reviewed once or twice a week. Choose a day of the week and create a habit of review-ing all you have memorized on that day in addition to the new definitions.
3. Take the first row of your flash cards into your hand and lay down 3 cards in front of you.4. Read the first card - front and back out loud.5. Read the second card - front and back out loud.6. Point to the first card and say the definition out loud.7. Then point at the second card and say the definition out loud.8. Take the third card and read the front and back out loud.9. Point at each card and say the definition of each term.10. After you're sure about them, rearrange the cards without looking and say the definition for each card to
make sure you memorized the card and not the placement in the row.11. Take the fourth card and add it to the mix.12. Mix up the cards and say each definition again.13. Then, throw in the fifth card and practice saying each definition. Repeat the cards as needed until you are
able to say each definition. Be sure to check yourself!14. Then put them to the side and repeat steps four through thirteen again with the next column of cards.15. When you have memorized the second column of cards, join them with the first column of cards and run
through them all to see if you know them. Again, double checking for mistakes.16. Continue with this process until you have all of the columns memorized.17. Congratulations! You learned your flashcards quickly.
This may seem like a lot to do but if you start with the first week’s cards it will go quickly. As you add more cards each week you will be mastering the previous week’s cards. If you are faithful you will not have a huge pile of cards. Be careful to not “retire” the cards too the quickly. If you find that you do just put the card back in the “daily study” pile.
Note to parents:
Learning how to use flashcards effectively is an important discipline and skill. It takes time for your student to learn how to effectively use flashcards. Make this a year long goal. Please sit with them at first and teach them how to use the flashcards. When you think they understand the process then sit near them and discretely watch their practice to be sure they understand and can do it on their own. Consider the Challenge A year a year of training as they begin to take more responsibility for their own learning process. Do not assume that they will learn to effectively utilize flashcards in a few weeks. You should continue to check on their progress and be sure they are not taking shortcuts throughout the year.
• You need unlined index cards • glue stick or tape
• Cut out each week’s vocabulary terms anddefinitions.
• Glue the words on one side of the card and thedefinition on the opposite side. You may draw apicture on the card to help you remember!
Games to play with flashcards:
BINGO
Arrange the cards in a BINGO grid with the same side showing (either the word or the definition as long as they are all uniform). Call out the answers and have your child flip over the card that matches and check their answer. If it is right then the card remains flipped over. Make sure to yell “BINGO!” when you get a line of cards flipped.
Pictionary
Put all the cards in a stack and take turns drawing them and guessing what the feature is. Be sure to include Dad and siblings!
Use a game you already have!
Take a look at the games you have. Can you replace the game cards with your flashcards?
Make your own game board!
Lay out the cards in a winding circular path. Roll dice and move a pawn that many squares ahead. Answer the question you land on. Proclaim the first person to get to the end the winner!
Concentration
Make two sets of flashcards—one set with the definition and one set with the term. Keep the other side blank! mix them up and lay them out with the blank side up! Play Concentration according to traditional rules.
Snap!
Mix your Concentration cards and pass them out to you and another player until they are all gone. Play Snap! according to the traditional rules. When a definition lines up with the word yell “Snap!” Tic-Tac-Toe
Lay 9 cards out in a tic-tac-toe grid. Take turns choosing a card. If you can say the answer then put a pawn on the card. Keep going until someone has tic-tac-toe or it is a draw.
Remember only Robinson Crusoe had everything done by Friday the rest of us have to work at it daily!

GrammarThe classical model emphasizes vocabulary studies as the beginning
of tackling a new subject. The Bible emphasizes the study of words and The
Word. Therefore, it is very important to Classical Conversations to make
language studies accessible to the average American. We have chosen Latin
because it is foundational to the English language. The study of Latin is
difficult so it trains students to work hard. The study of Latin prepares
students for the study of the sciences. It enables them to enter into the Great
Conversations of history. As one who studies Latin, I can’t figure out why
anyone would say it is a ‘dead language.’ I came across Latin while reading
about politics, church history, economics, the Bronte sisters, and family
medicine. It is useful to me for spelling rules and decoding words on my
trips abroad. Therefore, we have a lot of Latin studies in Classical
Conversations.
